View Full Version : Apple's new and intuitive iPhone 5...

... is old and copied.
OK, so let's go over every feature and see if Apple literally did ANYTHING new:
4-inch screen - lol no
5 rows of icons - lol no
Thinnest phone ever - not even factually correct
A6 processor - HTC One X and SIII say hi
LTE - lol no
Panorama mode/8 megapixel camera - lol no
1080p video recording - lol no
Smaller dock connector - lolol no
GPS turn-by-turn (walking, public transit) - Google Maps lol
iCloud tabs - Chrome desktop sync lol
Fullscreen Safari - All sorts of browsers lol no
Sharing photos - lol no
Siri movie and sports - Google Now lol no
SMS when you can't take a call - lolololol super no
LITERALLY NOTHING NEW, I mean literally not a single fucking new feature that Android doesn't already do and likely better in many cases. This quite frankly blew so far below my already minimal expectations I'm just dumb-founded. Not even ONE NEW FEATURE? Incredible.
No NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, micro-USB, widgets, SD storage, notification LED, etc. I shouldn't be so happy to see Apple putting out such a fail product but I am. It really is incredible how far Google, Samsung, and HTC have blown past Apple the last couple years.
Just to copy someone else's comment.
While Apple has always had something new in the past, now their big announcement is nothing but outdated crap. Not a single thing iSheep can claim is better or newer than Android (without being ignorant and wrong).
So what did apple say about Samsung copying Apple? I think the more appropriate quote should be Steve Jobs when talking about being shameless about stealing.

the lawsuits are because apple saw the writing on the wall: they can't out innovate their competition.

The phones perform well, but I just don't get how people can't see past the android phones that are pretty much superior in every facet.
Had a friend who recently dropped her droid bionic for an iphone. 1st thing she asks? How do I download music? She didn't like the iTunes answer, nor did she like the workarounds that require a computer...that she doesn't have. Baaa baaa baaa.

While I was slightly disappointed that Apple didn't have any real aces up their sleeves (most of this info was leaked weeks ago), this is still a pretty solid update.
When Apple does get around to doing something, they generally do it right (e.g. copy & paste, notifications, multi-tasking etc). I think the taller screen, versus a wider screen, was a wise choice in buying more screen real estate without it looking like you're smuggling a tablet in your pocket.
Apple can't innovate all the time, but as someone who enjoys their products, there's always going to be a part of me that hopes they one-up the competition.

I will say making the screen bigger, albeit still behind the curve slightly, was a much needed improvement. Kind of a slap in the face to the consumers when the display size hasn't changed since the original. Hold an S3, they aren't that big. Admittedly, I was one that thought the S3 was huge based on its specs. But, I've played around with a few, and they are very manageable. Still prefer my droid4 for the physical keyboard, and I'm a moto fanboi. :D

I actually own a GNex and a 4S (work phone). Apps I have on my android are cheaper or free compared to iTunes. One app I have has a free version or pro version $0/$5. The equivalent on apple is $5/$10.
I can see how those heavily invested in iTunes don't want to leave, but I think in the long run you will save on android. Everything is more expensive on iPhone.
The iPhone 5 only has one positive I can see, "8 hrs screen on time" or so they claim.

It's an interesting contradiction. For the longest time, we have been fighting to make our mobile phones smaller, more mobile, etc. On the flipside of that coin, we've been wanting larger screens to watch our media on. I supposed you can't easily have it both ways, but what I will say is that the size of some Android devices are becoming borderline ridiculous. It's not difficult, nor innovative, to make your screen larger (in fact, it's probably easier) -- but rather, in Apple's case, it was probably about trying to find a happy middle-ground.
I never understood why the iPhone screen wasn't 16:9 to begin with, though.

Also Nick, what are you talking about, man?
Many of the most commonly used apps that are cross-platform are comparably priced. One example that comes to mind is the very app you used to post your hate: Tapatalk.
$2.99 - Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.quoord.tapatalkpro.activity&hl=en)
$2.99 - iOS (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tapatalk-forum-app/id307880732?mt=8)
Other popular apps: Dropbox, Pandora, Shazam, Netflix, Fandango, Facebook, Twitter, Mint, Evernote, Skype, Yelp, Photoshop Express, etc -- all free, on both platforms.
As far as paid apps, just to pull a few from my phone (Android vs iOS):
Max Payne ($2.99 (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rockstar.maxpayne&hl=en) vs $2.99 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/max-payne-mobile/id512142109?mt=8))
GTA3 ($4.99 (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rockstar.gta3&hl=en) vs $4.99 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/grand-theft-auto-3/id479662730?mt=8))
Tetris by EA ($2.99 (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eamobile.tetris&hl=en) vs $0.99 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tetris/id479943969?mt=8)) - iOS is cheaper!
Fruit Ninja ($1.22 (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.halfbrick.fruitninja&hl=en) vs $0.99 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fruit-ninja/id362949845?mt=8)) - iOS is cheaper, again
Avengers Initiatives ($6.99 (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.disney.avengers_goo&hl=en) vs $6.99 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/avengers-initiative/id507283331?mt=8))
Need for Speed: Shift ($4.99 (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eamobile.nfsshift_na_wf&hl=en) vs $4.99 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/need-for-speed-shift-for-ipad/id363301193?mt=8))
^- I had to do a search for top 'paid apps', as about 90% of the apps on my phone were all free.
But as the results show, the app pricing between the two platforms aren't that bad (in favor of one over the other). Even if they were, developers gotta get paid.

As far as Apps go, the Play Store is soon to surpass the App Store in applications. On the subject of paid apps, you have to look at it from a much broader view than pulling a few apps off of each's Top Paid apps. Generally, when an app costs money on both stores, it is cheaper on Google Play. With that said, there is a FAR greater percentage of free apps (the same that are on the iOS App Store) on Google Play than the App Store. Plus, with Android OS, you still have the highly customizable platform. You can move from apps, to widgets, to adjusting size of widgets, etc. You can set the phone up how you see fit. If you like page after page after page of block app icons, then the iPhone may not looks so bad. However, if you wanted to, you could do the same with Android. I don't know anybody with an Android that hasn't taken advantage of widgets though.
In the end, with the iPhone 5, you get a stretched out version of every previous iPhone. Nothing new, exciting, or flattering about its new ergo design. More of the same with a little extra. Personally, I'll take the more customizable GSIII with expandable storage, a removable battery, 4.8" screen, and DOUBLE the RAM of the iPhone 5. Plus, you can take solace in the fact that you didn't purchase an iPhone that was made under *horrendous conditions in their Chinese manufacturing plants.
*17 suicides in the Shenzhen plant plant in 2010 alone. Later, suicide nets were set up outside the windows of the factory.

Dimensions:
S3: 5.38" H x 2.78" W x 0.34" D
iPhone 5: 4.87" H x 2.31" W x 0.30" D
The new iPhone 5 itself is a full half inch shorter, a half inch shaved off the width, and slightly thinner.
As I said, any manufacturer can make their cell phones larger and more cumbersome. But is that really the direction everyone wants to go?

Flash is trash, plain and simple. This was the case before Apple turned its back on it, and it's still the case now. I will never design a site in Flash.
Adobe has finally realized this. They lost the battle; couldn't optimize it enough where it doesn't kill your battery, and couldn't patch up all the security holes it opened.
When the developer gives up on their own creation, you can pretty much consider the future of their platform doomed UNLESS it has a very strong community of supporters and believers. Both of which Adobe Flash has none.

I think my GNex fits in my hands great. Perhaps this is whats best about Android, we have a choice. If you want bigger, get the Note or Note II. If not there is the SIII or GNex, and i'm sure there are smaller ones, and that is just Samsung.
You have the Razr, and the upcoming Razr HD and Razr Maxx HD. You have the Razr M as well.
What if I were to say that phone just wasnt large enough for me, what choice does that leave me with? But I guess since Apple made it, it is just the perfect size, the market was lost without Apple spending years of research on what the perfect sized phone is. Shit, now Samsung will get sued for copying their perfectly sized phone. Why couldn't Samsung figure that one out.

True, true. Choice is a good thing, whether it's within the same platform or across many.
That's why I wish no ill-will on Android users or their devices. I was just commenting on how, at a certain point, the screen size war steps into becoming counter-productive, as many of us might prefer (more mobile) mobile phones.
On that note, the iPhone feels small to me too, but only after I held a few 5in+ Android-os devices. ;) It's not necessarily a bad thing, as the screen has never felt particularly cramped to me.

A6 processor - HTC One X and SIII say hi
After some more info came out today, this discovery came to light:
Apple A6 processor based on next-gen ARM Cortex A15 tech - Know Your Mobile (http://www.knowyourmobile.com/blog/1586428/apple_a6_processor_based_on_nextgen_arm_cortex_a15 _tech.html)
Despite the fact that Apple remained curiously quiet about the specifics of the iPhone 5’s new hardware spec during its launch event, word is emerging that the new A6 chip may be based on ARM Cortex-A15 architecture.
As it stands right now, both the SIII (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_III) and HTC One X (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_One_X) uses Cortex A9 cores. Which, sorry to tell you, puts them behind the game. At maximum 3 months old, and already out-dated.
Leads me to this:
Apple's new A6 iPhone 5 appears to be first ARM Cortex A15 phone (http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/09/12/apples_new_a6_iphone_5_appears_to_be_first_arm_cor tex_a15_phone)

I kinda lost interest in phones, there is a new android phone coming out every other month. Can Apple keep up, probably not. Did they wait till android dropped their big dogs on the market, and did apple top them? Ive always been an android fanboy. Ive went from Evo- s2 - s3, getting bigger in size and dropping weight is a win win for me. It fits perfectly in my hand (Probably small in big mikes hands), fast, powerful, and serves its purpose. I wish the U.S. version of the S3 came with the quad-core exynos chip, I am not a huge fan of the Snapdragon... The quad-core will be coming out soon once they get it working with LTE... so the Iphone5 will be obsolute in a couple of month, then next year the iphone5S will come out woot!:shake2:

Quite honestly, with a 7" tablet, and tethering ability on my gnex I find I don't really use my phone much more for anything but calling. Yes, from time to time I still do, but not enough to make me upgrade. Also since its unlocked and able to get the latest and greatest from Google (not directly), I feel I will stay satisfied long after my contract is up. Which is great since Verizon is forcing people out of unlimited with subsidized phones.
I think as tablets gain popularity, people will not need as much from their phones.

Yea I loved my GS2 but had to do a forced upgrade since my sister broke her phone and inherited my GS2. I also have a ASUS Transformer which I use a lot at work so. And rooting and changing to different roms is always nice, you will never really get bored of your device.
Also there is a way to tether your tablet to the phone, so you can make phone calls using the tablet. I havent tried it out with my transformer, but its a neat feature if you are far from your phone and need to make a quick call.

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement at that time. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”
If this weren't the case, Apple would be suing EVERYONE, not just the ones that are so obviously and shamelessly Apple-like.
And if you still believe Apple is all about starting lawsuits:
Tim Cook Wants Rivals to 'Invent Their Own Stuff' | PCWorld (http://www.pcworld.com/article/254541/tim_cook_wants_rivals_to_invent_their_own_stuff.ht ml)
"I've always hated litigation, and I continue to hate it. We just want people to invent their own stuff," Cook told analysts this week during an earnings call announcing Apple's financial results for the quarter ending in March.
"I would highly prefer to settle versus battle," he added.
Which has proven to be the case. Apple tried to settle with Samsung multiple times, even offering to license their patents, before Samsung eventually forced Apple to drag them to court. Even after the court battle started, they still were given opportunities to play fair. They did not. If anything, Samsung was anti-competitive, trying to force Apple to pay exuberant prices for standard-essential patents like those necessary for 3G connectivity, etc. Now Samsung is in hot water with their own government over these issues:

In negotiations, both sides ALWAYS start higher than they'll settle for. Anyone in the business world knows this.
Regardless, the patents Apple was defending aren't required to stay competitive, let alone to function as a modern day smartphone. Samsung's patents on their other hand, from which they were asking EVEN MORE than what Apple wanted for theirs, are essential. There's no pussyfooting around it.

I was going to say the same to you. What part do you think I missed? Have you been too busy being spoon-fed by Samsung's PR team to come to your own conclusions and do your own research? (e.g. thinking Samsung vs Apple was truly all about "rectangles with rounded corners")

This is a whole different argument, and once again, no one here has ever claimed that Apple "invented" this stuff. You keep reverting back to the same tired attacks on whom you call "iTards", and your arguments are sounding as naive and baseless as theirs.
Here's the cold hard truth for you. Apple has been innovative, not inventive, in their technological advancements. There is a difference, but no less important. Apple has taken failed products and made them a "success" - with success being defined by their adoption rate by both technically-savvy and techno-illiterate people alike. Apple has turned out a quality product year-in and year-out that have turned people like me, who have used computers all my life, into a fan and devoted user. I have spent time on both sides of the fence, using Windows at work, and OS X at home. I have found what works for me, and it is good. I'm not saying you should adopt it like I have, but I am saying you should get your facts straight so that you can pose a better and more factual argument.
i have no problem with apple innovating. i have a problem with them deciding that it's ok to eliminate competition by suing them out of existence. if apple could compete--on its own--it wouldn't need to sue. heck, if apple had a compelling & innovative enough product, it wouldn't have to sue. what apple is doing is based on the realization that by being a leader in innovation and not invention it risks losing all market-share & relevance to other companies who can out-innovate. we're not talking about a revolutionary type of internal combustion engine here--we're talking about a freaking smartphone.
you can't convince me that apple started the market. palm wasn't even the first PDA player--it was probably someone hacking their ti-82 calculator. innnovation in the years since has been one company building on the ideas of another. sure, there are some things which are patentable...but for a company based around innovation, there's virtually nothing that can be patented legitimately. don't ascribe a broken patent system as sanction for such actions.
now it's your turn. list one patent that apple has doesn't have legitimate prior art. i'll wait.
p.s.
i haven't read any samsung PR. i honestly don't know how samsung is fighting this battle. what i do know is the dubious content of apple's patents & the extremely broken patent system.

Samsung or anyone else that has stepped on Apple's toes won't be going out of existence any time soon. You're so melodramatic.
Apple can clearly compete with or without the lawsuits. They have the world's #1 top selling smartphone, before the lawsuits and after. However, this wouldn't last very long if they let others just chip away at the combined elements that make their phone a fan-favorite. What you're arguing for is that all phones should intermingle, look alike, and cease to be creative. I'm saying the opposite.
Force Samsung and other phone manufacturers to spend more time on R&D. Make them pay for designers, as opposed to letting them just follow suit and copy what Apple's done because what they appear to be doing is working.
With hard work comes reward, and Samsung, trying to rush a product to market to compete with the iPhone, did not put in the hard work. And it shows.
now it's your turn. list one patent that apple has doesn't have legitimate prior art. i'll wait.
Easy. The iPhone (hear me out).
Samsung found prior art in regards to the iPad, but the iPhone design patents could not be negated because it was not easily mistakable with any known device before it. Sure, there were rectangular devices with touch screens before it (just like there are many after it), but at least Apple had the decency to make their design look different enough to never be confused with them. If only all other manufacturers could show the same courtesy.
As far as patents that (likely) haven't been done before and therefore don't have prior art, here's a bonus round for you:

Exactly. The only reason they have that connector is to make royalties off the licensing of that connector. Personally, I think the iPhone 5 should ship with the adapter pre-packaged, not an add on option.

I wish you were an Apple user, just for a day, so you can learn what in the world you're talking about.
You don't have to buy your cables and adapters from Apple. Apple may have their own brand with their own set price, but virtually EVERY single cable and adapter Apple has "invented" (or adopted) has an alternate brand that sells them as well (often for much cheaper).
Give it about a week, and Monoprice.com will have the adapters and cable for a combined total of $5.00 (like the previous adapters (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=112&cp_id=11212&cs_id=1083101&p_id=9423&seq=1&format=2)). Hopefully that's cheap enough for you.
PS - the same goes for RAM, harddrives, PCI cards, monitors, keyboards, mice, etc. All can be found for much cheaper elsewhere (http://www.macsales.com/), and are completely interchangeable regardless of what Apple offers in their stores.

For the iPhone5, Apple has indicated they intend to keep the adapter cables proprietary for a while. Also, it appears they're not even available until October? "Video and iPod out not supported", that's direct from Apple. This seems to happen with all of their next gen releases. It couldn't have taken much to make the Lightning be able to convert a digi signal to analog, I wouldn't think.

I can't defend Apple for taking so long on the adapters. This is a crap move, I'll admit it. I, too, have an old dock that I was hoping to use again at some point.
On the flip side, I do see the need for a smaller plug - the old one was huge and outdated. Also worth noting: USB2, which most smartphones use, never supported direct audio/video out either.

Prystar got shut down because it was unauthorized hardware running Apple-made software. Apple heavily subsidizes the price of their software ($19 for a full OS, I mean really) in order to make up for it in hardware. So no, the cable is nothing like that. Apple doesn't own a patent that prevents others from making cables. Monoprice, RadioShack, etc can make all the cables they want. It's rubber and copper. In case you didn't know, Apple tried that once, and it failed -- hard. This was actually around the time I first started using Apple computers and software. The licensing program was from 1995 through 1997, and some of the manufacturers they licensed to were Power Computing (which I owned 1 of), Motorola, Radius, APS Technologies, and UMAX, among others. The problem? Many of these clones were trash, increasingly difficult to work with and not worth the effort for Apple to try to support alongside their own. The program was killing Apple both financially and in brand value, as we all know the company wasn't doing so well in the mid-90's.
So? They killed the license program. Who are we to tell them to run their business differently? They found a solution that works, is profitable (which is every business's goal), and makes customers happy.
Customers have choices when they buy a computer. Apple has the choice on whether or not to license their OS to crappier hardware manufacturers, or to just focus on making their OS work as flawlessly as possible with their own computers. Microsoft made the choice to license their OS to manufacturers that make 90% trash and (at best) 10% laptops/desktops that are actually worth using.
You say that Apple doesn't want competition: Microsoft IS still the competition. Android is the competition. And as long as they continue to turn out crappy products more often than not, I'm sure Apple will LOVE them as competitors. I will admit, and it appears Apple agrees, that the vulnerable glass was a bad idea. That's likely why they changed the glass back cover to anodized 6000-series aluminum, and adopted the supposedly "much stronger" Gorilla Glass 2 for the front. back in 1997 (back just before jobs got re-hired--which i applauded, btw) apple was using proprietary chips. of course you're going to have issues with 3rd parties running your OS if it's designed for a quirky BIOS & chip. with the migration to intel, apple has no such issues any longer (though it has ironically opened the door to more potential types of hacks). with the intel-based systems, licensing to third-parties shouldn't be a problem.
furthermore, it rests on the third-parties to support their own products, not appple (nor microsoft). if a HARDWARE issue is causing the problem, then it's clearly the fault of the third-party hardware provider--otherwise, apple's own in-house products would be suffering the same issues. microsoft isn't responsible for the video-card crapping out in my sager any more than it was responsible for my hp tossing a hard-drive. don't put a spin on it. apple could easily license--they're being elitist pricks.

it's not microsoft's fault that it's licensees make "trash" with their products--and thank you for proving my point. if apple wants its consumers to have a quality product...then by all means, continue to make one. the difference is, apple can't charge a stupidly-high premium on its products if any legitimate 3rd parties were to offer identical quality at a lower price.
p.p.s.
if the competition sucks so hard, wtf does apple keep suing like it owns 20 paper mills? the flaw in the iTard logic is thus: apple is innovative and must sue its competition to insure its patents are honored--&--at the same time, apple's competition suxxors the big11!!!11, and can't hold a match to apple. both cannot be true. in fact, neither is technically true--yet in the minds of the iTard nation, there is no dichotomy here.

Apple makes mediocre PCs that run a closed OS. If that's what you want, go for it, but keep in mind Apple isn't perfect and they've released plenty of buggy software or crap hardware of their own. If you want an "open" system that's supported by pretty much every manufacturer on the market, get a regular Windows PC and deal with any issues that may arise. If you want a truly open OS, go for Linux (or equivalent) and deal with doing nearly everything yourself or supported by a forum.
Pick your poison.

back in 1997 (back just before jobs got re-hired--which i applauded, btw) apple was using proprietary chips. of course you're going to have issues with 3rd parties running your OS if it's designed for a quirky BIOS & chip. with the migration to intel, apple has no such issues any longer (though it has ironically opened the door to more potential types of hacks). with the intel-based systems, licensing to third-parties shouldn't be a problem.
I don't think you fully understood what I said.
furthermore, it rests on the third-parties to support their own products, not appple (nor microsoft). if a HARDWARE issue is causing the problem, then it's clearly the fault of the third-party hardware provider--otherwise, apple's own in-house products would be suffering the same issues. microsoft isn't responsible for the video-card crapping out in my sager any more than it was responsible for my hp tossing a hard-drive. don't put a spin on it. apple could easily license--they're being elitist pricks.
Here's the assumption you just made: "If it's the hardware issues causing problems, then people will blame the third-party hardware provider."
No. Wrong. So far from the truth.
In reality, when their computer is on the fritz, most people (and we're not talking the self-proclaimed computer "professionals" in this thread), most people won't know who to blame. It brings the entire user experience down. Kernel panics? Corrupted RAM? Failed harddrives? To the average user, this is just as likely to look like an OS problem as it would anything else. The result? Less satisfied customers, more fragmentation, and ultimately more work for Apple. It's no wonder they don't go that path, I see this enough as-is with Windows machines at ANY place I've ever worked. Whenever a Windows laptop gets dropped off at my desk for repair for what turns out to be a hardware failure, 9 times out of 10 the naive user thinks they just got a virus or corrupted the system. Most people are clueless, and that's why letting crap manufacturers package your OS with your systems is a bad idea.
That is something Apple got right, and is perhaps why their Mac vs PC advertisement campaign was as successful as it was in getting users to switch. People were increasingly frustrated with their PC's, and Microsoft doesn't give 2 sh*ts about who they licensed their OS to, because to Microsoft, money is money. This is the same reason Google just gives away their OS -- they don't care who runs it because just by sheer marketshare, the more Android phones they have out there, the more money they'll make by dragging them into their ecosystems and revenue-generating machine.

Yes, it is. To be honest, if I were in Ballmer's shoes, I would crack down on licensees in order to boost user experience. I would weed out the bad third-party manufacturers, set some sort of standard so that this problem wouldn't be as bad as it is today. People don't have time, or the interest, to sit down and research why the $299 PC laptop isn't as good as the $699, when to them, a laptop looks like a laptop, and should just work.
Us experienced users take this for granted. We know which brands to avoid, and we know that not all laptops are the same.
if the competition sucks so hard, wtf does apple keep suing like it owns 20 paper mills?
I may be wrong, but I think now that the high-profile Samsung vs Apple lawsuit is over, we'll be seeing a significant drop in lawsuits. Why? Because Apple made its point: "don't copy us, create your own stuff." Other manufacturers know this now if they didn't before, and will come up with their own, unique style of design. The initial boom of smartphones being rushed to the market to compete is over, and now I'm sure Samsung, Nokia, etc all have development in the wings for what will be the next generation of smartphones. And we should all be wishing them the best.
apple back down from lawsuits? never. they spend more money on lawyers than the GDP of a small third-world country. you're badly mistaken if you think this was the zenith. apple has to sue, or it can't remain relevant.
microsoft HAS cut down on crap offerings--wtf do you think the surface was created? acer sure as shit isn't happy about that.
people blame the software first? lol! please. consumers are much more divided along brand lines than along OS lines. for every 1 person who might say "i'm never using OS "xyz" again", there's 100 who are saying "i'm never buying brand "x" again. you make it sound like that's a BAD thing that there's competition in windows hardware. the reality is, when you have only one hardware manufacturer, there's no natural counterbalance for design flaws. MS drew a shitton of complaints because of RROD on the 360; had there been alternative hardware, the market would have naturally balanced itself away from MS hardware. same thing holds true for apple. apple responds to its design flaws (the myriads of them) by saying things like "you're holding it wrong". that shit would never fly if it had any real competition in the hardware segment.
so contrary to how you spell it out, licensing not only offers consumers more choice--it protects them against "epic-fail" on behalf of one company.

I'm just reporting what I see from the inside. You'd be surprised who people try to blame, and how often they're completely wrong.
Perhaps Apple should license their OS to other manufacturers that are able to meet or exceed a certain standard (to avoid the problems I mentioned earlier). But this means their main source of income, hardware, would have to be rethought and restructured. They would be a far cry from the Apple we know today.
But you hit on a good point. What we do know is that Microsoft is making waves with the Surface. Waves within their own company by shifting into becoming more of a hardware company (like Apple), and waves outside their company with other manufacturers like Acer whining because their territory (hardware) is being invaded.
If what we're seeing is any indication, I think we'll see Microsoft become even more hardware-focused, and will eventually phase out licensing when its no longer their largest or most worthy source of income.
Guess we'll see.
ms won't phase out licensing. there is no way it can possibly retain OS market share by being the only manufacturer for windows pc's. and if it tried going down that road, linux would likely become the choice OS for software/gaming development.

I spent a week demo'ing 3 different phones (HTC Trophy, iPhone 4, Samsung Fascinate) before I chose my Windows Phone. Granted I have the convenience of working at a Verizon store but I see people coming in and asking for a phone and have absolutely NO reason why they want said phone. BTW I did not choose my phone based on hardware specs, it was purely the OS. The iPhone 4 had far superior hardware at the time. TBH I'd love to have the Galaxy SIII running WP8 but I'll just wait for the Lumia 920.

I'd believe it man. What's interesting, and somewhat on the flipside, is sitting in on a number of conversations between the reps and my friends/family at various mobile retailers. While many of the employs clearly had their own biases (the Verizon Stores I've attended tend to really push Android phones, AT&T seemed to be more supportive of the iPhone), they came up with the silliest reasons why a "clueless" person should buy one OS over another.
For example, one Verizon rep was trying to convince an elderly lady that she should buy an Android phone because of many of the same reasons listed in this thread ("Apple is evil", "Apple fanboys are annoying", "Android is more configurable", "Android is more open and you can make your own apps!"). Do you think this old lady gave 2-toots about any of this stuff? She just wants a phone that doesn't give her a headache. I really hope, as someone that works at Verizon, that you consider how a person plans to use their phone, and how each OS has their benefits and drawbacks depending on the type of person that will be using it. It's not always so black and white.
I am surprised this thread went the way it did.

I can give a real life example. A friend of mine who is a die hard iPhone user, always used them, has one now, won't be buying the new one. He threw hundreds of dollars at docks and anything else that fits the iPhone charger...they made a completely new one for no reason. His reason for switching to Android come time for a new phone is that Apple isn't looking in support of their current users, but rather trying to money grab by using an old old fashion tactic of "we'll replace everything so they have to buy all new accessories." He's fed up with their lack of caring for their current supporters, so he's switching to a platform that doesn't make you drop another few hundred dollars just to accommodate another phone. An entire platform of different manufacturers makes the same usb port, but Apple has to remain unique to its own, and changes from its previous model. That's a nice "F*** off" to its customers. Best part is, he never entertained the idea of anything else until he had first hand experience with just how blatant Apple is with its self-made scumbag model for sales. He'll be joining the majority soon.

I'm sorry man, but Apple has kept the same dock connector for nearly a decade. At some point you have to let it go in favor of something that's smaller and just makes more sense for modern technology. In this case, that means dropping analog pins in favor of going all digital. That sounds about right compared to where we were 9 years ago.
Apple does include a USB3/Lightning cable and a wall-plug charger with each iPhone and iPod, for free. As far as docks go, if you think Apple is just trying to make everyone "pay them for new accessories," that doesn't seem to quite line up with this news:
No Dock for the iPhone 5, Says SVP Phil Schiller (http://gizmodo.com/5944431/no-dock-for-the-iphone-5-says-svp-phil-schiller)
That's not to say I don't think Apple is trying to make money. They are. They're a business, after all. But at the rate technology is growing, if you'll abandon a company because they change a connector, you might as well quit the game. I didn't shed any tears when my SCSI peripherals became obsolete.

Because Micro USB only has 5 pins (as opposed to the 9 pins that Apple decided on)?
In short, each of the pins offer a different function. Some include your basics (power/ground), others for data, but the rest are for interacting with certain features that third-party accessories might, and likely will, incorporate. The original iWhatever cable had 30-pins, a mixture of analog and digital, and was at this point just redundant. It was time to simplify.
Not to mention making the plug reversible. Granted this is a small bonus, but one that is still welcome. I know I hate fiddling in the dark while trying to plug in a standard USB cable on the nightstand. Attention to detail. Why aren't all USB-styled cables designed to be reversible to begin with?
I'm not going to deny that Apple probably has other goals in mind (e.g. getting third-party dock manufacturers to renew their "Made for iPhone/iPod" branding licenses), but in short, designing the Lightning cable was a necessity in order to incorporate the features/versatilities they wanted to see accessories (made by anyone, and of all types) be able to do.

As opposed to spewing off at the mouth, go look up the pinout diagrams yourself. Micro USB, with its 5 pins, dedicate each pin to the following: 1 for power, 1 for ground, 2 for data and 1 for signal ground:
MicroUSB B - Kineteka Systems (http://www.kineteka.com/microusb-b.aspx)
And yes, one pin can be used for multiple things (for example, while you CAN use the ground pin to transfer data (copper is copper), that is NOT the suggested standard.)
Another fact, if you cared to do your research, is that Micro-USB just simply isn't powerful enough. Micro-USB has a max voltage of 5 V (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus), so Apple took the opportunity to beef it up a bit to increase the voltage for more power consuming devices like the iPad.
Edit: I'm not sure why you guys can't just look this up yourself. But I'm happy to supply info where I can: Lightning vs. Micro-USB - Business Insider (http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-lightning-vs-micro-usb-2012-9)

Amazing, with only 2 lines (cable internet, core/ground) I can get TV, highspeed internet, and telephone. PLENTY of bandwidth. Those 2 data connections can do whatever that iphone or any device needs, especially since its only usb 2.0, not 3.0 (which has more pins). Know what else is amazing, at 5v, you can raise the amperage to 2.1a power those more powerful devices, like iPads, my Nexus 7. No need to raise the voltage.
Come on now, lets be honest. This is 100% about Apple having their own proprietary connector and nothing about its capability. Now if for whatever reason they wanted to stay analog, that would be a different story, but since its digital, no reason they can't use microUSB.

Industry standards for power/data connection. Absolutely no reason to not use that.
As for a single strand.
Verizon Achieves 1.5Tbps Across a Single Fiber Optic Cable Strand | Stop the Cap! (http://stopthecap.com/2011/04/04/verizon-achieves-1-5tbps-across-a-single-fiber-optic-cable-strand/)
And the argument that it can't supply power, my microUSB uses 2.1a on my Nexus 7.
Also that lightning connector is a USB cable on the other side, so to say microUSB is not useful is stupid because it bottles down to a standard USB line.
So there would be no use of those extra pins when connected by cable to a computer.
Also ever think that maybe the 8 pins are just really 4pins x 2 (for the reversibility) therefor making your point invalid.

Nick, to save yourself further debate, please head down to your local Costco or Best Buy to look at an iOS-compatible dock (iHome, etc). Look at the mounting plate. Count the pins. Just about every one of those pins serve a different function (remote/playback signal, data transfer, different power voltages, etc) The list goes on:
http://pinouts.ru/PortableDevices/ipod_pinout.shtml
9 years ago, this was pretty advanced. It supported a lot of different options that plain old USB alone did not.
Now they removed the shit few people even need anymore, yet Micro USB was still too basic.
You know what a Lightning to Micro USB cable would do? It would eliminate/ignore 4 of the leads. There's nothing attached.
Do you know how many pins a standard USB 3 cable has (http://pinoutsguide.com/Slots/usb_3_0_connector_pinout.shtml)? Hopefully you guessed it: 9! So in order to have the same footprint as a Micro USB cable, yet still retain 9 pins, what did Apple have to do? Create the Lightning cable.
Same number of pins as a full-size 9-pin USB 3 plug, same footprint as a 5-pin Micro USB plug. It's as simple as that.

At some point you have to let it go in favor of something that's smaller and just makes more sense for modern technology. In this case, that means dropping analog pins in favor of going all digital. That sounds about right compared to where we were 9 years ago.
Doesn't matter. It makes no difference what Apple has done. It's what is customer impacting. Anywhere you go, you can find a micro USB charger. Now that they have finally changed it, it still differs from what everyone else uses on top of rendering everything he has useless without making even more purchases. Why not just buy something that is universal between every other manufacturer? Go with a system that doesn't require an exclusive connector to that one product that will have a guarantee of being changed again.

shaun, the one fatal flaw in your argument is that there would have to be some massive capability that the iphone has that is completely lacking in ALL competitor's phones (that are equipped with micro usb)...in order to justify your assertion. such a capability does not exist. you still believe that "the extra pins = extra function". that's simply not the case. apple WANTS you to believe that's the case, but look at its competition. where are the features "missing"?
the fact is, apple is simply screwing the pooch on this (and by pooch, i mean its customers). there is no justifiable reason to need a different connector. the fact that you believe it so fervently really speaks to how thoroughly you've been brainwashed by apple PR. if such a bullshit connector were truly needed, then the s3 wouldn't be able to do half of what the iphone5 does--rather than virtually eclipsing it in every area.
again, put down the crack pipe.

Sure, but it's usually the mega rich, who don't work on their own cars and always take it to the dealer for servicing. Porsche uses Torx/inverted Torx fasteners on all their cars now. While that's not exactly proprietary, most shops and people don't have a full set of that crap capable to do much work to the car. Ferrari requires more special tools to work on their cars than any other brand I know... but again, it's that exclusivity factor.
As far as Apple products go... Well, I don't know how they originally convinced people to buy into it. But it's too late now, since most manufacturers that make accessories for Apple all use the same connector now too, and that forces even Apple's competitors to use the same type of connection when possible for compatibility.
Eventually, Apple will change the design... and everyone will switch to the new one, and we'll start all over again.

Perfect, thanks for the link.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what I understand about Android docking stations (I don't own one). To get audio to play through one, you have two options: Bluetooth or Mini-jack.
Here's what we know about Bluetooth (and I'm sure an audiophile can chime in on this): With Bluetooth where it is today, you will never get the same quality from Bluetooth audio streams as you would by plugging it in direct. It's passable for some, but really, if you expect more out of Bluetooth alone, you won't achieve it.
As far as the mini-jack option goes, well, that just means you have to plug in a second cable in addition to the Micro USB to your Android phone. It works, but it's unsightly, and not preferable compared to plugging it into the mount and leaving it be. I'm sure you'd agree with me.
This is how Micro USB is limiting, and that's all I was trying to get across (while yes, sure, also defending Apple's choice to design their own cable that's at least compatible with adapters, etc).
In this way, Apple is only diverging from what's "standard yet limiting" towards something a bit "different yet more useful", drawback being that it's not as common at the moment. I'm sure third-party dock manufacturers don't mind this change either, including Samsung, who need people that have 8+ year old docks to come back as return customers for their new and improved goods. For those that still have old docks that work, they're not forced to upgrade (they still work with older devices), or they have the option to use an adapter (Apple brand or, soon, not).
In the end, we're really nitpicking over a design choice that will, at most, cost a user $30 (but in reality, only $2 or $3 once the third party manufacturers de-engineer what Apple did to create their own adapters and cables).
I'll let this argument drop if you can find me a dock that, just through Micro USB, allow all Android devices connected to it to simultaneously do the following:
Charge (rapidly)
Transfer a stereo audio signal (digitally w/o lower audio quality Bluetooth)
Allow for remote control (via IR) to change tracks/volume
Display, on an external LCD screen or whatever, the track name/artist of the song currently being played
Still allow you the device to upload/download data to/from the computer via USB
If you can find all this, and surely they must exist with as many Android devices as there are out there, I'd buy one myself.
If there is not something like this on the market for Micro USB, then you will understand why Apple uses their own port design and the benefits it offers compared to pre-existing but outdated cable options.
Same with people and their phones lol. Which was your point in the first place.

They would if GM started making cars that look too similar to Audi or VW's signature designs. If you stripped the badges off a VW Bug, would you confuse it with any other mass-produced car?
samsung has never put an apple logo on its products. but for that matter, if you're going to bring up similarities--then why was there no lawsuit between nissan and saturn over the 300z/sc1 front appearance? hell, i can probably dredge up a hundred other "styling similarities"...yet these go without suits. i don't recall chrysler being sued by ford because the prowler takes cues from a deuce coupe.
again, we're talking about a device that's small enough to fit in your pocket & has several basic--mandatory--functions. there's not a whole lot of "differentiation" that can be made without sacrificing function.

As I mentioned before, there's a lot of smartphones variations out there at this point. Many of them are doing it right, being different, yet still stylish in their own right. People should want their phones to look different. Different materials, colors, button layout, slide-out keyboard, non-slide-out, bezels, cases, packaging, power adapters, homescreen layouts, etc. The more uniform they all look, the more boring they become. Establish a style of your own -- one where people look at it and go "That looks like something Samsung would make" -- and then you know you've made it.

Referring to the dock. The reason there is no "microUSB" docks is because there has not been a standardization on where to place the microUSB, or a similar shape of the phone. iPhone has that advantage because say 20% of all smartphones are compatible with an iPhone dock, and on top of that, the future iPhones and other iDevices would all use the same jack. IF all other smartphones were able to be compatible with one single design, i'm sure you would see some microUSB docks.
Additionally, there are now cars with USB ports which you can plug your phone into and tap into the media library.
As for the bluetooth, yes there is a limitation on quality, but i'm not an audiophile, and i think it sounds awesome. Actually used that bluetooth stereo for my small ourdoor wedding, playing the music off of my cell phone and it worked great. I am also satisfied with my bose earbuds (MIE2), and think great audio comes out of those too.

I'm sorry man, but this isn't the reason. You can keep telling yourself that, but this argument is about as intelligible as the one found in the iPhone 5 lineup video posted a few posts ago (which was sad, btw, but hopefully the phone makes her happy).
There's a ton of universal and exclusive brand Android-phone docks out there. Manufacturers have already shown that they can make docks that fit a large variety of Android phones (see here (http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/philips-as351-05-android-speaker-dock-p34905.htm)). But they have the same limitations as every other dock that relies on Micro USB: having to resort to Bluetooth or mini-jack for audio.
Additionally, there are now cars with USB ports which you can plug your phone into and tap into the media library.
There are, and what these head units do is basically mount your phone as an external harddrive (using the 2 data in/out pins on the Micro USB plug). It scans/imports your library, and then, unfortunately, you're dependent on the head unit's software to play your music. Kind of sucks if you want to play/pause from your phone, or if the head unit's software is a piece of crap... which most of them are.
As for the bluetooth, yes there is a limitation on quality, but i'm not an audiophile, and i think it sounds awesome. Actually used that bluetooth stereo for my small ourdoor wedding, playing the music off of my cell phone and it worked great. Sadly, I imagine a lot of people have higher standards than you do, especially if they have a nice system. I wouldn't call myself an audiophile either, but I definitely notice the difference in sound quality when I play my phone's music via Bluetooth as opposed to plugging it in via the line-out or the docking port. Night and day difference. Bluetooth is just about as good as listening to FM radio.

Right, I was more referring to the sensationalist headline and the assumption Doc drew from it. Surely a lot of people will read it and assume that the "smartcable" chip serves no function other than trying to prevent other manufacturers from making their own cables, but as it turns out, there's a lot more to it.
Supposedly the Lightning cable costs Apple more to manufacturer than any other cable they've offered before (due to the technology built-in). In some ways, I have to give Apple credit for "re-thinking" something as basic as a cable to find ways to make it a step above their previous cable creations and standard USB. Surely others will follow suit, or it will inspire others to come up with their own solutions to compete with it.
This is exactly what the market needs (from any manufacturer). Don't settle for something old just because it's popular. Press the limits, try new stuff, and if it's obvious that it's superior to anything offered before it, embrace it.

I think this year's release was more of a focus on other innovations than those included in the phone itself. A lot of what Apple hasn't said in their press releases are coming out through these other interested parties (iFixIt, Peter from Double Helix, etc). If I were Samsung, etc, I would be skeptical of what these other changes mean. They seem ridiculous and unnecessary at first, but the long-term implications could be far more imposing. This includes how they'll work with third-party accessories, more advanced docks, and ultimately expandability.
You can keep looking at this simplistically, thinking that the cable is only about saving 1-2 seconds plugging it in, but you'd be making the same mistake many of Apple's competitors are making.
so apple re-invented the gas-pedal because the type in use by the rest of the industry "wasn't good enough". lol!

Let me rephrase then, just to be clear: whether you read the sensationalist article (as I take it you did) or just skimmed the bogus headlines (as other do), it caused you to come to the conclusion that Apple is trying to screw over third-party manufacturers and is therefore "crap."
As for:
If you're going to come in here and personally bash people instead of arguing the point and then try and turn it around and blame me for getting offended, yes, you are a dick.
What do you think I've been doing this entire thread?
Here's me further arguing the point, based on the link Jeremy just posted (from another person thoroughly researching the Lightning cable's implications):
“I find it near incredible to think that Apple would believe they can force the millions of cheap-o cables that got sold up to a $30 Apple purchase.”Nope. The USB cables are $19, not $30. Once other manufacturers get up to speed I see nothing saying a basic Lightning-to-USB cable can’t be made and sold for the proverbial $9.99, and I bet that by the end of next year the price will be even lower.
Coming from the electrical engineering experts, I have a hard time arguing with that.
DocWalt

I didn't come to a conclusion that they're trying to screw over third party manufacturers. When did I say that?
I'm sure a cable can be made for $5.00 eventually, that's not the point. Apple keeps forcing proprietary bullshit on their customers, and that's not ok. The 30 pin connector was a cool idea with its multitude of pins to do some neat stuff, but most of what the 30 pin connector could do can be done with micro-usb and some intelligent coding. Heck, there's HDMI output from micro-usb now. Just in case you missed this post:

Guess what, you need an adapter from "Lightning" to HDMI or VGA... Just like micro USB.
On a side note: Apple lost any business from me when they sent back a "repaired" iPod touch with a screen that suddenly looked like I was stuck in 16bit color mode, with a faulty power button. Fuck Apple.
Oh, and on another side note, the guy that tore the lighting cable apart sells ridiculously overpriced cables that make Monster cables look cheap :lo5l:

That's basically what the article you linked claimed, and by you linking it, I imagine it's safe to assume you endorse it. Am I wrong?

You're right, there is, but that's about where the expandability ends. Coincidently, that's even covered in the link Jeremy posted as well (http://brockerhoff.net/blog/2012/09/23/boom-pins/):
Re: Micro USB to HDMI Cables
If you read the documentation carefully, right inside the micro-USB plug you need a special converter chip which converts those 3 signals to HDMI, and from then on, up to the other end of the cable, you have shielded HDMI wire pairs and a HDMI connector. Of course, this means that you can’t judge that cable by the 5 pins on one end, nor can you say that that specific implementation “transmits audio/video over USB”. It just repurposes the connector. Such a cable would, of course, be significantly more expensive to manufacture than the usual “wires all the way down” cable, and (because of the chip) even more than a standard HDMI cable.
So, once again, you run into the problem of expense. But still you ask, why change to a different style connector than the currently available Micro USB?
Is there another way to transmit audio/video over a standard USB implementation? There are device classes for that, but they’re mostly capable of low-bandwidth applications like webcams; at least for USB2.
So, we're pretty limited with Micro USB in its current state, unless we move up to USB 3.0, which... do they even have Micro USB 3.0 cables that fit your phones? I don't think so.
Anyway, I don't doubt you had a bad experience with Apple. My experiences have generally been pretty pleasant, and that's probably why I even take the time to respond to these threads. Plus it's an interesting topic, that always helps.
DocWalt

Yes, you are wrong. I don't give a damn about the third party manufacturers, I've never had a third party cable work with my stupid iPod Touch and now there's even less of a reason to go with anything aftermarket. My point was Apple making proprietary crap for the sake of making proprietary crap.
Lighting is still USB2.0 at the other end, unless it's on a dock where the dock needs to do most of the processing. You still need an expensive dock to perform any of what you're claiming is so great about Lightning.

Alright Doc, I don't know any other way to put it for you. What Apple plans to do with Lightning is not currently possible to do via Micro USB or any existing mini-cable alone.
This is fact, undebatable, shown in multiple instances with existing Micro USB accessories, docks, you name it. You're arguing a point that has no evidence to support the contrary.
And while Lightning is currently USB 2.0 on the other end, if you further read the resources equally available to you as they are to me, you would find this:
Teardown revives hopes that Lightning might be USB 3.0-compatible | Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/09/teardown-revives-hopes-that-lightning-might-be-usb-3-0-compatible/)
Although it's clear at this point that the iPhone 5 only sports USB 2.0 speeds, initial discussions of Lightning's support of USB 3.0 have focused on its pin count—the USB "Super Speed" 3.0 spec requires nine pins to function, and Lightning connectors only have eight.
However, iFixit's teardown shows the pins in the iPhone 5's Lightning receptacle, and there are two extras on either side:
The Lightning connector itself has two divots on either side for retention, but these extra electrical connections in the receptacle could possibly be used as a ground return, which would bring the number of Lightning pins to the same count as that of USB 3.0—nine total.
If this is the case, then it shows that Apple has at least thought ahead with its new plug, and may have future-proofed it to support USB 3.0. This would be a wise tactical move on Apple's part and could open the door to Lightning being used to supplement Thunderbolt as a second high-speed standard port, rather than as a one-off iPhone connector competing awkwardly with USB 2.
That's about all there is to say about it.

What Apple plans to do and what they do are two different things, look at the 30 pin connector.
"Might be" USB3.0 compatible.
Yes, that IS all there is to say about it.
so let me get this straight...
apple debuts "technology" which "might" someday, at a later point in time, actually provide some benefit that is not possible with existing "tech". so even in a best-case scenario, it's dropping this "technology" on a public that won't need it until at least next-year's iphone. it's not like they're pushing to have an "established" support base for this cord. they could just as easily have kept the old analog cord until there was sufficient necessity to warrant this "new" connector.
apple is simply screwing the pooch on this.

What's wrong with future-proofing? If they don't change the connector again for the next decade (which they likely won't), will you guys still be complaining?
If Lightning is truly only capable of USB 2.0 in the long run, then yes - they're screwing the pooch. All of Apple's laptops support USB 3.0 these days, but surprisingly there's still a lot of computers out there that don't support USB 3.0 yet. To bother with creating a new port, they best plan on staying with it for awhile like they did their now retired 30-pin connector.
Regardless, and what's comical about this whole thing, is that the cable is pretty much irrelevant at this point for the things you guys are concerned about. We already have built-in wi-fi sync, which allows us to add/remove music, transfer data and create backups without a cable, and we have AirPlay and Bluetooth to easily stream audio without a cable. The only things left, and the port's main purpose, is for two key things: charging, and offering expandability with third-party accessories (camera kits, docks, etc).
As the information that's coming out is indicating, making a charge cable for the new Lightning port should be pretty easy and inexpensive. Power is power, and ground is ground. The built-in chip may not even play much of a factor in this. As far as the accessories go, this port is great news. I guarantee you that just like the 30-pin connector, third-party accessory manufacturers will be fully utilizing the functionality Lightning offers over Micro USB. We're going to see some more cool stuff, along the lines of: universal remotes (http://voomote.tv/en/voomotezapper/design/), blood-pressure sensors (http://www.withings.com/en/bloodpressuremonitor), guitar inputs (http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/jam.php)/MIDI interfaces (http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigmidi/), wireless microphones (http://shop.soulo.com/products/soulo-digital-wireless-mic), ODB-II dongles (http://www.gadgetreview.com/2011/01/cartrip-odb-ii-to-ios-dongle.html), and advanced head units (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113KIV901B/Kenwood-KIV-BT901.html?tp=5684).
Considering you guys don't even use Apple products because of your own biases, I'm surprised you guys are making such a big stink over this.
1. what NEW computer doesn't support usb 3.0?
2. i would have been equally silly for MS to have gone x64 native on windows 98.
the "big stink" over this is because this is one more area in which apple is demonstrating its resolve to be a gigantic douche. when you can show me tangible proof of a real, factual, actually-implemented, commercially-distributed feature that lighting uses & that micro/mini usb cannon--then i'll concede the point. problem is...by the time that happens, we'll probably be on usb 4.0, and that argument will be vapor.

And now there is rumor of a $99 tablet coming out from Google.
The Nexus 7 BTW is $199/$249 for 8gb/16gb. The major "flaw" or lack of feature IMO is that it does not have a microSD. Stock though it is capable of using thumb drives and external HDs with an OTG cable.

We called them on Saturday. They set us up an appointment on early Sunday with no hastle.
When we arrived at the store we were greeted and actually taken before the scheduled time.
15-20 minutes later we were leaving with a new phone.
It was the first time I had been to an Apple store but everything was very professional.
The most impressive thing was a family of 6 that covered 3 generations getting a personal session.
The update may have messed up the phone but they fixed it.
Some of the best customer service I have had in a long time.

IPD, I actually had a post started regarding some of my honest to goodness gripes about iOS6, Maps being one of them.
It isn't that it's a complete catastrophe for my usage -- it's not (navigation works great, my city appears to be mapped correctly, etc), but it is clear from the images posted online that Apple Maps wasn't completely ready to come out of the oven just yet.
Have you read up yet on why Apple decided to make their own mapping solution (e.g. Google trying to force Google Latitude on Apple users, collecting and profiting off search result usage, withholding turn-by-turn for their own OS, etc)? In the long run, this was probably the right decision for Apple and its users.
In the end, Apple has admitted that their rendition of Maps has some catching up to do by apologizing and conceding to the competition. When they get there, which they will eventually, hopefully they'll give Google Maps a run for their money. This will inspire Google to step up their game and not become complacent with "being on top" (benefiting you), and it'll free Apple to take more control over their mapping solutions and maybe find some solutions that haven't been done before (benefiting us).
By the way, as much as you want to see it this way, Apple isn't just a "hipster" thing. I'm not a hipster, nor do I have any hipster friends, yet I see how Apple has made it easier for me to do the things that I need and want to do. I hope you've learned enough about me at this point to realize that this doesn't just entale Facebooking or posting on the forums, but actually embarking on a career that wouldn't be possible without computers and technology. I'm still quite content with my decision to use Apple-made products.
oh believe me, i don't want apple out of business. i fully understand the need for competition to eliminate complacency. i'm a HUGE AMD fan, after all. that said, what grinds my gears about apple is because they are deliberately acting as though there shouldn't be any competition. like any competition at all is somehow infringing upon "their" market.
we've argued both sides of this throughout this thread. the bottom line is, apple is only content NOT suing over phones that are cumbersome, unintuitive, or lackluster. legitimate products that genuinely threaten to deliver more performance & function than the iphone are seen as infringing--no matter how banal, trivial, or illogical the infringement claim is. doors are very functional on a car. imagine if GM decided to patent the car door. ford & chrysler could produce any size, shape or color of car they wanted---but it couldn't have doors; because GM owns the patent on doors.
that's the problem with this litigation. apple is trying to sue over patents that should never have been granted. for any given functional device, there are certain "Baseline" capabilities and functions that must be "open domain" or else there can be no competition. this is how apple speaks with forked tongue. it claims it wants to push the market forward, but it stifles any and all who come close to parity by insisting that those rivals are infringing.

It's always interesting to see what people come up with after an iPhone release. I hear these things and I wonder how widespread they actually are (e.g. what are the chances my photos will exhibit this behavior, etc), and more often than not they're grossly exaggerated by the people that don't even own the iPhone in question.
So, I've set out to actively try to recreate this purple lens flair (just for this thread). So far, I haven't had much luck. Well... with that 1 in 1000 chance that you might get some purple flair in your photo... that's up to you.
In the meantime, here's a few other photos I took with the iPhone 5 camera over the last few weeks:

Looks like at about 6 seconds, you got the purple haze. Still not bad though.

Apple on iPhone 5 purple flare: You're aiming it wrong - CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/08/tech/mobile/iphone-5-purple-haze/index.html?hpt=hp_c3)
i'd say pretty widespread, shaun. but i'm also not surprised that apple's first response--as always--is:

i have to hand it to them. i don't think any of us could even wipe our own asses if apple didn't explain the proper procedure.

Purple glare or not the iPhone 5 still has one of the best cameras on the market.

Very true, especially in low light. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Lumia 920 real world results.

I am very eager for everyone to get their hands on this phone and test the hell out of it. Like the iPhone I'm sure people will nit pick the hell out of the phone, but I pray that a 920 variant comes to Verizon.

Here's some other news, going back to the Lightning plug conspiracy theory. Turns out that wasn't an "authentication" chip after all, but rather just a chip that's main purpose is to route power and signals to the appropriate pins (as I was talking about earlier):
Apple's Lightning authentication chip may have been reverse engineered (http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/10/09/apples-lightning-authentication-chip-may-have-been-reverse-engineered)
Company Unveils First iPhone 5 Lightning Dock (http://mashable.com/2012/10/05/lightning-dock-for-iphone-5/)
Certainly didn't take long. :p

so rather than simply putting an inexpensive and intuitive "bump" on one side of the plug...so that it's easy to identify in pitch-black, they decided to drastically increase the cost of the cable by adding a microchip instead.
on second thought, i approve. most apple consumers are too dumb to figure out which way the plug should face, so this is probably a brilliant move.

Sadly, from what I understand, inductive charging still has a long way to go before it can be considered a comparable alternative to plugging in via a wire. 50% of the energy is lost to heat generation, or something like that. Your devices also would not recharge nearly as fast.
Wireless syncing/backup is built into iOS though. No lightning cable required.

My HTC Trophy (Windows Phone) has wireless sync as well. I'm not sure if Android has it but I don't see why it wouldn't be a standard on most phones.
