View Full Version : Box for dual Tang Band 6x9 subs
Four sides assembled, here - box is 3/4" MDF, externally 40"x15"x6 1/2...

Here is the original port idea - schedule 40 pvc, but the hardware is to big for the dimensions of the box, which are locked-in, spec-wise...

http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr214/1backforty8/1992%20Stealth/car%20projects/P1010047.jpg
The subs will take up some space, too...
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr214/1backforty8/1992%20Stealth/car%20projects/P1010048.jpg
So, with 2fnloud's help, I reconfigured the port...

http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr214/1backforty8/1992%20Stealth/car%20projects/P1010052-1.jpg
And the lid is the final piece of the port-puzzle, venting out the top-front...
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr214/1backforty8/1992%20Stealth/car%20projects/P1010058-2.jpg
Now, just mentally slide the lid over and you see how the port is configured...

They're 6x9s, but they're FAT...
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr214/1backforty8/1992%20Stealth/car%20projects/P1010055-2.jpg
And, for comparison purposes, alongside the OEM 6x9s...

http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr214/1backforty8/1992%20Stealth/car%20projects/IMG_0095.jpg
And finally...

More to come...

I hope you round the edge of the port opening.

looking good! where are you putting this when it's done?

Thanks, sketch.
It'll sit all the way back in the hatch - it's about as wide (at 40") as it can be and still drop straight in...it'll fill the space forward to within a few inches of the trims for the rear struts.
The speakers and port will be forward in the box.
I figured that I could shift it to the top of the fold-down if cargo needs dictate; if I have to do that. I would likely use a cargo strap to secure it - in the hatch it will be secured with some simple bracketry fixed to the false floor.
That's a pretty big box. My trunk space is too valuable for that. I'm happy with my bazooka. Its "small" and works great.

I like the Bazookas too, Eugene.
I went this way because my original mounting idea fell through but I was still really interested to see how these things would sound.
It's also ALL the way back, which is so shallow, I've found the normal things I travel with won't fit there - except maybe shoes or stuff like that. :)

Folded down back seats was my guess as it looked about that size.
As it's going to sit in the back, are you going to make any pieces to make it fit with the rear trim pieces, jigsaw puzzle piece style?

extra tool set ;)
A properly maintained car will not need a tool set ;)
That statement applies even more so to those of us that do not DD our 3s.

True, and true.
I don't anticipate trouble, but I always have something I can throw together.
I keep it right behind Missus J's seat, cuz there's always some room - she's smallish. :)

Don't think I'll do that for a while.
Eventually, it would be a good way to locate/secure it back there, but I want to go down the road with it a couple of times to see how it travels and get some more ideas; see what else might fit in the space.
Off-hand, I could see hinging some wings on top to just swing/slide into the back and corners to hide storage underneath.
When you think in terms of bag chairs and all the other crap...
Finally wrapped the box and dropped in the subs:

Have yet to hear the darn thing; perhaps this weekend, if other events cooperate. :)

Looks Great! :bigthumb:
Are those too deep to fit in the stock location or were you just wanting a more/bigger sound with the box?

unfortunately they where too deep to fit in the stock location, when he showed me pictures of them next to the original 6x9 I was like:eek5: they have a huge magnet.
So sense he was stuck with now needing to put them in the hatch area I designed him a box that gave a nearly flat output a.k.a. a Sound Quality audiophiles dream box.
Steve is exactly correct.
These next to the stockers is like the Hulk next to PeeWee Herman.
Anyway, here's the box in the hatch - please forgive the blurriness; I actually used my camera, and they still suck:

That box is bigger than it looks.
It is an edifice, yes. :)
Moving the amps to a mount on top of the box...one done, one to go:

http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr214/1backforty8/1992%20Stealth/car%20projects/P1010070-1.jpg
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr214/1backforty8/1992%20Stealth/car%20projects/P1010072.jpg
I will add a bit of length to the input wires in order to mount the smaller amp; they're a little short to move the amp far enough right now, but the entire unit will be able to be disconnected quickly for easy removal/access.
The + & - 4G blocks will be mounted on the front of the box below the amps, and mount some lift-handles toward the outside edges of the top.

Make sure you get some split loom to make that wire situation nice and clean

Gonna try it with some spiral - see how that looks.
Trying to find some decent disconnects for the signal wires - was thinking of some trailer hardware to get 4-wire plugs but it's all too light, and 110v plug are kinda spendy for decent stuff, cuz I'd need 4 sets.
ANYWAY...
Finally had time to play with levels and crossover points, etc., and got things sorted a bit better - these 6x9s actually ROCK.
I'm not into hip-hop or rap or any of that stuff, but these things are downright impressive; having done the bit of tuning that I did, I can turn up the wick to the point where they can strut their stuff, so-to-speak - at 125-130 for the pair, they're a helluva deal.
