Favorite games for this year in my free time include Deus Ex HR (PS3), Max Payne 3 (PS3) and Diablo III (PC). :)
There's a lot of games I like, just so little time.

I was a big fan of the first one, so I bought it for nostalgia's sake. At the time, I saw more positive reviews on it than negative (unlike Diablo III, which is getting hammered out there). Still seems to rank 4/5 stars on Amazon. I would suggest getting it for PC as opposed to for console, though.
In short: I'm happy with it. It's a fun game.

Bump this thread with what you think. For less than $20, might as well!
Just as a caveat though, I'm not sure if non-DX fans will like it. The original was one of my all-time favorites.

PS3 MW3, computer Diablo III and BF3
STO (star trek online). Been playing this almost exclusively since march. I've gone back and started playing rogue-squadron 1 for shits & giggles. Imho, STO > EVE....but I'm sure that there's some convincing arguments on both sides. Space combat in STO is way better than SW:TOR, or so I've heard.
Dx1 is an awesome game. Dx2 wasn't bad, but not quite as good as 1. Haven't played 3 yet.
When I get tired of griding out STO, I'll probably switch to Fallout:NV--which I still haven't touched. I occasionally play alien-swarm as well (free on steam).
Never touched COD, BF or halo. Never felt like I was missing anything; I was too busy with UT2k4 back in the day.

Dark Souls on PS3 was the last... a very difficult game by today's standards, which is why I bought it. Graphics are very good as well. Beat the first playthrough, second playthrough is 3-4 times harder IMO. Before that, it was Arkham City, beat the game, didn't quite finish all the side quests, some of those Riddler things I couldn't figure out for the life of me.

I play, but not often. Skyrim and MW3 mostly, I'd play Rage if it worked (Will not let me exit town without crashing). Loved Fallout 3, New Vegas, UT (all of them) and Portal2. Have DX HR, never been able to get into it.
All on the PC.

Do you have a ATI based graphics card? I had one when I got rage and could not play it. WHen batman AC came out I got in on the buy a Nvidia card and get Batman free deal. Rage works fine now.
I need to figure out why Duke forever will not work. Not a huge priority as I got it for $5 from Steam.

I had heard they finally got the drivers working for Rage. Shame.
woah! DNF is now $5? i'm going to have to check that out!
as far as STO, I already have my own fleet started, so if we want to get a 3sgto group together, i'm willing to donate my fleet to the cause. I'll even promote Alan to leader. :)
I've already got a few fleet missions started, so with a little bit more help, we should be able to get that tier 1 starbase in no time at all!

I got out of PC games when I got my Xbox. Got tired of having to upgrade hardware every year or so to stay up to date with graphics/processors just to play the latest games. Plus I spend all day on a computer for work. So going home and playing on one just wasn't the same. Console is a different feel and a nice welcomed change after sitting in front of a computer all day long.

I was playing SC2 ladder an average of about 5-7 hours per week until my twins came four months ago. Haven't played competitively since.
Every once in awhile I get a small window of time to play D3 (read: 30 mins to an hour) but I haven't felt the urge to play any games for the past few weeks. I'm sure that will change when I'm no longer getting less than 5 hours of sleep per day, but if I ever get a longer window of free time I'll be spending it on my car.

10-year-long video game creates 'hellish nightmare' world - CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/18/tech/gaming-gadgets/civilization-ii-ten-years/index.html)
(CNN) -- Can you imagine playing a single video game for 10 years?
One man did. And it helped him imagine something else: a bleak, war-ravaged future version of Earth.
A member of the social news website Reddit who goes by the name Lycerius posted his results from a decade-long game of "Civilization II," a turn-based strategy games in which players build their own society. His epic struggle pushed the game to its limits, further than developers ever imagined or planned for.
The "Civilization" franchise is a series of strategy games that allow players to grow small tribes into large, sprawling nations. Players can manage resources, build armies and engage in diplomacy in an effort to grow their civilization into a world leader.
"Civilization II" was released in 1996. But when the third version of the game was released in 2001, Lycerius said, he was already deep into his current game and wanted to see how far he could go.
He doesn't play every day but returns to what he called a "hellish nightmare of suffering and devastation" when he has some free time.
Now in the year 3991, his world is down to three super-nations, each competing for dwindling resources, and a planet left scarred by multiple nuclear wars. His Celts are locked in a 1,700-year war with the Vikings and the Americans. All other nations have been destroyed or absorbed.
"Peace seems to be impossible. Every time a cease fire is signed, the Vikings will surprise attack me or the Americans the very next turn, often with nuclear weapons," Lycerius wrote on Reddit. "Even when the U.N forces a peace treaty. So I can only assume that peace will come only when they're wiped out. It is this that perpetuates the war ad infinitum."
Because of the continual fighting, he was forced to abandon his democracy and adopt a communist state, because his Senate kept overruling him when he wanted to declare war. Also, his cities are filled with starving people (90% of his world's population died from nuclear annihilation or famine from global warming) because, he says, he has to keep building war machines to sustain his combat efforts.
"So you want a granary so you can eat? Sorry; I have to build another tank instead. Maybe next time," he wrote.
Constant nuclear bombardment and sabotage have melted the world's ice caps over and over again, resulting in the flooding of all terrain other than mountains. He said his world is full of swamp (which is useless for farming) and irradiated lands.
"Civilization" franchise creator Sid Meier said developers never even thought about someone taking a "Civ" game this far into the future.
"There's no way we could have tested for this, so it was a surprise to us," Meier said. "I can't say that we ever thought anyone would play a game of 'Civ' for that long. It's exciting that a fan of the series would dedicate 10 years to playing one continuous game."
Before you think Lycerius is just an unfeeling ruler, he said he does want to find a way to end the longstanding war.
"My goal for the next few years is to try and end the war and thus use the engineers to clear swamps and fallout so that farming may resume. I want to rebuild the world. But I'm not sure how. "
Reddit users have been filling up his post with suggestions on how to make his world livable again. And a new thread has developed, called The Eternal War, where players are chatting about their own experiences.
Meier has a new challenge for Lycerius.
"We should probably send him a copy of 'Civ V' and 'Civ V: Gods & Kings.' Maybe in 10 years, he can create a similar scenario. We applaud you for playing what's sure to be the longest-running game of 'Civ' ever."

you must have stopped playing pc games a LONG time ago then. pc games haven't really been taxing hardware in several generations. it doesn't take a whole lot of chutzpa to run 1080p, which is what everything is designed to play in these days. besides...all that money that you're supposedly "saving" on not buying a half-way decent pc....is being eaten up by paying premiums for console games.

New PC Games are a major tax on hardware specifically the Video Card. Unless your playing Tiny-Toons or something low graphic.
Crysis 2 was the last game I messed with on PC. I am running a quad core AMD black x64 at 4.5ghz with 8gb ddr3 ram and 3x nividia gtx9800 GPUs in SLI. If I can't run the game with full video effects on max I'm not going to play it!! Had performance issues with both Crysis 2 and Battlefield Bad Company 2.
And the concept of Steam SUCKS!! Go out buy a game get home all excited to play and you spend the next 12 hours waiting for it to download.. WTF!! I picked up a couple older games like "Left 4 Dead" Get home and install the disk to find out the disk only comes with a fucking Steam install!!! I waited 6-9 hours for the game to download from their shit servers... I was so pissed!! I don't even think I played the $5.00 game that long.
In the end I'll stick with console as they are all designed to use the same hardware/technology so the game play is the same on every system and when I buy the game I maybe have a 10-20 min download for patches and such not wait for the entire game to download........

Love Steam here. I've spent about $80 so far this sale. Not too bad, as I've done a lot worse before. And 6-9 hours to download? How bad is your connection? Whenever I pickup a game, it's always maxing my bandwidth, never taking more than an hour, maybe 2. About the only time it takes longer is if I buy something for each account and all 3 are downloading at once. (me, wife, kids have our own Steam accounts)
Crysis 2 didn't really do much for graphics. Definitely was a step back from the original. Didn't even support DX11 out of the box and when the DX11 patch was released it was crap. Low res textures, big blocky poly's, just another console port. A single 480GTX will max everything in that game and wonder what you were thinking. BF3 and Witcher 2 can tax new rigs pretty good, but unfortunately most games today are console ports made to run at 720p/30fps on 5 generation old GPU's. I'm still running a 285GTX and haven't had the need to upgrade as there aren't any games that I play that have really put it down yet.

The issue was not my connection but the Steam servers.... Don't know if it was due to it being an older game and they allot they bandwidth to newer games but the ones I had to download took forever and it really turned me away from steam.

so let me get this straight:
you won't play pc games unless you can max out the video settings on everything....and if you can't do that, you will play it on a console where you're limited to 1080p?

jeremy is spot-on. 99.9% of all pc games simply will not tax your hardware--especially if you have a desktop. the reason laptop gaming has become "acceptable", is because of the absolute fail on the part of software developers to continue to push graphics forward.

I'd agree that there are plenty of taxing games, but they are certainly in the minority. Crysis, Batman: Arkham Asylum, etc, are the exceptions, not the rule.
If I can run SC2 on ultra and maintain 60+ fps during a massive battle with something as budget-oriented as a GTS 450 (a $100 card), I'd say I have a video card that can handle much more than just "ancient or low-end games."

care to explain how COD or BF are even remotely taxing on a PC....when they were designed to run an a shitty-ass console at a max of 1080p? and honestly, in any event--my point is valid. how can you possibly knock the graphics on your pc if you're willing to settle for console gaming?

just making a quick note here as I've seen it a few times now...
The consoles don't play anything at 1080p. The max resolution they run is 720p and upscale it to 1080 and a max of 30fps (at least as far as the last time I looked at anything with them). The hardware in the console is simply not capable of playing anything decent if it actually rendered 1080.

Please name all these taxing games. If it plays at max settings and over 60fps at 1920X1080+ on hardware from within the last 3 years, then it is not taxing. Go look at most video card reviews lately, and you'll see that they have to run 2560X1600 just to get the average between 45-60fps.

Care to narrow down your logic a bit? We are not talking about consoles with linear hardware. "hardware from 3 within the last 3 years" could mean a variety of things. a 2000+ dollar computer from 3 years ago may still be viable where as your typical gamer pc "700-1200" may not. The vast majority of high graphics pc games will not play on max settings on "3 year old hardware". At least not in the 45-60 frames I want it to be at.
As for titles that fit these criteria when they were released I can only speak for the games I have played that were taxxing.
Crisis 2
Max Payne 3
Battlefield 3
Bullettime
Metro 2033
Bioshock - Any of them
Aliens Vs Predator
Batman Arkham city
Dirt 3
Dragon Age 2
RAGE
Deus Ex: HR
Dead Island
Mass Effect 3
Dead Space 2
The Witcher 2
Skyrim
Rift
I'm sure there are others, but these were all games there were taxxing on my rig at the time they were released. I bought a 6950 for BF3 because I wanted to play it in its full glory and it was very choppy on my 4850 even with the settings turned down. Of course you can always make tweaks to the graphics settings or turn them down. I'm talking about 1920x1080 with everything turned up to its max, because that is how I play every game.
and IPD, I'm not sure who mentioned COD or said it was taxing (doesn't look very pretty to me and I haven't ever played it), but BF3 is one of the most visually appealing games out right now(excluding Metro 2033, because that game is beyond beautiful). When I play it on my quadcore rig with a 6950 and monitor what my computer is doing, all 4 of the cores and my graphics card are at high usage. That is the definition of being "taxxed" Whether or not you think the game is optimized for PC or not... the game is beautiful and it takes decent hardware to get it that way.
Maybe if you stopped preaching about games not being taxxing and actually actually went and bought one of the games that is tougher on your computer you would change your opinion. I can guarantee you, however, that as long as your just skimming sales on Steam waiting for them to hit 5 dollars... that isn't going to happen.

I switched to console as what I get is what I get in games. They are set to run on the hardware I play them on at max settings no fussing about the graphics. No worries on buying a new game and wondering if it will run and have to check specs on the game before purchasing it.
Most of my hardware is 3+ years old and was pretty much top of the line when I bought it. Even though I run 3 cards SLI they are each only 512mb ea and single thread gpu's. So if I get a new game for it my hardware is really not up to the task anymore. If I wanted to play newer games I would need to re-clock the GPU's/Voltage and Do some bench testing to be sure it is stable to handle a couple hours of playing. Now I could go out and spend $2-3k and update my PC but why?? It runs all of my video editing, 3d design and graphics software just fine I have no need to upgrade just to p[lay a newer game I'll just get it for the console.
Now my console is also 3+ years old and I can buy any new game and not worry about it not working or playing like it should in the console.
I used to be majorly against consoles and would only play PC games, But then I realized the cost of PC games and keeping up with hardware/video/software just did not make financial sense when I could buy a console and it would not out-date itself for 5+ years.

I'm currently hooked on Mass Effect 3 (I'm in love with Femshepard) and SW:TOR! (Where I can also be Femshepard!).

2-3k on a desktop computer is insane. $1,200 would get you a computer that would be good for years. Once you start going past that price point you hit diminishing returns pretty hard. You might have to upgrade your videocard at some point, but the rest of your computer will have a decent life span. I generally build a computer for about 1,200 and every couple of years I buy an ~$150 videocard. Not really too unreasonable I think. Certainly much cheaper than my car hobby :P.
It is definetly more expensive to game on a PC, but I find that the experience is more rewarding due to the player base being generally older and more mature. Not to say it isn't riddled with children, but the atmosphere is much different than consoles because of the price and sometimes he difficulty of getting a PC game to work at all... lol

I'm currently hooked on Mass Effect 3 (I'm in love with Femshepard) and SW:TOR! (Where I can also be Femshepard!).
Mass Effect 3 was great. I honestly never finished it because I got so hooked on the multiplayer that it kind of killed the single player for me.(heard it wasn't really worth the play through anyways). and SWTOR was a lot of fun. Easily one of the best MMOs I have played in a long time.
Has anybody played TERA? I feel like this is the best MMO out right now. The combat system is a lot of fun and definitely outside of the norm.
so your argument is that pc gaming is irrelevant because you can only do it if you can max out the settings? what a sad life you must lead.
i'm sorry, but a top-of-the-line pc purchased the same year as any gaming rig...is going to still offer viable gaming performance on new games--long after the console has choked on FPS. you might not be able to run x64 AA/AF in 2560x1600....but you'll still be able to run playable framerates at moderate resolution (especially if all you have to compete against is 720p).
I run a Q740 (intel i7) 1.73ghz, 6gb ram, and a radeon mobility 5870 on a 1080p laptop. now i don't know what crack y'all be smoking, but this thing runs everything i throw at it just fine--including postal 3 (probably the "newest" game i tossed at it recently; also STO). for the $1350 i paid (net after MIR) back in december 2010, i find it amusing that people insist that gaming pc's are so expensive. laptops are always more expensive than desktops--and this laptop was piss cheap.
i really don't get the people who swear off pc's as a money pit.
1. you own a 3/s....are you a moneypit hypocrite?
2. just because you can't play with an 8MP rendered picture doesn't mean that pc gaming sucks.
3. i'm fairly certain that any pc with integrated graphics (including a kindle fire) can probably out-render any of the existing console generation at this point. 720p is a pathetically low resolution in the 2012. 1024x768 was a resolution i was gaming at back in 2001--and that's got a higher pixel count than 720p.
4. when you factor in the cost of your "live" subscription, the premium you almost always end up paying for console games (vs. pc games, especially from steam), the inability to get much community-created content, and the cost of peripherals & all the other junk you usually need to game on a console--you're really not saving any money.

I'll agree with that. My current system is archaic by most standards. Built the core system 5 years ago. Upgraded the video card once, and changed from 7200rpm drive, to 10K rpm drive, to SSD for OS and 10K RAID-0 for Steam. I spent about $1200 when I built it. It still handles most anything I throw at it, though the moment I can find another $1200 or so laying around I'm doing an overhaul. I'm WAY overdue. This entire "buying a house and being a family man" thing is BRUTAL on my play money.

Incorrect! The story of Mass Effect 3 was amazing (except for the final 10-15 minutes which was still ok, but maybe a solid B+). Getting there is half the fun. You can also be plenty cold and ruthless if you want, because the galaxy is at war and we aint got time for no bs from no aliens! I let the galaxy burn!

I thoroughly enjoyed DX:HR. It was the sequel/prequel that the original deserved, none of that "Invisible War" stuff. The original is one of my favorites of all time. There were a few things that I didn't really like about how they went about doing things (or not doing things) but overall very worth it, I'd highly recommend. It generally raised questions in the same manner that the original did.
I'm also still playing a lot of SC2 & really looking forward to HOTS
Terran account: Sketch #427 (normally would be my main, but....)
Protoss account: PaulDenton #509 (yes, I really liked the original Deus Ex)
Until Queens get nerfed you'll probably find me playing a lot more Protoss than Terran (scumbag Blizzard. Buffs queens to fix ZvZ, completely break TvZ and PvZ in the process. Sit's back and watches the carnage)
I'm also keeping my eyes on the Steam sales, there's some really good stuff popping up there. Probably will start a Max Payne 3 playthrough soon.
I'm not going to post my Steam ID as my account is so old that the ID is an ancient email address that I'd prefer not to make publicly available, but PM me or post your ID (if you're comfortable with that) and I can add you =]

The consoles don't play anything at 1080p. The max resolution they run is 720p and upscale it to 1080 and a max of 30fps (at least as far as the last time I looked at anything with them). The hardware in the console is simply not capable of playing anything decent if it actually rendered 1080.
I disagree. My projector tells me what the feed quality is, and there are plenty of PS3 games that show up as 1080P. Bluray is 1080P, so there's not a hardware limitation for a game to play in 1080P as well.

I really enjoyed DX:HR. It wasn't revolutionary or anything special really, but it was a solid game with an interesting story that kept me wanting to play. It was also beautiful to look at. Id say Max Payne fell under that same category except Max Payne was obviously an entirely different type of fun. Both of those games were some of my favorite shooter single player campaigns I have done in a while.

...And more I'm forgetting or don't see immediately on my Steam list. I've got to the point that mainstream titles really don't entertain me any longer as they are all the same thing over and over. Just more of the same COD clones or other 3rd person shooter types. There seems to be a lot more creativity coming out in the indie scene, and with the Humble Bundle and Indie Royale "name your price" schemes when they offer them, it's nigh impossible to say no to these. Yeah, some a junk, but I would rather waste $4 on a game and it be bad than $50.

NCSoft has been involved since the beginning. They are shutting it down because "the continued support of the franchise no longer fits within our long term goals for the company,". Many are assuming its because NCSoft does not understand the game(it never did well in Korea where NCSoft is based) and does not want it as completion for the other MMO's it has.
