Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey. I just laughed for three days.

So with me being home because the wife is having some medical issues I have had a little bit of time to do some reading. In the last three days, I've polished off three novels (the only one that are out there) in Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim series. The three books are called Sandman Slim (duh), Kill the Dead, and Aloha From Hell.

How do I explain this series? First, take Dresden and make him a completely pissed off magical savant who has been cast into Hell for 11 years after his "friends" backstab him and use him a payment for a deal with some super-badass anti-angel's known as the Kissi. While there in Hell, he is forced to fight in the Arena, slowly losing a grip on what it means to be a human and becoming something that is almost like rage and violence personified.

Then he escapes.

After waking up on a burning trash pile in an L.A. cemetery, he sets off to find his old "friends" who sent him "Downtown", as he calls it, and show them just what it is they did to him. Crazy hoodo doctors, a reformed semi-human woman who drinks people like a spider drinks a fly, his 150 year old French alchemist buddy who accidentally made him self immortal and the talking head of one of his old "friends" all join up for probably the largest collection of "fuck you"'s, bullets and stolen cars this side of Grand Theft Auto IV.

Warning: this book is as irreverant as Hell, pun intended.

i havent made the transition to Ebooks yet...but i just snagged this one onto my droid via google books :D

and not just any kindle. e-ink kindle. f**k the fire. i've had my 3g kindle for about a year, and it's been awesome. i used it for work-related training, online college classes, you name it. slightly slow speed is more than made up for by the ability to hightlight selections & search from highlights. makes citing sources a breeze.

well, i finally finished it yesterday...t'was definately was a bit different, except for the "one man saves the world" thing...which i usually cant stand. BUT this one was far enough off the beaten path, that it kept me waiting for more down time to keep reading :)

...other than the heaven/hell angle (which may irk some of the religious crowd) there were some hilarious portions, however brief :lol:

my only real issue was technical at best, i was unaware that the droid needs a signal to keep reading a book. im guessing it only grabs a few pages at a time to keep you moving thru it, cause as soon as i would climb out over about 13,000 feet it would shut down on me until i descended back below same altitude :(

...so i guess its on to book two :D

Thank you for pointing me to this series. I made it through the first book in two days reading every minute I could. I rarely read but I loved this book. The next two are on their way from Amazon right now! :D
