View Full Version : Drivetrain Competition Clutch Stage 2 or 3 reviews?

So far the stock clutch has worked fine for me but since my trans is out I figure I might as well do a clutch. Initially I was going to do a stock oem friction plate and pressure plate but it couldn't hurt to go with a very mild clutch upgrade.
I know a lot of people recommend the RPS Max clutch, but its simply way out of my price range and i'm pretty sure its overkill considering the stock clutch was doing fine.
I was considering going with a stock friction plate with the RPS Max pressure plate, but the RPS Max pressure plate alone is well over $600. For that price I might as well get the RPS Max pressure plate and street disk.
So the most 'budget' friendly clutch that I can think of would the the Competition Clutch Stage 2 or 3

is anyone using this clutch with good results? I hate to sound like a cheep s.o.b. but i dont think i need much more than the stock clutch at my power levels.
if not does anyone have a recommendation for a good clutch setup that wont break the bank?

The comp clutches seem to have decent reviews in the dsm communities. Also the ebay XTD clutches seem to hold okay according to many.

well if they hold up to a DSM's AWD launch than they should hold up to a VR4's. i would assume the shock load between a DSM and 3S clutch drop would be similar and also the rivets holding the clutch disk to the hub are prob the same for all of the clutches produced by Competition Clutch.
i found an old thread in which the rivets of the clutch popped out. supposedly the holes for the rivets were too large causing some slack in-between the hub and clutch disk which caused the rivets to sheer.

the thread is over 2 years old though so maybe Competition Clutch has improved there rivets/machining process since then. anyone got any newer reviews? im defiantly considering the stage 2-4 SPRUNG clutch kits. it seams like anyone whose ever popped rivets out was running the solid hubs. plus the springs have got to make a launch a little bit easier on the drivetrain.
def gonna be buying a clutch setup within a week though so any info at all on any of the clutch kits would be helpful.

I'm currently running their Stage 4 sprung kit. I installed this after running a stock clutch for 4 years so that's what I will be comparing it to...
First thing I noticed after installation was how light the pedal was. I expected it to be substantially stiffer than the stock clutch, but it's surprisingly light, easily capable of being a strong street/strip clutch for a DD. With the sprung kit, slipping the clutch is made easy in traffic, a little more rev's than the stock clutch are needed though, or you will get chatter, which should be expected from a 6 puck. I haven't tracked the clutch yet, but from what I've felt so far, it has a lot of grab, whether from a stand still or high RPM gear shifts, I can easily tell the difference between this and the stock clutch. So far, it's a great clutch and I'm very happy with my purchase. Don't be afraid to DD this one either, it's very easy to deal with, even with the clutch vac assist deleted.

Well since 3SX is having a sale on the Competition Clutches i figured i would bump this thread. I ended up purchasing a Competition Clutch Stage 4 - Strip Series 1620 Clutch Kit several months ago off ebay, since 3sx didnt have them in stock at the time, and would highly recommend the clutch to anyone. O_ROD hit the nail on the head with his review.
i commute ~600-700 miles a week in my VR4 and havent had any issues.
