Will tablets take over Laptop Market?

With people like me looking forward to the Transformer Prime which can basically turn into a laptop, do you think people will have a need for traditional laptops anymore?

I know I'm excited about this tablet due to the 12hr battery life that can be extended to 18 with the keyboard, along with how light and durable it will be with the gorilla glass.

I am just wondering if now with smartphones getting very powerful and tablets using the same OS, will this take away focus from the windows computers. Will the latest and greatest software be developed for Android OS and, hate to say it, iOS over Windows?

(Hope this doesn't sound like an ad for the Transformer Prime, but I am just looking forward to that and the Galaxy Nexus, both of which will be released in the next couple weeks.)

Not anytime soon. Give the tablet market another 4-6 years and that might change.

You will see more progression towards tablets as time moves on. There is a nitch for both tablets and laptops. People who used to carry a laptop around as they made quick notes on the move (such as an inventory coordinator) or checked in on emails and websites on the go will move to a tablet. People who are on the move, but need to regularly sit down with their laptop to type out letters, excel documents, etc are going to stick with a laptop as it's going to be much more productive for that type of use.

I guess I will find out after I get the Prime, ultra thin, and has a keyboard attachment. Now we just need more datalogging tools built for android. Already have Torque. EvoScan for Android would be great.

It will be a few more years. Honestly I couldn't use a tablet as a laptop just yet, but once windows 8 comes out I think it could make a huge difference and people could switch.

I bought a Toshiba Thrive when it came out, I hardly ever use it. I'm in Florida on vacation right now and brought my 5 year old Gateway laptop and left the tablet at home.

a tablet is a pc, honestly this whole OMG the tablet is the future is all bs...

ipads are not powerful enough to run real intensive software... Try running photoshop on one... Develop apps on one...

MS and windows 8 is a touch experience. Its not just tablets its whatever device. To say "tablets" now is a waste.

Your PC's will be be a touch screen and a keyboard of some sort, thats your pc of the future. and it will be touch enabled and it will be in all kinds of forms...

Your TV, your table, your phone, your laptop, your tablet... your house will be a pc... but this whole "OMG tablets are the future, the pc is dead" is some stupid guy trying to pump apple stock... to think the future is "tablets" is foolish, to think our future is 10 inch touch screens is just dumb..

Ya people still think tablets are new? I remember the first tablet wave, back when they were laptops converted to transform into a tablet, to be operated with a stylus. The new ones are just oversized ipods.

IMO, laptops will stay around for the heavy work, netbooks will lose ground to tablets, and eventually we'll have computers that can interact with us on a mental level, which will knock both out and replace them with a box you'd carry around.

I think that tablets will definitely cannibalize a lot of the netbook market share, but if you're buying a real laptop, I doubt a tablet would fill your needs. I can use a tablet for surfing the net, checking email, playing games, etc, but if I actually need to type something, SSH into a machine, or do anything more than point-and-click, I pull out the laptop. A netbook, even with a keyboard, just isn't comparable to a full laptop, and even the battery life isn't that amazing. My Thinkpad X220 can go ~8 hours on a charge with just the 29+ battery, and add another 8 with the slice battery. My phone can barely manage 24-36 hours of charge, if I'm not doing much more than just checking messages, making a few calls, and maybe looking up something up on the web occasionally.

Fair enough. I just bring this up because of the new tablet coming out soon. It's quad core (actually 5/quint core), thinner than the new iPhone and nearly as thin as the slim part of the razr, and has a keyboard attachment/touchpad. As for the display, 178deg viewing angle and gorilla glass.
