I still can't believe how completely fake black ops looks compared to Bad Company 2. It seriously looks like a FPS from 10 years ago.

Anyway, BF3 on pre-order can't wait. It's going to make MW3 look like sims.

Agreed. I have tons of hours in BF2 and Bad Company 2. BF3 is going to cause me to postpone marriage.

last console FPS i played was goldeneye wii. i'm perfectly happy playing alien swarm instead of any console fps's. new vegas is sitting unopened, waiting for it's turn--so i've no need for anything else.

Playing Borderlands still (in fact, just hopped out of it), and as far as I'm concerned STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl is the best FPS on the market still. I don't care about any of the CoD or MW games as multiplayer PvP gets boring after about 5 minutes. Co-op is much more fun (Borderlands, L4D2, etc).

I really liked "From Dust" on XBL Arcade but it could have lasted longer with more interaction. I'd love to see a console remake of Black & White or even a new Black & White 3 on the XBOX. Yes I know it's not FPS.

A groups of 7 Friends and I normally get together some nights and play on XBL with bad company 2, formed into 2 squads in party chat and rape everything all night long. Its absolutely amazing. We are all super stoked for B3 and are pretty much Done with the CoD's because they are inferior to the frostbite engine Battlefield runs on. I love the idea of no wall being safe to hide behind. if you can shoot a bitch with a bullet, get good old carl gustav out to meet a badger. As far as dead island, I do like it, but its not worth anything over $25 IMHO. I have a sweet gaming PC rig but all my friends only have consoles so I still play there and pirate Pc versions most of the time.

SC ForgottenOne is my live name, feel free to add me. I play when I have time after class and studying.

Took forever to download...finally got it and now I can't seem to be able to pick a server and the ones it sticks me on are all laggy. Other than that...its one of if not the best FPS this year.....and it has tanks too.

And the sound....over the top, amazing...I don't think I've played another FPS where you get the same feel that bullets are whizzing by.

Sounds like you may not have given Bf an honest chance. Also B3 is designed around the PC this time around, no controllers needed for that version :-)

Been playing mostly BFBC2, MW and BO are a joke compared to it. Used to be big into both, but nothing beats beating able to fly, drive, and blow through walls at your discretion + realistic bullet paths. Looks amazing too. L4D series got old (after about 600 hours).

My fall-back game is TF2. Up to 817 hours on that, and I was playing TF long before they started keeping track of how long you've played. Still doesn't get old.

The i5 quad is faster than the x6 even while utilizing all cores. It's the same price, you're not getting more for less. If you look at any charts you will see quite quickly the core i5 2400 quad is the best valued CPU currently on the market. Number of cores doesn't mean anything when they have inferior architecture.

Now, now... don't pick on the AMD fan. They haven't had anything to stand on since Intel woke up from their multi-year inebriation known as the p4. :p

I've been nursing along this old q6600 for ~4 years now. Tax return will be paying for me a shiny new Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge-E setup (or maybe IB-E if it's out then?) and this rig will be broke down into the wife and kids computers. I'm looking forward to see how long the next computer will hold up.

This^... I have been running the i7 for a while now. yeah I love it but after lots of research and working with other processors in class, I have quickly learned Intel is great for Servers and the like. However when it comes to gaming AMD has the better market simply because of cost and the fact both brand perform nearly the same. AMD has come a long way since the 90s, because of them Intel doesnt control the PC market anymore.

momentary snapshot of a brief period of time. intel taking the value crown from amd is even more fleeting than nvidia taking the performance crown from ati. the trend has been--and continues to be--that amd has the best value for the money. long term trends prove this.

better still, amd's upcoming integrated cpu/gpu solutions will THAT much better for gaming than intel's pathetic "on board" graphics or slapping an nvidia card in an intel motherboard.

amd has been the value king since the k6-2. next thing we know, you'll be telling me that dell pc's are "leet".

You will never convince someone on the other side. Argue only if you enjoy beating your head into a wall :D

At the time I got my x6 it was not the best bang for the buck. It did kill all of the similar priced Intel in media encoding. The media encoding speed with the ease of upgrade from the 5000+ I'd had kept me in the AMD camp.

rage looks VERY promising...but i'll wait & see. sad thing is, Id hasn't offered as good FPS's as Epic in the last 10 years, imho. yet epic has apparently sold out to bloodly consoles (gears, etc). it would be nice if rage hasn't dropped the ball. i won't hold my breath; it IS a console release as well.

Same here, that was money well spent way back when. BF3 on Ultra is still almost playable with the 8800GT...almost, but definitely not. Plays great on low/medium. Going to upgrade the GPU and that's it, I bet it plays perfect on ultra with just the Q6600. Looks and sounds amazing in the beta phase, definitely will buy.

As long as you have enough processor not to bottleneck your videocard it's a non issue for most games. Pick your favorite flavor. Everybody puts such a ridiculous focus on processors for gaming rigs when they should be spending their money on a better videocard.

I have built a ton of both Intel and AMD rigs. AMDs software and tweaks have always felt very enthusiast oriented and now even more than ever with the ATI buyout.

I personally have always been an AMD fan and wouldn't buy an Intel processor for one of my gaming rigs if it was cheaper and shit rainbows

Soo Back on Topic. Rage is pretty sweet. Its huge (3 disks) and reminds me a lot of Borderlands without the cartoony look. graphics are sick. One of my favorite things so far is when you shoot a badger in the leg and he takes enough damage they limp. Only played for about an hour but seems pretty promising, especially with online coop (again like borderlands)

Your "until they realize they are wrong" comment keeps bugging me. Lets look at the X6 1075. Yes based on the price and gaming performance the X6 is not the best bang for the $$. If you look closely at the raw scores on the games you'll see two things. IN most of the games it is one of the top performers and the top performers are only separated by few frames per second. If you stopped here the i5-2300 and the i3-2100 do look like better ways to spend money.

But gaming is not the complete story....

Somethign you need to think about when you tell people that AMD the right choice. Not everyone builds a system for just gaming. Sure the intel has some great low end options but lets look at other scores.

Lets look at media encoding, zipping, photoshop applications that really use multi threading and use it correctly.

Benchmark Results: Applications : Six New Phenom II And Athlon II CPUs From AMD (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/phenom-ii-x6-1075t-phenom-ii-x4-970-phenom-ii-x2-560,2749-5.html)

All of the sudden the X6 is hanging with and beating the i5 and i7 chips and a much lower cost point. When you consider applications and gaming the 1075 X6 for $160 is a much better buy than the I7-920 at $260.

You should to keep things like this in mind when you spout off about people being "wrong" just because their buying decisions don't match yours don't mean they are "wrong".

Ahh I didn't see the x6 for $160, saw the one for $189. How about the i5 2500k? If you want to be fair, then compare the intel chip that's at the same price point. It beats out the 1100 X6 and is $160. Admittedly I haven't checked into whether the 1075 is better than the 1100, but I would imagine the $190 1100T would be better than the $160 1075T, no?

The i5 2500k is a great chip and will dominate the amd chips out right now, especially with an overclock. Mine is running 4.2ghz on stock voltage and just by changing the multiplier. Haven't tried faster, but most hit 4.5 or so with a little extra voltage.

Hell my i3 2100 beats the x6 in some visual studio stuff I use all day.

Some of the comparisons from before are gen 1 I series chips, which were a lot slower. Make sure you get a lga 1155 chip, not 1156. 1155 is series 2.

Wish I would have linked it this morning, it was on there for $159 but out of stock. No where to be found now, must not have been a legit price judging by what they're at. Oh well, I wasn't trying to do the Intel vs AMD battle either because I don't have a preference (The last AMD chip I had was the 3700+ and that destroyed all.). I just find that AMD fanboi's a lot of times claim superiority purely based on loyalty and reasons having nothing to do with performance (monopoly bs), but you have a good point.

That's just customer loyalty, and I'm okay with that. However, I do hope your tune changes if the performance v. price is ever lacking. An inferior product deserves to fail, and that goes for either side.

Newegg has the 2500k for 210 where are you finding it for $160
The 1100k is 190 at Newegg

Looking at a comparison I found on anandtech its as I'd expect the 2500k has a edge over the course of about 30 tests.

Right down the street from you too Alan. :p

Going back to the thread topic: Had a major bummer of a news piece come up. I've been a huge fan of the STALKER series games for years now. It seems that GSC has decided that they want to screw over their main fanbase by making STALKER 2 for consoles and giving PC users a big finger by giving it always-on DRM. It's a shame, really. All three of the games out really shine once the community breaks into it and starts modding them. With this Ubisoft style of DRM they are insuring that I will not be purchasing their game unless I see it for about $5. You would think that companies would see the loss of sales and increase in piracy when they do this shit? RAGE has been considered a flop on PC, Crysis 2 was a phenomenal flop compared to the original, and with this announcement I see the next STALKER being a failure. There's hardly any name recognition outside of the PC community, so I don't see it selling on consoles all that well and the pc community is going to shun it because they feel like they've been sold out by the developer.

DRM does not stop piracy. It only stops legit sales.

100% agree. however, i still insist that FPS's should be designed first and foremost for PC. i don't give a flip what kind of consumer-base is on consoles. if you do not design for PC, the quality will be shit across the board. besides, with the last 3 generations of consoles becoming increasingly more "PC like", it should be an elementary proposition to port PC-based games these days. just downscale them & remove all the graphic polish.

oh wait...THAT'S why they don't want to make pc games. it has nothing to do with consumer base; it has everything to do with being lazy & wanting to cash in while doing a minimal amount of work. i hope the rest of you are with me in voting with your wallets.

i STILL refuse to own an xbox/ps3 because of the systemic destruction of FPS gaming on PC's.

Agreed, console ports suck for the most part. Everyone seems to do a half-ass job. xbox is good for Forza and MMA, but FPS games are meant to be playing with a mouse and a keyboard.

That price for the 2500K pops up pretty often. You said you couldn't find it for that price, I proved you wrong. You can't go adding stipulations after the fact. :p The entire thing can come down to this: If you want a cheap, bang for the buck cpu, go AMD. If you want the best, go Intel. There's no arguing that any which way.

As for the Steam comment - Steam does not remove a companies in-place DRM. A good example would be Batman: AA. Though I installed it through Steam, I still have to use it's retarded DRM that makes me activate each install and then deactivate it before uninstalling plus it and DoW II had to go through GFWL even though I activated it through Steam. My steam library (most of it): SteamCalculator.com - How much is your Steam Account worth? (http://www.steamcalculator.com/id/jc81) - I am not new to this wonderful little program. ;)

I stand by most of you when I say that these companies are starting to shoot themselves with their turning to consoles for their games. Console gamers are loyal to 2 things: Their parents so they don't get kicked out and CoD/BF (whichever one is their flavor). Most console players I know don't even buy the games anymore. They rent from Gamefly or Blockbuster or wherever. PC gamers on the other hand seem to build relationships with companies. Just look at the Intel vs AMD thing going on here, and I won't get into the love affair most gamers have with Gabe Newell. Most PC Gamers feel that they are being betrayed by the companies that they built up with their money (Crytek is the poster child for this). I can see GSC failing as well with STALKER 2 this way since it's going both console port and have draconian DRM on top of it. If id thinks they can make their living off consoles, I can see them failing as well with their slow churn rate on new games on their lack of recognition with console players.

TL;DR - game developers are biting the hand that feeds them, and will get themselves hurt in the process.

user created content has always been dominant on PC. while this content does not directly add to the coffers of the game developers, it is this content which creates enduring appeal which can--in turn--generate additional game sales. odd that developers are so blind to this.

Yep. I know I keep going back to STALKER, but once again this is a game that fits your description there. The game out of thew box is ok, but really buggy. Thankfully, it is extremely easy to modify, and the Complete 2009 modification for it really brings out the best in the game and makes it a truly awesome experience to play. I guess developers are too blind to realize that the community is just as important as the developers. If the community doesn't like your product, it's going to fail no matter how good you think it is,

9 tests
4 to the 750
5 to the X6
seems pretty even to me.

The fact that it takes 2 extra cores for AMD's inferior architecture to keep up with Intel's quads is sad. I'm sorry but I can't say it's impressive that AMD's 6 core CPU can hardly keep up with and in some situations surpass Intels 4 core CPU's in a single type of test. I do know that the Thubans strong point is encoding etc, please do consider we are in the topic FPS games.
Also do keep in mind that you are comparing the 1075T with the i5 750. I'm talking about the 2400 and the 2500 vs the 1100t. As you see below the 2400 is superior in every area. There is really no reason to not spend the extra $30 for a 1100T or 2400. You can also find the 2500k on sale for the price of a 1075t if you're lucky.
Compare Intel Core i5-2500 (Sandy Bridge 4c),
Intel Core i5-2400 (Sandy Bridge 4c), Phenom II X6 1100T Hexa Core Processor, Intel Core i5-750s (Lynnfield 4c ) (http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/desktop-cpu-charts-2010/compare,2431.html?prod%5B4789%5D=on&prod%5B4792%5D=on&prod%5B4757%5D=on&prod%5B4484%5D=on)
It's $189 (Same as the 1100t) on Newegg, I'm sure you can find it consistently that price and cheaper in other places.
Alan please just admit that you're mad that you are stuck with an AMD system. :P

IPD

it's doubtful that the extra cores make a lot of difference; most software still isn't optimized for more than 2 cores. i remember seeing benchmarks for dual vs. quad--and the results being much the same.

Alan92RTTT

In the media encoding tests is was the extra cores that did it. The tests show the number of threads spawned during the test.

Cory, like any intel fanboi you missed my point totally. All I tried to show was that their are reasons other than game performance that figure into CPU selection. People are not "wrong" for picking AMD. While at this specific moment Intel is in the sweet spot and is winning the price/performance race. That can change at any moment. When I build my system AMD was the winner at the price point I was at. Two months from now AMD could be in the lead again.

I have 4 desktops and 2 laptops in the house between them its an even split AMD/Intel.

When you built your system the best bang for the buck for media encoding was the AMD X6 1100T as it is quicker at that then the 750 I agree. If AMD is in the lead when I am building my next system I will gladly go for them. I'm not a fanboy however if someone buys a 1100T over a 2400, they are wrong. =D

LNC cooling and 2.0+V isn't really going to be beneficial for everyday use, but being able to hit 8GHz is impressive any which way you put it (the video in the link shows the 8GHz OC). I also wonder how stable that chip was since all they did was clock it up in windows but not stress it.

I really don't want to install another freaking program just to get BF3..

is it really that good?

does origin let you install any other games through origin?

Yes, and yes. It's just like Steam. I got Crysis 2 for $7 through Origin when they had a deal (I wouldn't recommend the game, the first one is FAR superior). Plus they've worked out most of the bugs already. I still think the whole setup is stupid, but it works I guess.

derailing from FPS's - anyone else playing Space Marine on PC? My wife bought it for me as an early Christmas gift, and I've been loving it so far. :D Something fun about being a 9ft tall genetically altered badass slaughtering hordes of orks. Dunno if it will get old or not.

It's pretty linear, but the combat is very satisfying. The executions to recharge your health are some of the best things I've seen in gaming. Hitting an orks had grand-slam style with a force hammer - brings a tear to your eye. :D

Just played Exterminatus for the first time last night. It's like Last Stand mode from DoW II, but in 3rd person shooter style.
