View Full Version : Suspension About to throw on lowering springs. Any other suggestions while I'm at it?

I have some lowering springs I plan to put on really soon. I also have some new slotted rotors I'll be installing at the same time and will buy some ceramic pads to throw on as well. Rebuilt and powdercoated calipers are on my wishlist, but doubt I'll have time or $ for that just yet.

Anyone have suggestions as for any suspension upgrades or bushings I should replace while I'm at it? I already replaced the DS tie rod end and have a new PS tie rod end I'll be replacing while everything's apart. I'm not aware of anything else that would be a good idea to replace at this time, but hoping someone will chime in.

A 2nd set or different type of clamps would help as it's hard to grab on to anything but the middle 2 coils and these don't squeeze them together close enough. Rears should be much easier since they're taller.

What brand of springs?

They're Eibachs. Supposed to be 1.5 drop in front and 1.3 drop in rear.
My ECS Struts are set to medium. Hopefully it will be a smooth ride with much less wheel gap.
Got some ceramic pads for the front. Hopefully I can get the front springs/rotors/pads done sometime this week.

Noone has suggestions for anything else I should take care of while I'm doing this?

Rear upper control arms. Get them as well. Without these you can not adjust the camber as much as you will need to.

I installed Tein S-Techs, and also bought Maximal's control arms, but was waiting until I had the car in for a line-up before installing them - however with the S-Techs, I'm not suffering any camber problems at all, so I'm not in any hurry to install the control arms.

I believe the Eibachs have a drop similar to th S-Techs.

For what it's worth...

I had eibach springs, ditched em for megans. They were nice but didnt drop the car enough for me (my sig is when i still had eibachs). I would replace the upper mounts in the front and check the upper rubber bushings in the rear. If they look cracked buy some new ones. Since you are FWD you need rear camber and toe arms. I suggest maximal for the arms and grab some of the boots for the rod ends from 3sx these: Rubber Boot Cover for Spherical Heim Joint Rod Ends*-*Mitsubishi 3000GT*/*Dodge Stealth Parts (http://www.3sx.com/store/comersus_viewItemBundle.asp?idProduct=30365) the boots keep rocks out of the joint and help keep the suspension squeak down.

depending on how many miles you have but i would replace the ball joints also. my son had one car with tein s and the other with megans, since we have 2 cars to compare believe me get the tein s ..with the megans set for the softest you still need a kidney belt to ride in it,

+1 on the S-Tech ride - I don't find it harsh at all.

As to the boots, I have two sets left - I think - of the boots I ordered for my Maximal control arms.

You can get the boots here cheaper than 3sx:

heim joint boots | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=heim+joint+boots&_sacat=0)

I jut don't remember the size needed.

How did you set the ECS to medium?

I'm good like that.... :p

I built a tool that allows me to select the setting on the strut manually. At BRG a couple weeks ago I set his car up to medium so he could drive the dragon.

Hmm, I want medium. Sport is too stiff for normal roads, and tour is to boat like.

Thanks for the tips guys. I really don't know a whole lot about suspension.
93k on the body. Ball joints look ok, one of them had a busted boot, but I replaced that whole control arm with a good used one.
I'm considering the adjustable rears and boots. Ebay prices are only as cheap as $7 shipped each. If I'm in Charlotte this weekend anyway, maybe I could pick some up from 3sx.
I might just skip this step for now so I can go ahead and get the springs on. Hopefully tackling this thursday or friday.
I can't think of anything that's really in the way or that can't be just as easily replaced later.

Corey I think he might be selling this device soon :)
I have to say I was pretty impressed.
Would they be able to stay in medium with your ECS computer still attached?

With the ecs computer attached no. The self test will move them into soft mode unless a strut fails. If it fails it says in the position it failed at or when the motor stopped turning.

It will be a while before I start selling them. Have to get all of the parts acquired first. I'll probably work on them over the winter and have them up for sale come spring.... Maybe!!

Depending on how much salt your car has seen, the rear concentric bolts may be seized in the bushings of the camber/ toe arms . If thats the case, its a PITA to get them off. Mine were and i had to use a angle grinder and sawzall to get em out

Well, got new ceramic pads all around. That's the main thing I was waiting on so I can do all this in one shot. Should I mess with the ebrake shoes? I've never seen them wear out before, maybe just tighten them up a little. Guess I'll see when I have it apart.

Also, I think I'm going to attempt to paint the calipers with some black caliper paint. Good idea or bad idea? Suggestions? Saving powdercoating for when they're rebuilt or replaced.

Picked up some spring/strut removal tools. In the past I used some makeshift bolts and brackets, lol. The proper tools were cheap and should work better and will be much safer. Only $13 :)

I'll be sure to take some before and after pics and get some good measurements. Can't wait to have all this done.

Addenda to my previous postage about not needing my adjustable control arms...I'm going to put them on when I get the chance - I'm getting a bit of out-of-whack, camber-wise; it seems the springs have settled some.

I think it may be attributable to the weight of the sub-box and my fat-ass.
