Always interesting, just like on all the other forums you subscribe on, just with some more intelligence !

Just to get it started:

I work in the Oil and Gas drilling industry. Im called a Drilling Fluids Engineer, but im not an engineer by any means.
They use a fluid, called mud, while deep and im responsible for that fluid: which means weight and chemical properties of that fluid are to be maintained and adjusted according to the depth we are on and the depth we want to reach.
Its basically all down to cost and planning.

Here's one of the Trinidad rigs ive worked on:

My job title according to the books is a Production Scheduler, but I am so much more. I oversee production for a company that produces drop in bedliners for the international market. We sell to OEM manufacturers all over the world.

I order the raw material, unload raw material, load reground material for backhaul to the vendor, set the production schedule, make sure maintenance is informed of any changes that need made and know what molds are to be prepared for production, coordinate with the sales rep on orders, maintain spreadsheets to keep track of orders, schedule containers with forwarders to make vessels sailing schedules, prepare the shipments for loading, load the shipments on the containers, coordinate with a subcontractor for production of parts packs, etc, etc, etc.

And some of you wonder why I bitch about my job. LOL

I bend wrenches....

Started out my career almost 30 years ago in transmission shops. Eventually got tired of standing in one place stacking up transmissions all day, so I branched out to working for dealers and independent repair shops. Didn't fit well with the dealer life, so I've been in independent shops, (including as an owner) for the last 20 years.

Having the automatic trans experience, and in the last few years the knowledge of the 3S platform, have set me apart from the crowd enough that I have never been unemployed for more than two days that wasn't by choice...

I'm a pump and valve mechanic for SSBN submarines at Bangor, WA. Water systems, some steam, heat exchanger and condenser re-tubing, gear boxes, coupling alignments, determining and conducting repairs and overhauls of ships equipment in the time allowed during depot availability. I mainly work on the pumps, "The old guy" that had done pumps for 20+ years previous retired 4 years ago and lerned me real good in his last year there. Disasembly, cleaning, inspection, repairs, re-assembly, and testing are all my duties. Part goes back to boat, boat goes away, part wears out in x time, repeat, lol. The Russians could never figure that out, or at least couldn't afford it. The last BN is supposed to be phased out in 2041, meaning it will be 44 years old. I am proud to be part of that heritage.

Graduated their 4 year apprenticeship program 3 years ago.

For 7 years I worked as an Information Systems Technologist for a local Municipality. Basically anything that hit a PC is what I supported for a number of users. When I first started, it was 250 users, now it's down to 145 users.

My new job I completed my second week and my job title is Senior Project Lead Engineer. I build complete computer network systems for customers and give the solution to our sales division. Got new job as full time MIG welder Making store shelves, displays and anti theft devices. For large clients such as wally world and office max. I am now moved up to final welding assembly which includes final inspection before i send stuff to powdercoat.. Was laid off previously when I was making Misc parts. But they brought me back and gave me a better position on top too. So far I really enjoy the job and its a chance to learn some new things and improve my welding skills.. I dream of investing in new welding equipment and tools and also brushing up on my TIG. I have the strong urge and passion to build Exhaust systems including Manifolds and Headers. Really I just love welding and I love cars and thats my preferred way to combine them.

Previously I worked in a concrete company as Supervisor, Driver, and Installer. We did Concrete Staining, Epoxys, Sealing, Cove Basing, working with many Acid, Water, and solvant based products. I am also still licensed so this is a good back up option for other forms of employment. I loved the job and took great pride in it, however i had no benefits at all and pay was very inconsistant and i could not trust my boss anymoreveither but i stayed up until I moved out of State.

I'm also a construction superintendent/project engineer for a company that does commercial work. I actually went to a technical high school for carpentry, worked during the school year and summers for contractors, and went on to college for Construction Management - so I guess you could say I have experience as well as education. Honestly the experience is a lot more valuable than the formal education - not that it doesn't help. I like working at my company because although they're fairly large, I'm not limited to any one aspect of the industry. I've done it all ranging from quantity takeoff/estimating & budgeting to scheduling, planning, field supervision etc etc, even occasionally laboring which is a nice change of pace from time to time.

Just got my 35 year certificate the end of August. I've been a skilled trades journeyman for the last 20 years, serving a 4 year apprenticeship in Industrial Machine Repair/Machinist. It is our job to make sure the presses and robots run to make parts for cars. In between press repairs, we follow a MAXIMO 7 Preventive Maintenance schedule. The job pays well in hourly and in overtime (you can't maintain a press while it is running during the week).
What a lot of autoworkers don't include when they tell their neighbors/friends how much they made last year is how many hours they spent in the factory to make it. It is not uncommon for me or my coworkers to regularly work 2900 to 3200 hours in a calendar year with a normal 40 hour week netting 2080 hours in the same time span. In other words, I usually work a year and a half every year.

I used to have too much money sitting around, so I got into the 3S platform; now I don't have that problem anymore.:p

Can't believe I never posted in here. Opps.

I've went to college, didn't like it so i dropped out, worked retail at a sporting goods store, rented cars to folks with Avis, and ran a self storage facility in Chattanooga. Started goin back to school about 2 years ago to be a nuclear power plant operator, but the class kept getting dicked around by TVA (big surprise), so I transferred to a four year school to pursue engineering. Probably nuclear, but may fall back on mechanical. Based on the credits I have now, and the classes I would need to take, actually looks like it may be quicker to get an undergrad in Applied Physics and then get a masters in whatever engineering discipline tickles my fancy. Ideally, would love to get a nuclear degree and go to work at Oak Ridge or Y12. But, at this point, i just want to be done with school and no longer paycheck to paycheck.

Currently, I buy and sell on eBay and Craigslist to make money, and I build computers for people. Nothing glamorous, but it keeps me from going hungry.

I work construction mostly doing Plaster. We do EIFS, Stucco, ornamental both new and restorations, venetian and veneer plaster, shotcrete, insulated concrete forms, hydronic heating, existing concrete leveling, gypsum lightweight concrete fireproofing with sound control if deemed, waterproof cementitious decks, drywall occasionally, and some general contract work here and there. Most of the time we do floor fireproofing on big hotels and apartment complexes pouring 13-16,000 sq ft in 6-8 hrs if we have enough volume of work. Once I finish up my Civil Engineering degree my focus will be there hopefully in structures.

I am a Construction Superintendent. I work in the disaster restoration department. Basically in charge of putting peoples lives back together when Mother Nature destroys it. (Fire, wind, flood, or a toilet clogs, and destroys everyone living below them) Most of it is large condos, and commercial buildings.

Update: Was given a promotion from ordering people around to determining what the disaster is worth to us. Superintendent to Estimator. Not so much a move up as it is a move sideways to make room for the up part. Loving the less stressful days I am!

I've honestly never wanted to work there. In the past I went there once a week for instrument calibrations etc. and IDK because of the security it's a bit of a PITA. Anyway money talks and it's a good bit more. I was real nervous but getting more excited now.

I've been pretty quiet about my situation, I left Automotion back in December, the partnership with my brother just didn't work out, and in November I was diagnosed with Cancer in my left tonsil. The last six months have been pretty rough... Went through a pretty aggressive radiation and chemo regimen to fight it off. From the looks of the last PET scan we won, so I'm happy about that, but the treatment was no picnic...

So I'm just back to work in the last few weeks... Opened a small one man shop here in Medford called Real Performance Automotive Service. Hopefully it will pay the bills and work out a little better than the fiasco that has been the previous 8 years at Automotion...

No joke. That's pretty serious stuff.

While I agree about the banging head on a wall with mechanic stuff McCoy, I'm not planning on staying in a career for this. The 3S crowd is shrinking, as is the money and the parts supply. I intend on going back to school still, but for the time being its definitely something off my bucket list.

Since this bumped time to update from 2012.

I am now an Art Director and leading an awesome team of a graphic designer, market research specialist, product manager, and working directly with PR manager.

Wife's company Modern Vector is still going strong, the nice side work I was doing fell on its face, I still have the stock but I don't see it as an awesome thing anymore, just a lot of work down the drain.

Worked on launched another side business last year that just cost a lot of money and the competition upped their game prior to our launch. So that one sucked for our savings and we pulled the plug before launch.

Working on another side business right now that will be launching later this year.

I'm doing the same thing I was when this thread was started. I'm the validation team lead for Chrysler's service diagnostic tool, wiTECH. There are 6-10 people on my team, depending on the time of year. We hire mostly interns, three at a time for 6 months, they overlap in the summer. The application is moving from software (local on the PC) to cloud based (can be run on phones, tablets, PCs, etc). Cool idea in theory, but in practice it leaves much to be desired.

It's seems I change it up yearly and keep moving up the ladder.

Over the past 2 years I have been an Application System Engineer focusing on an IBM product called Maximo.

My company Susser Holdsings (and all sub companies) were purchased by ETP (Energy Transfer Partners). So I got merged over to that, and now work under the Sunoco/Stripes umbrella for applications within that sub company. I was once a 1 man team for my application for a Fortune 500 company. Now I work with a great team of 5 that basically owns half the US in the Oil/Gas/Retail realm.

But I am also looking for bigger and better opportunities. I am traveling at least 1 week out of every month. So time is little to be had these days in the garage. Hopefully it slows down soon, but I keep getting hit with projects I have to lead.

I thought I had posted in here previously, guess not....

My official title is Production Operations Engineer but I'm sort of the catch all. I work for an Email Service Provider called Bronto Software. We deal in commerce based email marketing and transactional messaging for mainly IR 500+ companies. We were acquired by Netsuite last year to fill their gap in Email marketing. Luckily we are staying our own separate entity and not being consumed by them. I wear many hats in my position basically cause the position was created to take responsibility off of the other software engineering teams so they have more time to do their jobs... LOL. Mainly I monitor the overall system health to ensure we are sending emails. Most of the time if nothing is broken I have nothing to do. Once something does go wrong I manage the various teams to ensure the issues are resolved ASAP, Disaster relief, team communications, Post Mortem, Etc. Pretty much coordinate it getting fixed and documentation the event, and creating processes so that it doesn't happen again. I also do a lot of investigation work for various teams and support that keep me busy sometimes. I'm one of the few people that has DB Access so things come my way when people have issues that relate to data in the DB's.

Most of the time I sit here staring at various graphs and logs watching system performance. Making sure processing queues are not overwhelmed, our logs are not blowing up, etc. I have 3 monitors in front of me showing me various stats from Grafana/Graphite, Sentry, Nagios, Check_MK, Kibana/ELK, Atlassian, Etc.

I've been with the company going on 5 years now. When I started I was like employee 70 or something in a 10,000 Sq Ft office. 5 years later we are almost at 400 employees worldwide "Just Bronto", 5 offices "New York, LA, London, Sydney, Headquarters based out of Durham, NC where I am. Our Durham office is now broken out over two buildings due to needing more space. We are at like 100,000 Sq Ft over both building. We have probably the best culture of any company, 7 year winner "Best place to work" in the Triangle, Work from home options, Free drinks and snacks, Unlimited PTO "Which came from the NS acquisition", 2 kegs on tap in the main kitchen which gets unlocked at 5pm, and after 5 years you get a 5 week paid sabbatical.... So yeah I love my job!! :p

Unless you have an employment contract you are not likely to benefit in these transactions. I've been in four startups now and I left two of them before they failed but one went public and made me a lot of money in the dot Com bubble but I lost a lot in foolish option investing. What ABM said. I'd rather not divulge exactly which PLC company (PM me if you're interested), but we're using IEC61131-3 a lot... Which eliminates a lot of the more commonly used PLC manufacturers ;)

and yes, we make railcars go where they're supposed to go, free rolling or being pushed around by locomotives.

I think the nature of the vehicle both appeals to those sorts of people, but also requires owners to develop those skills or have crap tons of money to pay for repairs. Both of these things tend to put people into tech and IT related jobs. So kind of a self fulfilling prophecy at that point.
