So, I have gotten the bug to get back into some photography. I am by no means a professional, but one in particular that I snapped today made me semi-proud of myself.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff92/stealthee3k/photography/still_waters_by_insignificantone-d5bpskf.jpg

I'm going to try to keep snapping away but I really need to replace my rechargable AA batteries, or just get me some rechargable CV3's. Comments? Suggestions? Post some of your own random photography if you want too.

Great pic location...

Composure wise is all in the eye of the shooter, but I would have pulled in, and up some, and blurred the foreground with aperture to draw the eye toward the subject in the back.

That may have helped with depth of field with lighting as well pulling the reflection off the water. Something I am playing with is shooting same scene, but in 10-15 minute increments when light is changing in the beginning, or end of day to see the color warmth/coolness changes. Again all in the eye on the person behind the shutter.

Wish I had warm flat light for this one, but you get what comes at you (edit: I also could have used fill flash to pull the shadowed chest and face up)
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-l5JRCnyt2aI/ScrSycPRSgI/AAAAAAAADxo/il_7BUT9MkE/s1024/_DSC5048.JPG

Again mid day bright harsh light, but was there
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ZKGmPwIS-QU/ScrVRWGJyUI/AAAAAAAADyc/3m5fn2ZrVdw/s1024/_DSC4991.JPG

I used the foreground foliage blurred to frame the subject in this one
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hwwvJ7dObgw/ScrZnWOqoTI/AAAAAAAADzE/NMwbphq8X48/s1024/_DSC4828.JPG

This is more playing with framing, and aperture

Ok here are some more. The first one was taken a few years back.

The second was taken the same day as the pic I posted first. This pic was actually taken less than 1/4 mile from the location of the pic in the first post. Not my best work, but due to the location of some branches and a very steep ledge it was the best I could do.

The third pic was taken a few days ago off my back porch.

Man snow is so hard to get the color temp correct. I have a love hate with it. Great color in that one, or the lack of. Mine usually wind up blue. I need to get a grey card.

I think the overcast conditions helped me in that instance.

I was looking at some filters the other day. I just need to pull the trigger and get them. I really would like to get a lens with more zoom too, but I'll be lucky to find one. That's the breaks of using a camera with a small following.

Some night time...

The last one had different temp up lighting on it, and it affected the outcome of the color. Could fix in PS, but have not...

A girl I talk to got me back into it. She gave me a link to a site where people post random literature, art, photography, etc. She's a writer, more than anything, but told me I should join up and post some of my photos. I posted some of my older stuff and decided to go get some new pics.

I want to take that valley shot again in about a month. Should look awesome. There is another National Park around Morgantown, WV that has some awesome trails and views. I haven't been up there in awhile. Figure its time to get back up there and snap away.

I'd like to get someone to go with me though. I'll need to get a bigger memory card (only get 88 photos on 1GB shooting in RAW) and some new batteries. I'd be pissed if my batteries died after shooting 20 photos.

I have found that Adobe Lightroom is a lot better/easier at most post processing. I love the fact that it does all of its work on the raw image as well.

At $149(or less) its a bargin compared to PS and much better at editing that the Nikon software.

I went on a hike and snapped some more photos yesterday.

The first pic was pure luck. I was walking down the trail when I heard one deer get up and take off through the woods. I got another 50 feet down the trail and this doe stood up not 5 feet from me. The only thing that sucked is I had just messd with some of the settings on a previous picture because I was getting washout from the sun so I darkened it up. I didn't have a chance to check the previews and adjust settings because I didn't want to miss the shot.

The second pic was taken at the same location of the pic in my original post. I just moved to a different spot on the pond, and it was earlier in the day for this shot.

All in all I am slightly disappointed. I shot over 60 photos and not one of them do I consider good shots. :-/

The deer is great!

I try to keep my subject, and horizon lines out of the center of the picture using the 1/3rd rule. Of course there are times this is not the case.

Another thing to think about with composition is giving the eye something to follow through out the shot using shot placement, natural lines of contrast/color, such as a branch that starts from say the lower left corner heading diagonal across the frame to the subject. Giving the eye something to follow that draws the attention to the subject of your choice can take the same scene shot from different location/angle and tell many stories.

An old timer friend of mine would take me out and give me one scene, and tell me to shoot as many stories as I could pull off. He then would take the camera without looking at what I shot and do the same. With around 20 - 30 shots each, there would only be one or two that were similar. It is a great way to tune your eye to "see" the shot quicker, and to go outside the box to see what you would normally not.

He also kept repeating that the definition of photography is to tell stories with light...

I have much practicing to do... lol

She definitely startled me. I was lost in my own world and BAM she's right in front of me. She started to leave then turned right back around and took a few steps toward me. Then she was getting irritated with me so I left her alone and continued on my way.

I went on long ass hike today at Coopers Rock near Morgantown, WV. Took about 25 photos, but wasn't super happy with any of them.

There are some of the best photographers from the forum posting in this thread. For those of you who have done portraits, do you have any suggestions on how to get proper lighting for "Family Christmas Photos"?

My brother and sister-in-law were talking about having me take photos for Christmas of them and there kids. I actually did a Christmas portrait of them on two occasions and people loved them. They thought they were done professionally, but I saw plenty of problems and was not satisfied. My biggest issue (other than dealing with my nephew who can't sit still for more than 2 seconds) was poor lighting. I tried a few different things in the room but nothing seemed to help.

What kind of settings would you recommend I set the camera too? Stuff like white balance, ISO, etc.

If the kids would sit still longer I could take several photos in several settings, then pick the best, but that option is slightly limited so I would like to try to get the settings, well. set, and start shooting as soon as people are in position.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated. I think they were talking about doing the photos next week. If they come out good enough I will post them up here.

Ryan, I just have a built in flash. I am not a portrait person either. I guess my brother is not looking for "professional" photos, just stuff to use on Christmas cards, etc. I am just tough on myself and want to be able to have the chance to do the best job possible.

Alan92RTTT
11-28-2012, 11:33 AM
If all you have is the on camera flash you might have better luck getting a good pic by going outside and using natural lighting.
I'd try:
Outside
Shoot RAW
Shoot aperture priority and open the aperture to get a soft background
Take two pics one with a piece of white paper held by one of the family one without. The kids only have to site still for the second as the 1st is just to capture white balance. You can use the 1st pic to figure correct white balance in post and set the second pic to it.

sorry i didnt see this til now.

Based on experience, I would recommend:

1 - tripod. this is paramount because of the next tip which is...
2 - drag the shutter. use shutter speeds of 1/15 or slower. this will pick up the ambient light even if you use flash. say you got a fireplace or candles or warm lighting in a room. slower shutter speeds will pick up that ambient light and give a warm glow to the photo.
3 - use bounce flash if possible. aim it up and away. most flash heads now swivel and twist the flash head so this is very easy to do. *ALSO - using flash will "freeze" your subjects. as long as they can sit for a second (even kids), you should be fine.

here is an example I did for my grandma a while back. all it is is a tripod mounted shot, on selftimer of 2 seconds, bounce flash, with a dragged shutter at ISO200. the slow shutter picks up just enough ambient light and the lights on the tree, with the flash filling in.

Thanks Macky. I definitely plan to use the tripod.

I'll see if I can find the past Christmas pictures I took and post them up. Again, other people asked where they had the pictures taken, and they told them I took them in our living room and they were shocked. I myself, did not like the results. I really am my own worst critic.

I totally understand. I'm the same way too. I always shoot and reshoot something until I get it *right* and the way I like it. Sometimes being your own worst critic has its benefits too. the perfect shot is always a moving target. I always find ways to improve my shot every time, and I still have a LOT to learn :)

What is your thought if stuck with on board flash, lowering the flash output to gather ambient?

Also, did you light the front of the car with bright lights on both sides, and adjust exposure?

My biggest problem with those photos was space. My living room is like 16 foot wide and with the placement of the tree it made things difficult for placement.

The house my brother lives in now has a big living room so hopefully I will have more to work with.

lol my only comment on that pic is the ornament that fell from the tree that is just below the kid's right hand :D

personally his pic is perfect and just needed a bit of cropping from either end :)

yes. i usually do -1/3 only, then boost ISO a step or two.

the nose shot of my MR was with two strobes. the headlights and fogslights were actually on, but i stopped down the aperture to F11 so you see a dim light on the fogs and can barely tell the HIDs were on.

Thanks! Trying to soak in different low light techniques. They are a bitch for me to get right...

Low light has always been my problem for a long time back then. What I learned was that I could use mid-level ISO speeds and open up the aperture more. then I just freeze everything with a higher shutter speed.

this way, i can get some background lighting to come in despite the power of the strobes. and also have enough sensitivity so that i can also get a correct exposure.

Random! Got home for my wheel delivery, and this eagle (one of a pair that moved in) was up top this tree being harassed by a crow. Pissed off, they can make a ruckus. I missed out on capturing the crow as he fled when the cam came out...

It's aperture, f/4.5 on a 55-250mm f/4-22 canon lens at iso 100 and 1/50 exposure.

You still rocking the Rebel? I was looking into getting that 55-250 - heard it's a nice budget lens!

lawdogg

Yeah I still have it but I never use it any more because I lust for a nicer body ... that came out wrong.

But, the 55-250 ISO is a nice budget zoom lens and it's also great for close-ups so long as you're standing a good three feet away. :p

EricB

He's a bengal cat. Bengals are wild Asian Leopard cats mixed with a domesticated cat. I think he's an F6 which is 6 generations from being wild.

He is quite literally a dog. He loves going on walks, playing in water, and he loves playing fetch.

He's definitely a hand full though!

My sister in-law has something similar to that. Freaky cats! They are like dogs. This damn thing will fetch till you get sick of it. Then bring the toy, drop it at your feet, lay down, and stare at you. They have a harness like that one does, and take him everywhere. Crazy $$ though...

Edit: Oh I forgot, we found out the cat has a trigger word the last visit. Say "Birdy" and he hauls ass to the back door, and starts freaking out looking outside making the weirdest noises. :lmao:

First guy I worked for back in my teenage years had a dalmation that would freak out if you told him to get the bird. He would look up and stand on his hind legs looking everywhere for a bird, even if he was in the shop.

One of my coworkers at another place I worked had a black lab that he would bring to work occasionally. You'd tell the dog to go get you a stick and he would take off outside and come back with a stick. If you watched him, when he went outside he would jump up and grab a limb still attached to a tree and hang on it and shake the hell out of it until it broke. He also loved to fetch. The one time I threw his tennis ball up to the 3rd level to see if he could find it. He looked at me, looked up at the third level then took off looking for the stairs. 3 minutes later that damn dog came back with the ball.

I haven't posted pics in here in forever

Took this one yesterday at Pittsburgh Raceway. They were having a Nostalgia Day.

This truck caught my eye, because I have always loved this body style C10. When the truck pulled to the line later in the day I had no idea what I was in for. It did a massive wheel stand and still ran a low 9.
