What do you guys think? I wanted to get some with my car, but the car was dirty today. Next time I'll include car pics :)

All shot with a Sony A580 + 70-200mm f2.8 G + HVL-F42AM Flash with Gary Fong Lightsphere

Looks good Lance! I just got a Canon T3i setup and I'm learning :)

OT - Are you going to make the NorCal August meet?

Me too! I got mine last November for my birthday.

Nice shots, Lancelot. I need to get a new lens as well. The stock one on my T3i is good but I'd like to have more lens options so I can play with the F# and DOF based on what shots I'm taking.

Yeah I should be able to make the meet, but it really depends on what my schedule is like by that time. I was bummed that I missed last year's meet because I was in Italy

Get a 50mm f1.8 if you don't have a big budget. Only costs about $150 normally, $120 when on sale, and has been a super handy lens for portraits, car photos, and some close up stuff where you want a shallow depth of field. These were taken using such lens

The "plastic fantastic"! That's the one I've been looking at! Good to know I'm on the right track.

I'm REALLY just learning. Had to read some wiki to understand what the 50mm does for you. Maybe I'll ask for one for my B Day. Right now I have the 18-55 and 55-250 IS lenses.

After reading it looks like the big trade is between the f/1.8 and f/1.4 lenses. I have the budget for the 1.4 so maybe I'll ask for that one.

For most people, you will see little difference, and unless you plan to go Full Frame in the future, the extra money is better spent on additional accessories, such as flash, filters, etc.

To elaborate on what I mean by this, you end up spending three times the price and it really doesn't look like three times the picture quality. You have pretty steep diminishing returns with that lens, unless you're going full frame. For the extra couple hundred dollars saved, you could get a Speedlite 430EX and a knock-off omnibounce diffuser and get much more satisfying results from all your images, especially indoors and at night.

Fortunately a bit less than the Nikon and Canon versions because I'm a Sony guy, but it still set me back the price of a cheap used car haha

It really does. My next one will be a 10-24 mm ultra wide angle, I plan to get some really awesome car shots with that lens :)
