Recording your own music video

I want to try and record a music video for my kids. I just got back from the recording studio last night at 2am and pretty happy with the results. Still haven't mastered it but put a decent mix on the new song and redid some vocals on some others.

Anyway I need some tips as far as editing software and....well any other advice would be great. I plan to do some live type footage and some other action stuff. They have a big party to play on the 4th and they have the high school dance coming up so I can get some footage there.

So any of you AV guys/gals can point me in the right direction that would be great. Also any ideas for the video would be cool.

I have Sony Vegas, Adobe Premier Pro, and Ulead Video Studio...

Listed hardest to easiest to learn. You can do most things in the Ulead software, but are limited in some areas.

Sony, and Adobe are top notch progs where you will get a lot of preference based opinions, rather than which is better. They are extremely different in the work flow, and layout. After learning Ulead first, then Premier, Sony took some time to get used to.

End result will all be great, depending on what your expectations/learning curve will be...

I purposely did not recommend specifically one due to they have a varying price associated to each. The Ulead is the cheapest, and the easiest to learn basics.

Split your raw footage into scenes before trying to edit/splice together. Start with a diagram/script of what you want it to be to save going back and rearranging footage many times.

If you are using multiple camera footage (meaning different cameras), make sure the settings are as close as possible to keep the end result from looking patched/cheap.

Go out and get footage of anything to practice, practice, practice with. Experiment with things to get an idea of all the things that can be done/created with different effects.

In the end, great editing will look far better than a bunch of effects that add nothing to the story...

P.S.

Concentrate on composition, and scene editing before you venture into effects, and color correction stuff...

I think it's pretty tight for their ages for sure. Did they write all of it?

The drumming is a bit loose on the snare, but the old school punk feel is cool. The vocals are tight, as is the rest... I think the the growling at 2:16 should be incorporated more throughout the song to give it more of a modern edge, but that's my preference and may not be where they want to go with it.

Pretty heavy subject matter too. Which is yours?

You could say they’re all mine. They’re all adopted except for the bass player but he lives with us lol. The three all have the same mother but obviously the youngest (drummer) has a different father. The mother was a friend of ours. She was killed in a car wreck and the father of the oldest two was shot dead before that. The youngest father is alive but pretty much worthless.

My daughter writes the lyrics and the rest of them write the music. I produce it :D

I thought about dropping one or the other. I thought the scream-o part didn’t really go with the song but left it in there for now anyway. I might drop the other part and do like Coop said and put more scream-o parts in it.
