I was really excited to buy it as I had been looking into it for over a year and always asking him if it was for sale. (Never was) One day I was showing a friend the car and asked him what he thought because I was going to look online for something similar, as I stood outside looking at the car the owner comes out... "Hey do you still want to buy it?" I said "Yeah what's wrong with it now?" He said "Nothing, I just need some extra cash." He said make an offer and I said well how much cash do you need? He said $2000 is what I need I said Sold! A few days later I show up with the cash and got myself my very first 3000GT! I was really excited and didn't have a single clue what was included with it. Turns out there was a list of mods already done including JIC suspension, stage 2 clutch, Intake/exhaust. I also found out shortly after owning it that it never got the 120k service... My water pump took a dump about 2 weeks after. I tackled this all on my own. It took me about 6 hours to tear down and put it back together. During this process I find that the motor mounts are shot so I ordered a set of poly mounts from 3SX. I ended up for some reason taking apart the intake manifold to find out that my VIC gear was trashed so that was the next project. Didn't take me long to find out that it was $800 from the dealer so I started Junk Yard Diving. A friend of mine ended up having an extra one so I took his. I finally got that part installed and received my motor mounts. Before I was able to install everything I took a drive to Hollywood and ended up catching air on the damn freeway blowing out my differential. After this I started getting discouraged about the reliability of the car so it sat for about 2 months. I had only driven the car a handful of times and it just seemed to keep falling apart. So finally 3 weeks ago I realized it was going to cost me $1100 for a rebuilt transmission. I took the task on myself. I ended up rebuilding it all on my own. (With the help of a few forum members here) After seeing how easy it is I said to myself "self you should help save everyone some money and make a DIYS guide. So I documented the whole process and made a guide you can find in the tech section of the forum. So about $120 later I had my transmission installed and the car back on the streets. Next is going to be cosmetics, some powder coating and full bodywork and paint. I have found out by being a 3kGT owner that I am not just another guy with a car, but part of a greater community that is built of people with no intentions of becoming mechanics only to be forced to turn wrenches and bust knuckles just to save a buck for gas. ::Update 6/26/2012:: After realizing it was time to really put things in action I decided to shoot for a Twin Turbo conversion on my Base model! Well after a month of stressing out and scrambling around for parts I'm Finally DONE!!! I did this whole conversion on my own with minor assistance with information and parts hunting. I had a few hick-ups but managed to work through them such as imporperly mounting my Thermostat housing and finding out when I added fluid, broke my front turbo exhaust housing, Downpipe had to be modded to fit my second gen TT's, Had to make my own oil return lines because second gen Base models had 2 bolt blocks with 4 bolt oil pumps... The list goes on, and on, and on... haha but at the end I worked through it and got it running Here is a Video of me starting it up after my TT install! =) http://youtu.be/cF-hHpl4ra4?hd=1 Here is the First Test Drive as well! http://youtu.be/b3kirLU1hlU?hd=1 And the in car during the day! http://youtu.be/ehFx_n-S8I8?hd=1 |
