View Full Version : Drivetrain Opinions on strange clutch issue...

Just curious if anyone has seen this...
I've been having a "clunk" when I shift or push the clutch in and release. Unless I'm smooth with it it's perfectly fine...
I just looked into it and my clutch fluid looks like hell, pure black, and it's been bled recently. So, I bled it again, that's when I noticed that after the clutch has been depressed, I can push the slave cylinder in by hand putting slack between the pin and the clutch fork... So that's what's causing my clunk, but what's causing it to have no pressure against the clutch fork when depressed? I'm having a hard time finding and leak and the reservoir remains full! It shifts fine and the slave can push and hold the fork open. Thoughts?

If you're not losing fluid, it sounds like you still have air in the system somewhere. I'd start by bleeding the hell out of it again.

Remember there are 2 bleed points. One on the unit just near the trans mount.

If I saw pure black fluid I would absolutely pull both the master and slave and rebuild them, put it all back together and bleed it thoroughly.

The play at the slave is normal operation and is desired so the clutch adjusts itself
Look under the dash and make sure all the bolts in the pedal assembly are tight.

Last night I pulled it into the garage again, and gave it a really good bleed. I ran a good 8oz through it till the fluid was a beautiful clear color. I actually have a JDM slave but I removed all the dampner stuff, so I just have the one bleed screw.
One thing I noticed is when I adjust the clutch pedal to .5" movement, the slave pin rests against the clutch fork nicely, but the clutch doesn't engage till half way up off the floor. If I drive it like this and don't put the clutch pedal all the way down (just enough to enage it) it's smooth. If I push the clutch to the floor and shift it clunks hard. It's almost as if there's too much gap between the clutch and pressure plate?
I'm going to play with the adjustment under the dash a bit more.
Thanks for the input.

I had an issue with a DSM sort of like this. It wasn't a loud clunk though, it was a little quieter. But what ended up happening is when the clutch got all the way to the floor it would push the TOB so far on the shaft towards the pressure plate that it would catch on a little lip on the shaft, and it would make a snap sound when I let off the clutch. Maybe you are having a similar issue.

Yeah pretty close... How did you fix it? Hope I don't have to pull the tranny again, done it twice already, it's a bitch of a job.

I want to say for that particular issue I just adjusted the clutch pedal. That way it would go down far enough to disengage the clutch but not to where it would cause the TOB to stick like it was.
