Not all engineers were created equally? I would think just about anyone in engineering would get it, but perhaps only those in computer fields would get it right away. In high school and in college I had to do base conversions, so it was pretty obvious to me.

Well, there are a couple reasons a programmer needs to know. I am only a hobby programmer, didn't finish my schooling, but....

Knowing binary can help with bit shifting operations to make faster computations and simpler code.
Base 16, because just about everything is in Base 16. 1 byte = 8 bits = 00-FF = 0-255.

When dealing with color codes, bit shifting, and other conversions, it could be useful. So essentially computers use Binary only, but a lot of binary (bits) gets grouped together into Hex (Base 16/bytes). Only people use base 10, because we have 10 fingers.

It is possible, in a nutshell, the way that the mass is distributed on the forks and how they're arranged on the penny drastically alters the center of gravity of the penny+forks and basically moves it to where the penny meets the glass so that if put in precisely the right location and balanced properly it will sit there. Any small shift or bump would cause it to come falling down.

If you use the quadratic formula (-b plus/minus the square root of b^2 - 4ac all over 2a) you end up with (-0 +/- sqrt (0^2 - 4(1)(3))) / 2(1) Or in otherwords the square root of -12 all over 2. You can't have a negative square root. Best you could do would be to break it down into imaginary numbers (2i * sqrt3)/2 which would give i*sqrt3.
You can't just multiply it times its roots because there's no way to split that into 2 parts without introducing a 3rd. Example of improper application for sqrt of x^2 + 3 would give (x+sqrt3)*(x+sqrt3) except that when multiplied back out, you'd end up with x^2 + (2x*sqrt3) + 3. You can't split the x^2 +3 into a (x+sqrt3)(x-sqrt3) because you'd end up with x^2 - 3.
You can't solve for x^2 +3 = 0 without breaking the rules. You end up with X^2 = -3 and a squared factor cannot possibly equal a negative (any x^2 will be positive no matter the value of x with the exception of 0.)

Maybe I'm retarded then. I multiplied both sides by (x^2 + 3). I thought I got x=1, but let me see, maybe I forgot an X.

x^3 - x^2 + x = 1
x^2 - x + 1 = 1/x
x^2 - x = 1/x - 1
x^2 = x + 1/x - 1
x^2 + 1 = x + 1/x

at this point, I literally have the same thing on both sides of the equation, and my brain frickin hurts. And it's taken me way longer to get this far than it should. I'm rather embarrassed about that. I can't figure out how to simplify it further (I think I goofed last time), but it still looks like X = 1, because there are no other numbers for which this will compute.

f(x) is a whole statement that stands for y when graphed, but it isn't function times (x), that is to say: f(x) = y, not f(x)=y(x). So you don't get x(x^2+3).

If you tried to graph it (plug it into a graphing calculator) you'll see that the equation only touches the X axis at -1. The best you could say would be that 1 root of (x^2 +2x+1)/(x^2+3) is equal to -1, and that the limit of the equation is x=1.

You get the root from the factoring (roots of the top are both -1) and when plugged into the equation you get 1-2+1/1+3...Or to put it better: 0/4. 0 in the numerator means that the whole thing equals zero, and thus is a root the equation as a whole.

Algebra is one of those things that if you don't use it frequently you forget how it works.

I mean, I grew up liking 80's BMX bikes, but my GOD they were pieces of garbage. 25 years has dramatically improved the durability, weight, performance, versatility & handling of BMX bikes.

Nostalgia doesn't really factor into things for me. ;)

Running the highway was brutal and noisy, and fetched me 7 mpg, once.

What was really nuts was I actually thought the gears were a concession to drivability; I had a set of 5:13s on the shelf...:rolleyes:

I had a Schneider hydraulic cam that was ground for the application. (my boss at the time was big into fast boats, and had them on speed dial...) 850 double pumper, Torker manifold, (Those old BBC torkers that turned the carb sideways were the shit back then... LOL ) 4:88 gears, and a switch-pitch TH400. (electrical switch on the shifter would switch it between 1900 or 3000 RPM stall...) All stuffed in a ratty looking 64 Chevelle SS.

I always hear people claim that the price of gas isn't much different today when adjusted for inflation... I"d like those idiots to explain one small detail to me. When I was 14-16 years old working in gas stations for minimum wage or slightly over, (don't remember specifics, but I believe around $3.50ish) I could buy 6-7 gallons of fuel for one hour of my gross pay... Do the math on that today....

Part (not all) of that is due to the value of minimum wage, versus inflation.

I was a few years later, I was paying 55-60 cents. I don't think you would have been very happy with the 5:13s unless you had some really tall street tires. My G60s with 4:88s had me almost floating the valves up top. I think that motor lived at 7200 RPM most days...

I always hear people claim that the price of gas isn't much different today when adjusted for inflation... I"d like those idiots to explain one small detail to me. When I was 14-16 years old working in gas stations for minimum wage or slightly over, (don't remember specifics, but I believe around $3.50ish) I could buy 6-7 gallons of fuel for one hour of my gross pay... Do the math on that today....


I was even a bit later at ~75 cents with a 750 double pumper and M21 4 speed, off-shelf PAW cam (whatever happened to them) and the same dam torker square port manifold...which I still have on the shelf to this day :D

Looks like Kiev's highest altitude is about 180m above sea level. Not nearly high enough.

The highest peak in the Ukraine is 6762' above sea level so at best, with the latest and great MANPADS out there, they would barely be scraping FL200. I don' think Russia would have anything to gain, but what did they have to gain when they shot down KAL007? Whoever did it, probably confused it with a Ukrainian military transport. And again, this is all predicated on the assumption that it was indeed shot down.

I'd heard that one of the separatists in Ukraine had boasted about shooting down a transport on his twitter account...then subsequently deleted it.... I wont' get into the classified realm, but yes, all but the most modern manpads aren't going to hit 30,000 without some serious help.

I agree. People bitch about the pension, but then you realize that for your average military retiree, that's MAYBE 2 grand per month--and the percentage of servicemembers who actually make it to retirement is a SMALL fraction of tht total number who serve. Frankly, I don't think "early" retirement after 20 years is unjustified...especially with the bass-ackwards mindest about our military shoving people to the door left and right.

In many European countries, full military pension comes at age 55. Unless you're an outright fuck-up, you stay doing your job until you hit 55 and then you're done. Makes sense to me. Keeps the knowledgeable people in their jobs, cuts down on retirement pensions, none of the "ripping my hair out wondering if i'll get promoted or hit HYT first" bullshit.

Unfortunately, I see the US military being run more and more like a business. The almighty dollar is more important than the quality being retained & trained, readiness, and retention. Hell, the only reason military pay has been on a bonus-freeze and annual pay raises are at a virtual standstill--is because our wonderful government has tanked the economy; so pretty much everyone in the military is stuck with the nagging notion that their prospects on the outside are VERY poor in many cases. Of course, that means more people want to stay in--and the military just keeps shoving people to the door.

I swear to god our military is seriously fucked up on the bureaucratic end. I keep telling myself "support and defend the constitution of the united states of america"...and that is the only means I seem to have left to stomach what I do and what I've become: a mercenary.
