Funny, considering IE had 98% market share just a few years ago. Google now has the most popular browser, smartphone OS, and search engine. I bet Yahoo wishes they wouldn't have passed up the opportunity to buy Google before it blew up.
Chrome is the most popular browser in the world, says StatCounter | The Verge (http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/21/3033566/chrome-most-popular-browser-weekly-may-2012)

To be honest, I have a hard time believing this. I have only ever seen one person use chrome since it has been out. Workplaces usually are either IE or Firefox too.

They are looking at north american traffic only, which is way different than world wide. In china and india, bootleg windows XP is still king and computers never get upgraded from IE6.

Been using Chrome for awhile now, at work and at home.

meh, alexa says a bunch of bullshit like that too, but they are still wildly inaccurate.

Here is both sides of the debate on a much higher populated tech forum:
Google Chrome is now the most popular browser in the world. : technology (http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/tx9n1/google_chrome_is_now_the_most_popular_browser_in/)

Actually, come to think of it, I think Gmail is now the popular public/free email in the world. Wish I would've bought stock early on in Google.

They use IE where I work by default. Every coworker I know has downloaded Chrome though. Much more fluid and fast. My company is also currently working on switching our intranet to run on Chrome so we can ditch IE.

Somethings tells me that if Yahoo bought Google back then, Google would be no where near where it is today. Chrome would be some buggy, celeb-gossip spewing messenger app or something.

love chrome and will nmever go back unless they pull som gay facebook shit
sorry, but you'll have to pry firefox from my cold, dead hands.
i think the numbers here are skewed by two things:
1. as noted in the article, regions such as south america heavily skew the results.
2. MS has stopped being competitive in the mobile market, whereas google has taking a big jump in market-share.
either way though, i don't like the idea of having even MORE ads targeting me--and i don't like supporting hegemonic power. i use an MS OS, i use FF for browsing, and i use google for searching.
p.s.
Q: why did facebook go public?
A: even THEY could figure out the privacy settings.

exactly... its all bs.
Chrome is running around pre browsing all your favorites... thats not usage.
IE/Firefox/Chrome = pretty much the same speed, same sh*t... fanboi fights are funny but competition is great though.
The chrome fanbois used to say the same thing about Firefox... now they just spew the same bs about chrome.
I don't blame webmasters for getting ticked, they are having to feed bandwidth without even a hit. Thanks to google trying to be the fastest. They put that burden on the hosters.
ff still has far more versatility, and that's what i'm all about.

I have used chrome since day 1.
Every computer I use has chrome on it also.
I have never had a single problem with it. It is hand's down the best browser out there.

Where in my entire post did I mention anything about plug-in's?
I have 0 need for plug in's. Because my browser works the way I want it to. If I did have to choose a plug in, I would apply ad block.

Here are the stats for a site I manage. But then again, the tech level of the average person accessing this site is very low IMO.
1. Internet Explorer 49.95%
2. Firefox 17.42%
3. Safari 14.92%
4. Chrome 12.53%
5. Android Browser 2.36%
6. Mozilla Compatible Agent 1.35%
7. Mozilla 0.49%
8. Opera Mini 0.38%
9. Opera 0.27%
10. IE with Chrome Frame 0.19%

Chrome is useless for me. I click the top bars of windows to switch between windows and I end up switching tabs constantly using Chrome. Besides that annoyance, Chrome doesn't have the addons I use on a daily basis, nor does it have the customization that Firefox does (even excluding themes and addons, Firefox is way easier to tweak).
thirded. having addons for a browser is like crack...once you use them, you can't imagine going back. downloading an entire picture gallery with 2 clicks? check.
google pisses me off enough as it is. every third search i do on google is interrupted--mid type--by some BS popup window asking me if i want to save something.

Plus it gets annoying validating web software for chrome 99.1232424353434343 R2 that came out yesterday when I'm running 99.1232424353434342

However, this particular study includes a majority of last year and only 2 weeks of stats after the effects of prerendering were removed from StatCounter (week 28, 2011 - week 15, 2012) It's safe to say that this study is misleading and inaccurate.

Allowing google to know and record so much more about you ='s so much more money and data in their pocket and your privacy even more transparent.
i was reading today that another 3rd party tracker shows figures of 49% IE, 19% FF, 13-15% chrome--for the same period of time. skepticism the name of the game when i hear things like the thread title.

You're doing it wrong then. I use solely google to search and never, ever have gotten a pop up about saving anything.
