The ORIGINAL VR4 Clone™ ECU!!!
I am proud to offer the VR4 Clone™ ECU!!!!
This was started way back in late 2009 when we first discovered that there are flashable ECUs out there.
With lots of work from the likes of Gatecrasher and Ceddy from the EVO community, the reverse engineering began. Since then I have been modifying and testing ECUs in the hopes to offer a SOLID VR4 Replacement ECU. And others such as Monochrome (aka Greg E) have taken up the task of completing a viable ROM to replace the stock ROM.
After a long time in testing to ensure that this is a 100% COMPLETE VR4 ECU, I am proud to offer the VR4 Clone™ ECU!
These are professionally remanufactured ECUs that have gone through an extensive process:
First every incoming ECU is tested to ensure that it is working.
http://ecu.upstageproductionsinc.org/images/test_01.jpg
Then the ECU has the conformal coating completely stripped with an approved conformal coating stripper, not brake cleaner, acetone, or alcohol.
The proper selection of a conformal coating stripper is CRITICAL to prevent damage to the printed wiring board substrates or other components.
Then the ECU is examined under 10x power for surface contaminations, corrosion, and dendrites! Far too often on Mitsubishi ECUs, I have encountered extensive corrosion, dendrite growth & flux residues from flux that is not fully activated. Additionally, extensive flux residue can be found on almost ALL Mitsubishi ECUs. This can and will cause problems over time if not properly removed and reworked.
Here is an example of flux residue that has crept under the conformal coating and caused massive amounts of corrosion:
http://ecu.upstageproductionsinc.org/images/corrosion_01.jpg
Here is a close up of corrosion on an injector driver final drive circuit. This is all sorts of bad!
http://ecu.upstageproductionsinc.org/images/corrosion_04.jpg
And even more corrosion pictures:
Corrosion 02 (http://ecu.upstageproductionsinc.org/images/corrosion_02.jpg)
Corrosion 03 (http://ecu.upstageproductionsinc.org/images/corrosion_03.jpg)
Corrosion 05 (http://ecu.upstageproductionsinc.org/images/corrosion_05.jpg)
Typically corrosion looks as if there is a discoloration in the conformal coating, sometimes white, sometimes rust colored. Additionally, the conformal coating can have particles trapped in it along with the flux residue. This is because of improper washing at the factory.
Dendrites are caused by the moisture trapped in the flux and wicking under the conformal coating. The moisture dissolves small particles of metal into a solution of metal ions which then are redistributed by electro migration in the presence of an electromagnetic field, i.e. electric current. After time, these small dendrites can and sometimes do turn into full blown corrosion.
For more information on dendrites and corrosion, you can check out the Foresite (http://www.residues.com/picture_library.html) website.
After the ECU is examined and any rework that is required is performed, the ECU is converted to the VR4 Specification. During this process, parts are removed and parts are inserted depending on the circuit.
Only BRAND NEW parts are used!
We do not use parts that are scrapped off of other ECUs for this process.

http://ecu.upstageproductionsinc.org/images/cpu_01.jpg
The one and only capacitor, which is WAY beyond its design life of 2000 hours, is replaced BEFORE it can leak and damage the ECU. If you drove your car 1 hour a day, five days a week, 50 weeks a year (assuming you park it for vacation two weeks a year) your engine is running 250 hours a year. Considering that the 1999 is now 13 years old, thats 3250 hours! For most daily drivers, this is very underestimated!
Correction 05/25/2012
Mitsubishi used a Nichicon General Purpose 47 µF 50 V (180mA Ripple) Surface Mount Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor. This part has a design life of 2000 hours continuous use at 105°C. This temperature can easily be obtained internally to the capacitor by a continuous ripple current greater than 180mA. This results in "soft doming" or "bulging" of the top of the capacitor which is an indicator of a pending failure. For more information on capacitor failures, you can check out the Consoles5 Wiki. (http://console5.com/wiki/Identifying_Bad_Capacitors)
Additionally, an additional capacitor is added to help protect against voltage and current ripple. This additional capacitor normally exists only on the DOHC SL ECU to help combat the extra current draw of the variable intake plenum actuators.
The finished product goes through even more electrical testing and is certified to be a 100%VR4 ECU!
http://ecu.upstageproductionsinc.org/images/test_02.jpg
Once final testing is done, the ECU is cleaned of all flux residues and re-conformal coated. The ECU is the re-packaged in an appropriate case and labeled with a part number and a warranty seal.

http://ecu.upstageproductionsinc.org/images/1998_01.jpghttp://ecu.upstageproductionsinc.org/images/1999_01.jpg
Lastly the stock Mitsubishi ROM is flashed to the ECU before delivery.
All ECUs are covered by our extensive 1 yr Clone Warranty (http://ecu.upstageproductionsinc.org/files/Clone%20Warranty%20Agreement.pdf).

FAQ
What do I need to flash tune?
You need a harness adapter.
You will need an appropriate ECU.
You will need a Tactrix 2.0 cable. Version 1.3 WILL NOT WORK.
You will need a copy of ECUFlash.
You will need a copy of EVOScan.
You will need a laptop (or other car computer) to run the software on and flash your ECU from.
I already bought an adapter harness from you. Can I still get the ECU for the package price?
YES YOU CAN! As long as you use the same PayPal account as you did when you bought the harness, I will give you the same package discount. Just PM me and I will shoot you a price!
Does this come with the brackets to just bolt in?
Unfortunately, No. Even though this is GUARANTEED TO BE 100% VR4, we are talking about the electronics inside, not the outside case. Even a Ralli Art EVO ECU only comes with the black plastic shell and no metal brackets.
Every METAL housed ECU will come with a bracket-less metal case.
Every PLASTIC housed ECU will come without the metal bracket.
Which ECU's do you modify?
The list of ECUs that are modified is really not important. In reality there are 10 or 12 ECUs that are candidates for this process. The only thing that we look for is that the same revision of Printed Circuit Board is used in the ECU. From there the final product is GUARANTEED TO BE 100% VR4!!
What are the differences between a 1998 and 1999 ECU?
There are very little differences in the 1998 vs. 1999 version of the ECU. Technically, besides the case (metal vs. plastic), the 1999 ECU is missing some developmental programming circuitry which allows direct access to the CPU independent of the OBDII port. Also the 1999 ECU has additional line level resistors on the inputs to the CPU to help safeguard against someone applying voltage to a signal pin so that you don't burn out the CPU.
Can I specify a metal or plastic case or a 1998 or 1999 ECU?
If someone REALLY wants a 1999 plastic case or a 1998 metal cased ECU, then there will be an additional $25 charge.
Do you offer options like some others?
No there are no options. In reality, because these are GUARANTEED TO BE 100% VR4, there is no need to offer options.
Is there anything that will not work?
Again, since this is GUARANTEED TO BE 100% VR4, everything from the fuel tank pressure differential sensor, to the EVAP Purge and EVAP Vent will work IF you have the sensors and solenoids to support them. This is a 100% ELECTRICAL CLONE of a 1998 or 1999 3000GT VR4 ECU! In fact if you pop open the case, you would not be able to differentiate that this started out as a something other than a VR4 ECU.
Will you modify my ECU or can I send in a core?
At this time, we are not taking "cores" nor are we modifying a customer’s ECU. The problem lies in the fact that we cannot guarantee that condition of the ECU before we get it if it is customer supplied. We purchase all of our ECUs from a nationwide core warehouse so that we can guarantee the quality of the ECU.
Will you pre-flash another ROM for me?
At this time I am only flashing the stock ROM to the ECU. I do, however, recommend that you talk to Monochrome (aka Greg E) about his Chrome ROM.
Chrome your Clone!
How can you be the original when someone else is already selling these?
The reverse engineering process started back in 2009 when I first met with Ceddy and started working with Gatecrasher on the XML files. Then in Early 2010 I started the process with the ECUs and it was not long after that several of my engineering samples were in vehicles around St Louis being tested. By late 2011 almost all of the components had been identified and by Feb 2012 full VR4 ECUs were being manufactured and stockpiled waiting for this launch date! Just as with any other top notch manufacturer, I refused to release beta units to the public.
Out of curiosity, what are the specifications and life expectancy of the newly installed capacitors?
UPDATED 05/25/2012
Panasonic V Series TG Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor. Rated at 47 µF 50 V (221 mA Ripple) and 2000 hours at 125°C. Life in the operational environment is dictated by the Law of Arrhenius, which dictates that the capacitor life is a function of temperature and DC voltage. As a rule of thumb, the life doubles for each 10°C lower operating temperature.
When deciding on a replacement capacitor, many factors had to be taken into account including the ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) and the impedance. Additionally there was a limitation on the physical size of the capacitor.

Will it run high impedance/saturation injectors? I have a set of Injector Dynamics ID725 injectors that took a long time to locate at the right price lol.
Hmmmmmm..... The DOHC ECU ran HIGH impedance injectors. The VR4 ran LOW impedance injectors. The main difference was that Mitsubishi added the injector resistor pack in line with the injectors. Additionally, according to the manual, the engine cranking drive times are different between the HIGH impedance (36.1-54.1 ms @ 20°C) and the LOW impedance (23.3-34.9 ms @ 20°C) and the engine running drive times are different between the HIGH impedance (2.2-3.4 ms @ 20°C, ECT 80-95 °C, 2,500 RPM) and the LOW impedance (1.5-2.7 ms @ 20°C, ECT 80-95 °C, 2,500 RPM). There is also a note about when the vehicle is new (less than 500 miles) that the injector drive times might be 10% higher. This is obviously related to fuel trims.
Greg, can you provide some input here as to whether or not this can be handled in a flash table?

I will add this to the FAQ as well . . .
Panasonic V Series HB High Temp Reflow Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor Part Number EEE-HBH470YAP (http://industrial.panasonic.com/www-cgi/jvcr13pz.cgi?E+PZ+3+ABA0117+EEEHBH470YAP+7+WW). Rated at 47 µF 50 V (63mA Ripple) and 2000 hours at 105°C. Because there are two of them in the circuit now, the life span should actually be longer.
When deciding on a replacement capacitor, many factors had to be taken into account including the ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) and the impedance. Additionally there was a limitation on the physical size of the capacitor.
As a 30 year career HW designer I'm very familiar with the factors that you've considered including how to specify electrolytic capacitors. It's clear to me that you are offering a solution as professional as could possibly be done by anyone including the original manufacturer. Great job :bigthumb:

I will look into it and see if I can find someone local willing to tune it. Not up to that sort of thing yet. If it can be done with tools I'm all over it LOL..... but tuning is over my head.

Shoot me a quote, i have the fipk, so if you have an adapter for that, great. If not I will make one. Maybe a pic of the adapter.
99 vr4
05-30-2012, 03:26 PM
Pic will have to wait until I am home. Its the actual k&n oval adapter. Same adapter fits our maf and the 482. I swapped mine with no problem. The 482 is shorter so you will have to change the bracket.. I took the end bracket that came with my fipk that goes to the bolt on the end of the fipk, put a small twist in it, and attached it to the lower left bolt from the maf and adapter and the other end attaches to one of the bolt holes from the stock air filter box. I will have to send a pic. If you don't have this you will need to make it.. But it is real easy, just a piece of flat steel with two bolt holes.
The only thing you need to make its the adapter from the bubble pipe to the 482. Adam has a thread on it.. Real easy.

The Tactrix device has the 2.5mm stereo aux female jack for flashing/power, and the harness has a 2.5mm stereo femal jack on the green wire. I'm guessing we need to get a 2.5mm male to male extension cable to connect the two together?

Yuppers... when I ordered my tactrix, it came with an extension 2.5mm stereo male to male cable. But if you dont order the mitsu reflash connector it does not come with that cable.
I will be making 8" male to male cables.. I just ordered the parts yesterday.
I think BlackStealth uses a 2.5mm male plug, but there is voltage present on the reflash pin when the ecu has power applied. A short could fry the ecu.

Ok, I did not order the Mitsu reflash connector, as no one ever posted anywhere that it was needed. And $11 more just to get a male to male cable seems like a lot. :) Making one should be easy enough, just connect the center pins together on both male plugs, right? Maybe add a switch to open/close that connection if you don't need that power to the Tactrix.

Cool, thanks! No hurry, I still have a TON of engine/tranny/clutch/ABS/AWS/rear diff work to be done before the car is running again and I'm ready to play with the new ECU. Car will be awesome when its all done, but the longer it takes, the more stuff I find to buy to put on, lol.

I was noticing the harness I got (95 fed spec) had about 15 or 16 pins that didn't go to anywhere on the 99 vr4 ecu. Are those features that did not carry over to the 3rd gen like Active Aero and ECS?

You are correct. And there are pins that are just unused on the ECU. BTW, I am just waiting to road test your ECU and then it is ready to ship!

That's a shame. Do you know if the ECU actually controls the active aero, every wiring diagram I could find didn't say anything about that. Just the muffler mode change? I was rather enjoying mine working, but it's a manageable compromise for the advantages gained.
*EDIT* Is that an independent system with the active aero control Unit.

Yep. Your AA should still work even with the flash ECU. :)
You'll need to wire the dash switch to pin 75 and the active exhaust controller to pin 7 of the flash ECU.

The active exhuast, the active aero, the suspension system, the lighting control, the air bag, and the remotes are all independent functions. The ECU only gets notified when the active exhaust is turned on for fuel tuning.

This is very interesting to me. My active exhaust doesnt work, but the switch does. Does the ECU look to the switch or to a limit switch on the motor? And is there much to gain by the ECU knowing the exhaust is free flowing?

And if it is on the switch is there any way we can take advantage of it for other purposes programatically?

OK, this active exhaust affecting the fuel map discussion needs to be discussed please. I have removed all but the motor, and wonder if this affect my performance via the switch still. If I remove the motor, or unplug, what affect if any does this have, and what is needed to disabled said affect?
If this needs to go in the Chrome thread, let me know I will move it...

This applies only to those using the stock ROM.
If you no longer have an active exhaust system, then don't worry about it. Just don't play with the switch.
If you still have a working active exhaust system, then after you are done tuning, check your tune with the active exhaust on. Don't tune with the active exhaust on.
If you are using Chrome, check with Greg.
There are still some unknowns with regards to this system....

I was recently asked if I can modify a customer supplied ECU.
I typically don't modify other peoples ECU's because some times they dont work... I have gotten a few bad ones already... And unfortunately you can't check it out 100% until after it is modified.
Then when it is bad, your out the money and you still don't have an ECU.. And the original seller won't refund the money once someone else has worked on the ECU.
So it is just bad business practice to put yourself in that position.
That is why I don't modify customer supplied ECU's. I have thought about giving core credit, but have not come up with a figure. With a core credit you won't get the ECU that is supplied back, but it will be thrown into the core pile.
If some one has an ECU already, and wants a core credit, PM me with the ECU part number and I will shoot you a core credit amount.

Okay I should put this issue to rest now that I got a better understanding of how its tied in:
*Active exhaust ONLY effects ECU controlled boost and nothing more
*The ecu registers the active exhaust in "sport mode" when pin 75 of the flashable ECU sees ground.
*Pin 7 on the flash ECU is the output for the Active Exhaust controller. (also ties to ground)

okay. I'm a bit confused..
I have a 91 Stealth RT Turbo 5 speed AWD and I would like to upgrade my 91' ECU to a flashable ECU.
I'm planing to upgrade/rebuild the 6G72T motor and would like to have a flashable ECU. however they are difficult to find.
Are you selling ECU's that just plug and play into the first gen cars?
If so, what would I need for a 91 stealth turbo?,

Only the 1998 and 1999 are flashable and the OEM Mitsubishi VR 4 flashable ECU for 1998 or 1999 is no longer available from Mitsubishi. (Not to mention they retailed well over $1,000!)
This is why you can't find one. Now even if you found one used, it is not plug and play as the ECU plugs are different.
What I make is a 100% Clone. It is a 100% Genuine Mitsubishi Flashable ECU which has been professionally re-manufactured into a VR4 ECU. This ECU is absolutely 100% plug-n-play on a 1998 or 1999 3000GT VR4 (North American Version)
No one else can make this claim. Every ECU is drive tested on a 1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 to ensure OBDII drive cycle completion. No one else can actually do that because of differences between the 1998/1999 version which makes it unique.
To adapt this ECU to any other year or the European or Japanese version, an adapter harness is required. This harnesses plugs into the ECU and has the appropriate sockets to plug into your factory harness.
The ECU and harness are available as a package on the ordering (http://tinyurl.com/c9uk8ma) site.
This is as close to 100% plug-n-play as you are going to get. There are some little differences that you have to address in the ECU code via ECUFlash because of some differences in how Mitsubishi handles things like EVAP purge, EGR sense, and even the number of O2 sensors among the years.

I had an opportunity to take some before/after pictures to show the quality of Brett’s work. Sample before picture of my self-modded test ecu:

Picture after Brett's work:

Now it looks cleaner than the factory populated board IMO (new conformal coating and all). Currently:

Thanks again for the super great pics! They came out GREAT! I am going to use some of them on the new redesigned website if you are ok with that.
Oh and the nice folks that actually make the pins for the harnessess just sent me 100 "samples" while I wait for my 7000 worth to come in via the slow boat from china! I have enough to float by until my order arrives.

I only skimmed this so it may have been answered, but what's the turn around time after ordering? Are these already built and ready to ship or built to order?
99 vr4
01-10-2013, 11:03 PM
It's a bit of both... LOL
I make four at a time and depending on order volume may have one or two ready to go. Worst case scenario if I don't have any built is that it takes 7 to 10 business days to ship your order. Normal turn around is 5 to 7 business days IF I need to make a harness. All harnesses are built to order.
I always have cores readily available and on order with my suppliers and I always have a reserve in case I need it for a warranty swap (so far that has not happened). I have only had to make a clone "to order" once. That was for boostaddict and that was because I was cloning his personal ecu. (see photos above)
I also have two OEM 98 VR4 ECUs in stock that I reconditioned complete with brackets right now but they cost a bit more.
Why do you ask?
