they do have "security" on it. problem is, sony gave a giant FU to its fans by brutally cracking down on linux. and by brutal, i mean that the guy who cracked the PS3 to REALLOW support for linux is being driven into bankruptcy by sony dogging him like a snake.

succinctly, sony is reaping what they are sowing. from installing malware for CD owners (years ago), to draconian tactics regarding the PS3, sony has been taking a nosedive in popularity. i, for one, will be overjoyed if the playstation dies a firey death. we don't need 3 consoles in the market anyways--and it's not like sony is offering anything "compelling" that you can't get on an xbox.

With streaming media becoming more popular, PS3 has no obvious advantage as both the XBOX and PS3 can stream 1080p. And ask anyone who has the better online experience, it's XBOX hands down. The ONLY reason I would get a playstation is for "Dust 514" but screw that.

I don't see the logic in renting or buying Blu-Ray when you can pay pretty much the same (or even download movies from other not so legal sources) to stream it in HD.

Well for one, if you have a dedicated home theater, then buying a new BD when it comes out for $20-$25 and getting to own it and stick it in your library is better than paying $6 or $7 to rent it and watch it for a day. I also don't go out to the theater much, so when I buy a movie, it's actually cheaper than going to the theater when you consider the price of two tickets, popcorn/drinks, and even the gas and time to get there.

Yes.

That being said... Sony has really done their best to screw their fanbase with the PS3. I still use the original model, because it gives me 4 USB ports and is backwards compatible with my old games, and the HD is easily upgradable (mine was the 60GB originally, now it's 500.) One of the best redeeming things they had in return for taking features away from the PS3 is that network play is free. If they ever started charging, I think they'd lose a ton of people who are already on the fence after the last security breach.

I have a 360. I was actually looking into getting a PS3 until my fiance moved in and now I have a BR player. I found out the PS3 uses like 3 times the power of a standalone player (because it's other features are all going while you're watching said BR). I can't remember the article if I can find it I will post up.

I'd like to get a PS3 just to have one but I love the Media Center extender for the 360 too much to give it up. Got over 30 HD movies saved on my PC and a couple hundred full albums that I can stream to my surround at any time. One thing I would love is a youtube app built into the dashboard like the playstation.

As much as you talk shit about the PS3, Ive had mine since 2007 and its still going strong. Every single person Ive known with an XBox has had it die at least once. Some more than others. Honestly though, I dont use it that much anymore between 2 jobs and 10 hours of Chinese a day.

Same. Mine has run quite well through the duration. People (especially those that pay for service -- XBOX users) complain about it all the time even though they don't own one. How about, don't put your credit card number on PSN (use prepaid PSN cards) and enjoy FREE online service without 10x the amount of young kids online with a much more reliable system. XBOX is WAY more likely to crash and red ring than a PS3. Plus, if you've owned one from the get go you have no paid well over $100 to play online with 10 year old kids. Plus, XBOX doesn't play Blu ray, many of the earlier models don't have Wi'-fi, and again, they are super unreliable. Minus the one outage period in over half a decade I have had zero problems with my free service and more reliable system. :)

and that is precisely why i have a wii & game FPS's on a PC. no worries about sony's piss-poor security or vendetta against modders; no worries about microsoft's piss-poor quality control and rediculous charges for online play.

Guess I'll have to respond with my experience at some point. To give you a preview, I had the PS3 since it came out (60gig model) and up until a year ago used it exclusively until I was forced to convert due to a hardware malfunction on the ps3.

I'll never go back to it. More on that when I have time.

You can do the same thing with the PS3. I have two of them, one in my media room and one downstairs. One I stream everything to, and the one downstairs I stream music to play through my stereo system.

As an aside... I'll never understand how some of you can be bashing the PS3 if you've never even owned one. I mean really, were you mad you couldn't afford one when they first came out or something? As far as gaming systems go, I've been in the game since the Atari 2600. When the PS3 came out, it gave you a ton of value for the money, BD player (when a regular BD player was selling for about $300 or more anyway) gaming system with 1080P output, bluetooth, streaming media, web browser... It's a computer that allows you to play movies and PS3 games. So far, I'd say it's been the best gaming system to come out yet.

+1 on Jeff. I've used a PS3 extensively (borrowed a friend's for about six months) and I just couldn't get used to the strange things it did. He had a 60GB model and it ended up dieing. His family has three slim PS3s now mostly for the BD capabilities.

I did really enjoy the Drake series though, it actually felt like I was playing a movie.

Such as? Only problem I've ever had with mine (notwithstanding the original 60GB one I had that a drunken friend of my roommate peed on and fried :rolleyes: ) is a hard drive went out, and I really didn't care that much because for under $100, I was able to drastically increase the size and speed of the drive after years of use.

Occasionally it will freeze up if it gets too hot, but that is a rare occurrence.

The web browser would randomly crash. The updating process is slow as balls. My friend and I both have 30mbps down so that's not the issue, the PS3 is just slow. It would freeze up at random. Certain games wouldn't let you play without an internet connection (I believe M$ forces every game to have offline play)

I have a side business repairing XBOXs and PS3s. Just to clarify things, I fix more PS3s for YLOD than XBOXs with RROD. So that arguement is invalid. Oh and the Yellow light turns RED and Flashes :)

Current ration of repairs is 4 PS3s to every 1 XBOX.

I own all 3 systems.

The Wii gets played a lot, mario games, Zelda games, Mario Kart gets played multiple ties a week with family online.

The XBox I have for a couple of games. All the rockstar games, LA NOIR, Red Dead etc. Also Batman and the big one is Forza, I play online with my Dad.

The PS3 I own no games for, but I use it for my bluray player in the living room, and to stream videos from my computer in the office to my TV. It is a media hub.

That's because people want to fix a PS3. The XBOX is seen as disposable and people just go get a new one after their 2nd or 3rd one fails.

I agree, ive owned 5 xbox's and all of them died due to the RROD, i really disliked how it sounded like a big fan was on every time the system was on, and it worked better as a room heater than a game player, another thing was paying the 50 or 60 bucks just for xbox live for a year, after a while it was pointless cause i would go months without using it.

The only things i dislike about the ps3 is that it takes forever to download some files, thats pretty much it though.
And i think the online gameplay is somewhat the same except that theres alot more nonsense talking on xbox because there systems come with a mic.

Well, granted, I have a newer-gen xbox. I never notice the fan, as it's not something that I look for. That being said, I always noticed my PS3 when it was on, this problem having been solved to a point on the newer models.

My hardware malfunction that I ran into is not one that has any known solution. That malfunction is currently 2.5 years old and his name is Gage and he decided to shove five dvd's into my ps3, damaging it beyond my -and my wallet's- capability to repair. Some time after that there was some kind of special occasion, Target was having a sale and next thing I knew I was coming home with a new 360+Kinect.

Now, being a lifelong Sony Fanboy, I was hesitant to like the M$ abomination sitting in my living room. The fucker couldn't play Blu-Ray, the controller was the size of a VW Passat and there was a power converter that could easily be used as a home defense weapon if the shit really hit the fan.

I hated it. Up until the moment I turned it on.

The online integration was fantastic. No longer did I have the issue of the PS3 kicking off all other devices from the wifi/hardline and it was quite a bit quicker. So far so good. Added a couple of my work buddies to my friends list -oh hey, look, something a bit more substantial than the simple picture provided by the PSN. Looking better.

As time went by, I found that the integration and implementation of the overall system was a bit more seamless on the xBox than on the PS3. A PS3 is a graphical powerhouse, that is to be sure, but it is not very refined - be it the online aspect or GUI it always seemed like these aspects were rushed simply to get it out there.

An understandable decision.

Years later though, it's been issue after issue, most notably with the recent hacking issues. When the 360 first came out it used the "blade" system. MS dumped that and went to its current set up not long after the release, most likely because it was garbage. If only Sony would have realized the same thing with Sony @Home, but that's a different topic all together. Updates are always a pain, and not just for the system but for individual games. I use to dread updates coming out for CoD or ACII because I knew that if the PS3 was hooked up to the LAN, my ass was not going to be playing anything that night. The worst I ever had was 23 times trying to update CoD. Eventually I just unplugged the damn thing from the 'net and never plugged it back in unless I absolutely needed to.

LOL I'd say the "Gage" malfunction is completely "User Error," not the PS3. :) My PS3 doesn't kick off other things from the network, so maybe that is a router issue? The update thing I'll give you... it can be pretty annoying when you buy a game a month or two after the release date, and you have to wait for it to download any updates before you can even play the damn thing. However, that wouldn't be a mark against the PS3 to my thinking, but to the game manufacturer, for not working out any bugs before release date in most cases.
