The f-cking things go for $8,815 new today. Small engine, ultra-basic, very poor in terms of creature comforts, but quite capable off road, reliable and easy to work on. Like the CJ Jeeps, it ain't a leather equipped Explorer, but it's hard to stop.

Top Gear actually did a review of one a few years ago, but their anti-Russian bias is almost as bad as their anti-American bias. They bought the cheapest base version (without limited slips on either end, and with crappy road tires), drove it through 3' deep mud, got it stuck, and declared that it was "commie rubbish" that was inferior to all the European SUVs. < eye roll > These are the same guys that declared the C6 z06 an undrivable piece of sh-t because the stock tires make a lot of road-noise, I still love the show, but fair isn't part of the gig.

I've done that so many times. Really bad idea to hang on and make it rebound...especially when it recoils right into your nuts. Learned my lesson quick on that one. Broke two poles, but luckily never got impaled or even hurt...other than my lower back is now a mess.

Potemkin villages or Potyomkin villages (Russian: Потёмкинские деревни) is an idiom based on a historical myth. According to the myth, there were fake settlements purportedly erected at the direction of Russian minister Grigory Potyomkin to fool Empress Catherine II during her visit to Crimea in 1787. According to this story, Potyomkin, who led the Crimean military campaign, had hollow facades of villages constructed along the desolate banks of the Dnieper River in order to impress the monarch and her travel party with the value of her new conquests, thus enhancing his standing in the empress' eyes.

"Potemkin village" has also frequently been used to describe the attempts of the Soviet government to fool foreign visitors. The government would take such visitors, who were often already sympathetic to socialism or communism, to select villages, factories, schools, stores, or neighborhoods and present them as if they were typical, rather than exceptional.

Good God. I am a huge nerd and have a particularly large repository of useless or obscure historic knowledge in my head and even I didn't get this one. I knew of the practice by the Soviets, my parents actually spent time in such a fake village*, but never knew it by name. Your nerdiness must be epic!


* It was for some international Aerospace conference, and they were not fooled at all by the Potemkin Village. It was obvious as heck that the Soviet government had "borrowed" the best furniture and bathroom fixtures from neighboring villagers and tried to build the "conference facility" overnight. None of the stuff matched, even the bathroom fixtures were mismatched color and style wise.

They have some crazy stories from the trip too. One time the entire group was rounded up and got bussed two hours in the bitch black wilderness to some location that turned out to be Eastern Poland for what turned out to be a traditional Polish feast of some kind. The problem is, nobody bothered telling any of the visitors this, and being that everyone was an Aerospace expert, they were SURE they were being kidnapped. The Soviets also refused to let my parents leave early when my Mom got sick. Their visa said the trip was for X number of days, so they had to stay for exactly X many days, period! "If sick, visit Soviet Hospital" they said. Also they failed to heed the advice of my Dad's colleagues and bring American toilet-paper; bad idea! My Mom also got yelled at by the pilot of Aeroflot flight to Moscow when she had the balls to jokingly ask the pilot "Aeroflot boom?" with hand gesture of a crashing plane (she didn't know any Russian, but it was pretty obvious what she meant), he was not amused at all and started screaming at her in Russian, but also repeating "Aeroflot NO boom, NO boom!" a few times for her benefit. In her defense, the plane looked ancient and there were caged chickens in the passenger compartments. Crazy experience. One I'd never care to have personally.

BTW, this poster and the caption reminds me of a particular sighting in college. I was working out at the Student Rec Center (Gym) and one of the most gorgeous women I've ever seen in person walks in and begins working out.
Brunette, about 5'6" - 5'7", beautiful face with ice blue eyes and a body straight off a Marvel comic book heroine. Looked like she had natural C's and a great ass and what I particularly like, a blend of feminine curves with the curves of muscle. OK, I admit, I love the fitness model look (not the wannabe-male bodybuilder look).

All the guys in sight were watching her workout. I admit, I was stunned by the sight for a bit, then continued with my own workout. Shortly thereafter though, some random guy I didn't know walks up to me and says really quietly, "Man that sucks, I just got done doing one-arm rows with the same weight she's using! That's some bullshit". I had to laugh. It was only 40-45lbs but I guess it could be a little intimidating for a guy to see a beautiful girl using the same weights he uses for the same exercise. I didn't have the heart to point out that it was only her 2nd set so she was probably still working up weight wise.
