Possible as No one heard about that Meteor until it happened and apparently there were several similar cases

Odd that we tracked a Meteor that was suppose to Buzz Earth, but none of the ones that fell that day.

However I don't see the US doing something that could start a War... (Not just something like the Cold War either) I mean, We do some pretty stupid things...but that would not end well for anyone.
