View Full Version : Drivetrain Is my power steering leak repairable?

I have a power steering leak that I pin pointed to a 5/16 hard line that connects at the bottom of the rack. It goes from one side of the rack the the other, both ends connecting into the racks body. I've had a hard time trying to flare in a new piece because of the awkward position of the ends with the rack in the car. Is this a high pressure line? I was wondering if it was safe to repair it with compression fittings or a piece of high pressure fuel hose? Thanks...

Yes you can fix it with copper line and compression fittings.

I had to do it in a pinch but I pretty much trust it as much as a new line.

I tried putting in a section of 5/16 line with some bubble flare fittings and a union but due to the awkward position I couldn't get my hand held flaring tool to make a clean flare causing the leak. I'll go grab some compression fittings this weekend and give it a try, thanks!

I wasn't able to find any compression fittings in town for 5/16 line. I re-did my flares and they seem to be holding (what a pain). I have since found another pin hole leak in the line, I don't know how I'm going to fix this one as it's in such an awkward position. :shake2:
