I've wanted to go for years. How about a little further west :o

Lori
09-11-2010, 03:20 PM
Can you guys do me a huge favor and not talk about all the places you want it to be? Here's the thing, and I'm NOT trying to be bitchy, so please don't take it that way... I wanted to step down a few years ago. I was talked out of it. This year I asked them to give me one more chance because I wasn't happy with some things that happened (what? There's water on the track?). They graciously agreed to let me. The reason I hesitate each year is because of my personal commitments. 19 months ago I bought a retail store. It's 2500 sq ft and has about 20 employees. We do over a half million each year. It's a big business for one person to run... And yes, I have people to help me, but in this economy it requires A LOT of attention. And it's not just time there... It's time paying the bills, ordering, etc. Ok, enough boring you with that. The NG... When we're about a month out, it requires at least 40 hours per week of my time. Then I take 10 days off to make it happen, and usually a couple of days a few weeks later to finish it all up and get ready for the next year. It's crazy the amount of time that goes into it. This is NOT a complaint. I swear to you, it's not. I've asked for this remember.

Here's the thing... With that type of commitment already, the NG can't move too far from me. When it was in Memphis, we were dealing with my server going down... And I mean DOWN. Crashed. Big. Lots of time and money to get it up and limping, while I was 14 hours away. I was incredibly torn between continuing on to Memphis and turning around to go back to Detroit. I can't do that again... I can't be that far away. I love the NG, and I love the people, but every year it's hard to leave. It takes me 80 hrs to prep the store for me to be gone, then an hour a day dealing with emails and stuff for it during the NG... If you do the math, that means the week before NG is 80 hours at the shop and 40 hours of NG stuff, not to mention what Alan has to get done.

This is probably a lot of detail that you didn't need, but I wanted everyone to understand why I ask you to please not debate the location... I'd love to move it out west, but I can't. If someone else wants to take it over for 2012 and move it, then I'm certainly open to the idea of giving it up. But when I hear the great debate I know I'm going to disappoint people and that's really hard for me... I'm a girl - I get emotional. Get over it. And help by not making me feel bad, if you can, please....

That's all. Sorry for unnecessary details.

Lori let me say I have never met you or had the opportunity to attend a NG. From what I have heard you do an excellent job. From being on 3si for so long I can tell you that you have to let a lot of things just slide off your back. Don't take this as a slam, but it just may be a gender thing where you take things to heart a little too much, whereas a guy might just shrug it off. Let the people complain and whine about where they think NG should be. They don't realize just how much of your personal time you use to make it happen. You should be the one to figure out what works best and decide where it happens.

I honestly hope I will be able to attend the NG11, but I will not make any promises so early. Life could be leading me in so many different directions in the coming months.

Good that it doesn't bother you too much, but in all honesty the people that complain about it being too far or have disparaging things to say are people that haven't been to the NG and don't understand the work that really goes into it. I realize I've only been to one (where I met you and Alan) but I worked my ass off at that event simply because I had no car so it was easy for me to help out at every event. Yet i still cannot fathom the amount of work that goes in to the run up to the event.

Well, here's an idea for the west coast people. Drum up the interest again and maybe we could have the West Coast Gatherings in Vegas again. I missed out on those for health reasons and it really pisses me off. I only kid about it being closer and I understand what goes into it. I had no idea about your work situation. I feel like I'm missing out on not having been to the NG once. I'd really like to meet a lot of you. I've missed out for health reasons and for the last couple of years it's been money.

Well, I'm going to do what I can to get the car up to snuff and put aside money to come out there, wherever there might be, for 2011.

I'm def going this year, and I'm assuming it will still be in Indy. That's still a 10+ hour drive for me, and it is totally worth it. I do think, if it ever moves further west, dont think it will though, cause I'd say there are more owners east of the Mississippi, a good place would be Topeka, Kansas. They have an NHRA track there, that also has a very nice road course as well, with the drag strip as part of it. Just a thought. But I'll go wherever it is, even if it was in Alaska, prolly wouldnt drive though lol.

Thanks everyone. I've been so lucky to have such amazing support for the years that I've done the NG... It started off rough, but that's because no one knew who I was or my event planning background... And I WASN'T a car girl. I think I probably shouldn't claim that anymore... I'm still not that into the cars, but I'm into the community. Definitely mark those dates on your calendar... This one is going to be big. I can't tell you the surprise yet, but it's BIG. I think all of the speculation about where the next NG will be is part of the fun. We all rally for our closer to home areas to be the spot, but in reality, we're going to go where ever it is held. It's like we all anxiously await the announcement of the NG just like others do as they await the naming of the location of the next Super Bowl, All-Star game, or Olympics. As for Lori's level of commitment, there can be no comparison. This lady can be summed up in one word....amazing. It's obvious that her and committe put in tons of time on the gathering as they are top class year after year. When your server goes down, or when the track is under water, or the banquet dinner plans go wack, you rise up and overcome the situation. What more can I say, you're the best! I've been to 6 NGs and I can't wait for NG11 and to find out what this "Big Surprise" is! -- Gary

I live in Indy and was so disappointed to not be able to attend NG 2010. I had just bought my 3/s and was completely broke from paying for it so I had to work everyday that week. I am going to do everything I can to try and make it this year though, no matter where it is at.

And Lori, although I have never met you, from what I have heard in my short time being in the 3/s community, you are a very respectable person. No matter were NG is held, there will be people who love the location, and people who don't. With all the time sacrifice you have to give up for it, the location should be somewhere that is not unbelievable difficult for you, and that should be what is important. Subscribed to find out location, and the "big surprise." Thanks again for all the hard work you put into this platform.

Tight budgets, sure. But come on, people have a year to plan for something like this. In a 12 month period, I'm pretty sure most people can scrounge around for the $300-400 it will cost to go. I'll even sign you up as my guest so you can save on registration fees. :p

You would be amazed. I planned on making the one in 2007, had the money, everything was going good up till the day I was going to register. Car broke and other sorts.

How is it not feasible? I can understand why people say it isn't feasible one specific year, but every year?

The first few years I was a broke college student. I probably could have managed in '05 or '06 but was spending all my time off from work driving 3 hours to visit my gf from college. The last few years my job was not one where you could take off for a week at a time. And come next year, I'll have a 3-mo old child, a family to support and a mortgage to pay on a single income (not complaining, just saying) so up and leaving a commision-only job for a week and my gf w/ the baby and our 6 dogs probably wont happen. For me it's not the costs of actually attending, it's the lost income & the responsibilities at home.

I am not saying this will work for you, and am not trying to bust your chops (I am not one to talk, as I haven't been to one, myself), I think the schedule allows for arrivals later in the week, as well. I marked my calendar for 2011, but I started on Thursday, instead of Tuesday, to plan for the "Weekender" package versus the Full week. 2010 Info (http://3sng.org/?link=pricing)

Thanks Lori, those dates are exactly what I was hoping for! They're perfect for my schedule. Me and old blue will be there unless you have it Maine, that's just a bit too far of a drive from San Diego. :-)
I'm also interested in making a contribution towards the show trophies. I'm not a vendor, so I can't be a sponsor, but I'd still like to help. The one NG I attended, in '09 was a lot fun and a great experience, but it seemed like there could have been a few more trophies to give away considering the number of great cars there.

Now who would not like it to be in the entertainment capitol of the world, Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada. Just don't hold it in July or August. Mid October would be fantastic here. If it's to far for most they can just bring pictures of their cars and set them up in a parking lot. Since I live here I'll bring my own car and look at their pictures.

Actually would love to attend one of these but they are always far away and I can't get the time off. Maybe when I retire.

well they have "supras invade las vegas" (not gonna make it this year) we could always have "3000gts invade LV" but it would more likely end up being "3000gts try to invade LV, but end up on a flatbed instead"

I went 2 years ago in Memphis. It was about a 2 and 1/2 day drive for me, but I'm a road warrior. I know Dale wants to go, but he'd have to trailer his car. Once the location is announced, I'll see if and other CA, AZ, NV people would be willing to make the trip.

For those of you who are worried about driving the distance, you could always fly in. I guarantee you will still have fun even without your car. There are at least three major airports nearby: Indy, and then Cinci and Louisville are a little over an hour. Getting a ride from the a fellow NGer shouldn't be a problem.

2285 miles one way. But for a 300 mile detour I can visit the folks in TX. I might just make the drive - yeah it's grueling and time consuming but you see much more on the way :)

The Indy airport is very close to the hotel.. In fact, the hotel offers a free shuttle service, or I'm always happy to pick someone up if it's prior to registration starting on Tuesday and I'm not down there by myself again. And I swear.... If I'm by myself again, there's gonna be hell to pay for the committee members. And someone had better supply me with some Bailey's... A LOT of Bailey's....

That's usually announced when you register.

Lori
09-16-2010, 07:06 PM
The official hotel information is only given out to paid registrants. This way we don't get a bunch of people who THINK they're going to register reserving rooms then cancelling them at the last minute, only for registrants to have to go elsewhere in the meantime. You register, pay, receive a confirmation email with the hotel info, then call and reserve the hotel. Easy peasy.

Registration won't open until the beginning of the year. We're waiting until we can firm up the big surprise, I think. There's a chance we'll open it sooner, but since I think the big surprise will have to be an additional charge (albeit fairly minimal and WELL worth it), it's easiest if we just wait. Killer, isn't it? I'm so mean to you guys.
