And although I do pay slightly higher charges for use outside of Germany, I don't pay roaming or anything like that.

When I came back stateside for 2 months, I ended up paying more for a POS "pre-paid" AT&T junker than I had for my German cell in the past 6 months combined. And that was a $19 phone.

Not to mention I can tether if I want to, and there would be another $50 a month gone from my ISP, bringing it down to $65/mo, or $32.50 each.

For people that don't use their phone much, like you, yeah that's a good plan. It just doesn't really fit with the average use of an American.

Small correction. There are several true pay as you use plans in the US. T-Mobile has a one as low as 10c per minute.

I did a site for Best buy a few years ago specifically for adding funds to this type of phone.

It would be perfect for my grandmother who only has a cell phone for emergency. The Straight talk, and Obama, phones work real similar. You load it up, and what you put on it is yours until you use it up. Doesn't expire or require a recurring monthly charge.

Not sure of the availability overseas, but google voice gives you free messaging and calls, providing you have internet.
I've been using it for a couple years now. No picture messaging, but I don't use that bs anyway.
I could literally have no cell phone at all and not miss out on anything but calling and texting while driving, which is probably for the better.

Also... text messages and email's are the same thing. You don't pay per e-mail, so you shouldn't be paying per text.

You can take that cheap POS phone and buy an At&t or T mobile sim card and buy minutes if you so desire. They don't advertise because they can make more money off contracts and the majority of people would rather no worry about adding minutes to their phones. When I was overseas I did the same thing as you, but I was spending about $40 a month on calls back to the states. $45 for unlimited data,calls, and texts is probably as good as it gets.

Actually, in northern Europe (Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, etc), people drive pretty damn well. Even in Greece, you have to respect the driving skills. It's assholes to elbows there, and I'm shocked by the guys who can pilot buses & semis there. Streets are precariously narrow in Athens. The driving is an aggressive style, but people know how to drive--even with mopeds & such constantly--and legally--driving between the lanes.

^ So this one time, I was returning from a deployment on a chartered flight. That's right, not a commercial flight, a commercial plane that was hired to transport ONLY MILITARY PEOPLE back to the states. There are no metal detectors, frisks or bomb-sniffing dogs on our way out of "the sandbox". I happen to be carrying a small pocket-knife in one of my pockets.

Everything is fine until we get back to the USA, and we go through customs (I don't remember where, but I'll say it was Jersey, because I fucking hate Jersey...and we'd been through there at least a couple times). So we'd already been flying for the better part of 15 hours or so...just to get to this airport, and I'd been "armed" the whole time. Well now I have to go through a metal detector, and they "catch" me with a knife on me. I calmly explain that I'd been flying with it for 15 hours already, and furthermore--being a military member on a military only flight--why in god's forsaken name would I possess intent to harm anyone or hijack the plane--ON A TRIP THAT IS RETURNING FROM DEPLOYMENT. They don't care about that. Nor do they care that--also as I'd explained--I could have left my knife in the seat-back in front of my seat--and no one would have noticed, cared, or said anything.

So the TSA confiscated my knife. 'murica.
