View Full Version : Just changed oil at 1000 miles on rebuild...sad day.

Well today I changed my oil on my 1000mile rebuild to some Brad Penn with a PureOne filter. I was hoping this would be the last super frequent oil change and now wait 3,000 miles until the next one.

Well....if anyone remembers this thread from the other site: http://www.3si.org/forum/f35/ticking-noise-video-inside-504212/

I'm pretty sure I discovered metallic flakes in my oil. The thing I hate most is that I used an oil drain pan from the school so I can't 100% certain it was clean...but really, how often do metallic flakes show up during an oil change anyways? I doubt our formula car or baja car are spinning bearings. Soo.....I'm done for the season until I can find time and a place to work on the car. As it is right now, its in an enclosed trailer here at school and I have no shop to work on it.

Edit: So here is my new plan of attack. Drop the pan eventually to discover bad bearing(s). Considering this motor will then have had its 3rd bearing incident, I will then not reuse the block or heads at ALL.

New build will have to be as follows:

New block from a car without bearing problems
1st gen heads from car without bearing problems
New oil pump
Polish current crank (hopefully)
Transfer rods
Transfer pistons w/ new rings
New oil cooler
Transfer SS valves
Transfer 99 lifters

No idea what this is going to cost me now....my year is now ruined.

Edit: Anyone have a 2-bolt block and/or 1st gen heads that are in usable condition??

Keep in mind F1, Baja, Pro 2 and Pro 4 engines are rebuilt every other race if not more frequently.

I just asked around....Pretty sure our cars have never spun bearings. (baja/formula)

I look at it like this....My engine is ticking and it shouldn't be. It has 99 lifters. It's not a knock, yet. I'm almost certain that my bearings are just getting to the point where their clearances are causing noise.

I'm assuming you (or someone you know) directly deals with Baja focused race vehicles. May I ask which team you work for or are associated with?

And I've always entertained the thought that our commonly spun bearings are directly linked to the oiling circuitry concerning the crank.

I'm on the formula team along with two of my roommates. We know the other CAMP teams pretty well too so...yeah.

Why guess? Cut open your oil filter and look inside. That will tell you the story.

Ugh! I don't know what I didn't think of that yesterday. I guess I was already pretty mad after jumping to conclusions. I already disposed of the oil and filter and the dumpster has apparently already been dumped. :( I was planning on just pulling the motor anyways. Its ticking and it shouldn't be. It's the end of the season so I should have some time. If I can get it pulled by December, I will have an entire month during break to tear into it.

PM me the price please. I really don't have any spare money atm but I want to kind of gauge the cost of my plan.

Ive got an N/A block out of a 94 sl....128k miles.

I'm not sure if that's even compatible with a turbo setup. I thought the turbo blocks had oil squirters and the N/As didn't? I could be wrong though. I've only worked with this block. Not that you NEED the oil squirters, but I prefer them.

Oh, and if it's out of a 94 I'm pretty certain its a 4-bolt main. I have a brand new 2-bolt oil pan and I really don't feel like the whole 4-bolt conversion.

NA never had a 4 bolt, oil squirters are a debated topic up and down. Seen big power with and without them. All NA blocks are 2 bolt. If you want the oil squirters and 2 bolt, you want a 91-92 TT block only

Ahhh...ok. So my oil pump and pan would bolt right up? What its condition? and what are you looking to get out of it? I would more than likely keep my pistons and have to bore it out to match so.

Well...I've decided I'm going to sell my '06 kawasaki ninja 636 this spring and put all of my focus on my car. I plan on using the extra funds on a Pampena 3.1 and college tuition. The bike was a HS graduation gift to myself and I've had my fun for now but nothing seems to be exciting as twisties on 4 wheels (and safer). I can always pick up another bike after college. :)

Wait so you did drop the plan and confirm you did spin the bearings?

No I have not. I'm almost 100% certain the metallic flakes came from my engine so I feel that pulling the motor during the off season will be beneficial regardless if it actually spun. If it hasn't, fantastic. I will then tear it apart and clean it again and try to diagnose this weird ticking noise. If it has spun, which I think it did, or is about to, then I tear it down and diagnose the extent of the damage. I'm hoping to save as many of my internals as possible and send them to Pampena Motorsports for a fresh 3.1 build, done professionally. This motor has been cursed with multiple bearing failures and if there's anyone that can remove ALL of the remaining metal particles, it will be Pampena.
