View Full Version : Kids - do you plan on having them

Why? What are your reasons? Love the little tackers? You want your family name to live on past you? You dont like sex? I'm curious to hear your thoughts. :)

Obviously not everyone wants kids and not everyone plans to have them. I'm keen to hear from those who are planning or want kids.

I'm way too young to really know how I really feel on that topic, but as it stands right now, I feel like I could go without.

Met a guy I really loved, got married. Seemed like the next logical thing to do. We have two. 15 months apart. Love them with every ounce of my soul, but I am never having any more.

Not planning on having any. My fiancee isn't so sure, she's still being open minded and considering maybe one. I'm crossing my fingers that the 23 kids she has in her class room every day will be work enough that she wont want to have another kid when she gets home. But..then again. I do love kids, I've worked in several daycares throughout the years, I just don't want them. Why? Partially because I'm greedy and kids are expensive. Partially because I think there's enough kids in the world that don't have loving parents to take care of them so if I were to have kids I'd prefer adopting because I think it's more socially responsible.

On the other hand I wish children on all of my friends so that I can be the cool uncle guy that gets to spoil them and take them on cool trips, but then give them back at the end of the day and not have to pay for college or any other such things.

No children for me. Never wanted any. My mom and dad both come from large families and I am the only child out of 7 who doesn't/won't have any. No desire, no need, no want. Most kids are ok, but after a short time......they need to go home.
You planning, Scotty? Doesn't your gf/wife have one already? I thought I read that. Sorry if I am wrong.

Lauren has two already. She would love a little girl and so would I. Problem is, if we produce a boy, I'm afraid I'll get beaten and junior will be stuffed right the hell back in! lol She is still married to captain shit for brains on paper. Once we have saved some money and life is a little more stable (as far as work goes) I'll propose. THEN we can talk kids - err a baby girl. :)

I'm not anywhere close to getting married or having kids, but I want them when I'm ready. I really don't understand the hate of having kids. That's basically all you need to do, reproduce.

I have two and I can't imagine what life would have been without them.
With the first out of college and gainfully working and the second almost done the wife and I now have to figure out what to do with the rest of our lives. It's been almost 24 years since it was just the two of us.

i wont say i dont want any at all, i will say i dont want any i cant support.

if or when i stop firing blanks and Sarah ends up with one in the oven then so be it. but so far thepatter of anything little we want in the near future is dog paws. our cars were our kids and we sold them to go over to the states. no doubt in time we will have more!

Tiffany and I are actually planning to start trying next year.

We only want 1, though twins is a possibility with both of us given our family history.

The one thing I am afraid of with only wanting one is that a girl would be awesome, but if I don't have a son my last name dies out. There has only been one male born for at least 10 generations.

Now the last name it self, does have one other sect here in the states, and there is at least one other family with it in Mexico, but if I don't have a son the name for our lineage dies with me.

Why I want a kid, I think one would be a blast. Just be fun in a way, plus I think of how much fun my sister and I have with our parents and how much that relationship means to me, I'd like to have a kid that I could do stuff like that with as well.

Had a girl August 2007 when i was 22 and it really lit a fire under my ass to stop being a kid and grow up.
I am really happy she is here and now we are building a future for her.

usually in more conservative countries, they keep trying until a boy comes out :D

personally I think each couple should at the minimum produce 2 offspring - a boy and a girl - to replace the couple. seems only fair. maybe an extra one or two more for spares (i.e. kidneys, blood, etc) just in case. lol

That used to bother me. It doesn't anymore. Granted I have a boy (through adoption), my only blood is a girl. It's just a name. Family is family- it should remain the same no matter what it is called- just do a good job teaching your heritage. just my .02

I really like kids and get along with the rather well (mostly), but I know me better than anyone in the world and I know I don't have that 'motherly instinct'. I have no desire to reproduce. Besides, dogs are more loyal....throughout their entire lives (they don't skip the teenage years like kids do!). :p

I'm 33, so most of my friends having been having kids the past 6-7 yrs to now. I've decided I do want kids, but only when we are ready (the plan is to start about 2-3 years from now.) However, I still enjoy being able to go out and do whatever I want, without having to worry about getting a babysitter, or taking a baby to a restaurant where they cry the whole time and you start pissing off all the other people there who are trying to have an enjoyable meal.

My friends that have kids, unfortunately we don't see them often anymore, but that is to be expected. It also got harder to talk to them, because it's all just about their kids now. Then I bring up, hey, have you been to that new wine bar around the corner? No? ...And then we're done talking about the updates to our lives.

I also don't want to annoy my friends that do not have kids just yet, with all the pictures and stories of what my kid did today, because it seems that when you become a parent, you forget that other people don't want or need to hear about every minute detail about feeding time.

Angie would go back and forth on the issue. She was sure she wanted kids. All I had to do was invite her nieces and nephews down for the weekend. Cleared that talking point up for about a year, lol, until she would bring it up again. Then rinse, wash, repeat. She then set a deadline of 40, if she didn't have them by then, it wasn't happening. She'll be 40 in January. Yay! :p She's great with kids, but it doesn't take long until they are massively on her nerves and it's time to send them packing. Once I got that through her head, the discussion was pretty much over.

Really most of it came from family..."when are you going to have kids?" Can't stand that, they've finally backed off now. :)

I dated a girl with 2 kids. 3yr old girl and 18month old boy at the time. Those two kids were my life. Then she cheated and I left. I have always wanted my own kids, but after having a "choice" now, I can definitely say for myself, that I don't want any any time soon. Maybe once I get done with what I am trying to do with my life, but I know that I have already put everything on hold once, I might not have this chance again.

I am 35 and my wife is 34 so our clock has been ticking as she really wants kids...me, I am fine either way. Turns out she has indometriosis which makes it hard for her to get pregnant so our next step was fertility drugs. They could not tell us if we would have 1 or 6 so we slowed down because not sure how much of a role I want science to play in something like this. We have also loosely considered adoption, but I am not sure about that. So, right now we are happy with our Shih-Tzu. It also helps that she teaches 4th grade so half the time she cannot stand the thought of kids anyway after putting up with 30 for 7 hours.

My 3 year old son sits on the front valve cover while I`m working on the car (or inside pretending to drive it!).

I had my lad when I was 30, done all my partying and nearly killed myself drinking a few times in my younger years so it was time to settle down with the wife. Planned it for a while before hand like.

Wouldn`t change him for the world!, it`s a real life changing experience (all for the better). Nice to get home from work and have a chat about how school went (he started on Wednesday).

To be fair I don`t think you can understand it until you actually have a child. I`m a very different person to before he was born, car comes very low down on the priorities now by my own choice as I`d rather play in the garden with him than scrape my knuckles.

I was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy at 11 years old. I decided at a pretty young age that I didn't intend to have kids. With the chances of any kids I would have contracting it being so high, I didn't want to risk it at all. After a few years, I accepted it and that biological clock never ticked.

When I first met my girlfriend, she had three childen from her previous marriage that are just fine for me. At the time they were 11, 8, and 4 (boy, girl, boy) so I missed most of the messy part, and get to enjoy the older kid thing. I think I got lucky in that aspect. Adjusting was a little bit of a chore, but I'd like to think I've done well. :)

For many years I always said I'd never have kids. Not because I don't like kids, just because I never thought I'd find someone I wanted to have kids with. Well my gf has a daughter that is a mircale baby and she is very adorable. So adorable that I basically wish that I was her daddy. The girlfirend had hinted at possibly wanting to try to have a baby boy. She didn't come right out and say it, but I knew what she meant. I told her about a dream I had where we did have a baby boy and it made her very happy.

I'm of the opinion now that if it happens, it happens. If not, then it wasn't meant to be.

Neither me nor my girlfriend want kids at all. Whether it's because we're too selfish with our own time or simply because we don't want to have to care for them is up in the air haha.

Myself, IF I ever decided I did want a kid, there are plenty of unwanted children out there, so I'd most certainly adopt.

We had our first one at 17, It was hard, but I would not trade it for the world. It made me step-up, not run away. I built my first house at 20. I own 2 now and a rental trailer at 30. We have a total of 3 kids now. Maddison is 12, Avery is 9, and Sherri-Grace is 3. I know it is hard on my wife, because I spend a good 5 Months out of the year out of town, but she loves kids. She has just gotten her certification in Early Childhood Education and at the moment is teaching at a pre-school while she looks for a permanent position at an elementary school.

I know kids are not for everyone and for me, I would have been fine with or without kids.

I've always felt that if I didn't have kids, that I'd be missing out on one of the most important and wonderful parts that life has to offer. There really isn't much that can compare to becoming a father, and I look forward to having kids...although I'm fine with waiting a couple more years (I'll be 25 next month). I feel I have a lot to do before I'm ready, as if you can ever truely be ready. For now my boys (1 year old Black Lab/1 year old Husky) are more than enough to handle.

Having a child is not that much different from owning a 3s... You know they will cost you buttloads of money. When things are going right it is an awesome time, but when things go wrong it really breaks your heart.

Children are precious, but they are a big responsibility. I personally am leaning on the side of not wanting any. I suppose my opinion could change later with the right person (or if I had an accident), but at this point in my life I feel like I honestly couldn't give a child the life it would deserve and I don't see the point in having a child, simply to have a child because its expected in our society.

Some gorgeous pics here kids. Love it. :D

It's funny at times. We'll all be out at the shops or out walking, and the kids will be playing around and then start complaining abut something, but they dont carry on. I have installed a fear in them that they do as they are told when I tell them - or else. (you know, good cop, bad cop) So they are pretty good mostly, never really get out of control. Then me and Lauren will be at the shops without the kids or getting food and we see these kids who are just fucking monsters. How did they get like that? My second thought is usually, "our boys are pretty bloody good"! lol

Chris and I are very quick to mention/thank parents who are out with well-behaved kids. Too many times it's 'monsters' (thx, Scotty!) running around with mommy 'threatening' XXX if they don't behave--tho they never carry it out.
I know that it is hard to be a parent, much less an effective one. That's why I appreciate the ones who do the hard work and do what is RIGHT for the kids, not what's easiest for them.

He had to draw for school a picture of something that make him feels good and he draw a picture of him and me named 'Friendship'! Felt so warm to my father's heart!

I hope when my daughter is 13 we are as close as you and your son. I make a point of keeping close with her.

My nephew is 3 (will be 4 in December) and is in Pre-K this year. He's a bit of a handful, even though he has been constantly corrected for the last year or more. I figured there might be issues when school started and I was right.

They have a card system for behavior. A green card is good, yellow card is "ok but could use some improvement", and a red card is "constantly misbehving, wont listen, etc"

The first day they used this system he brought home a yellow card. The second day he got a red card. I think my brother and sister-in-law shocked the teacher when they went to her and asked if he misbehaves to please communicate with them what the issues are so they can try to correct it at home with proper punishments.

He brought home another red card and the teacher explained what happened and they took some of his favorite toys off him and explained that if he is bad at school there will be consequences and if he wanted his toys back he had to be good and bring home a green card.

He has now brought home two green cards in a row.

Even the parents with the best intentions can still have a misbehaving kid, its just about how they handle the kid that matters.

Honestly, I believe our boys are good. They sometimes dont listen to their mum, but that's only because she doesn't only give them one or two chances. They get four or five before they go to their room, and even then they come straight out. If it's me, they get one maybe two chances and they stay in their rooms because they know if they come out, they are in big trouble.
When we were at the big park a month or two back, I saw a mum there with her 3 kids. The eldest (who was maybe 6 or 7) was a right little turd. Swearing and carrying on. The mum was even hitting him in public (just a smack on the back side) and he didn't give a shit. No respect for the parents is a huge problem and that's why I'm hard on our boys. So they know right from wrong.

Dude - that is an awesome story. That's the sort of thing you remember in 50 - 80 years. (if you make it that far lol)

It's funny how much kids love certain toys. It's also funny how much they dont care about certain toys....... until their brother starts playing with it. lol

Oh yes. He absolutely loves his bow. He wants to be just like his daddy. My brother shoots bow all the time to keep himself in practice for hunting and he shoots some local competitions. They found a cool toy compound bow and my nephew absolutely loves that thing.

Today he was excited about bringing home a green card. Hopefully the enthusiasm carries on.

I think all the ppl who say they don't want kids will eventually change their minds. Origionally the wife didn't want kids [I always did lol] but then as she got older and started heading towards 30 [she turned 30 today actually] she started to feel the pull. We have been trying for a long time and at this point it's going to cost us $10,000 to have kids as we will have to go through IVF. There are a few alternatives which we are trying though. I think anyone who has kids should count their blessings and consider them selves to be very lucky.

I'm 35 and Chris is 42. We still don't want kids. True, SOME people do change their mind, while others don't. I have never felt a maternal 'pull' or drive to have a child.

Best of luck on your tries. I have read a lot of stories on IVF so I wish you and your wife success.

I'm 35, best "mistake" me and wife ever made... Got married when I was 23 and we had this 5 year plan, HA. Your kids teach you something about yourself everyday.

I think the main reason I want kids is the laugh factor, it's amazing to me how a child's mind can work.

More to life than money..

there's more to life than churning out babies. funny how completely that stigma has been perpetrated across our culture.

i laugh so freaking hard when i hear people with kids who "fall on hard financial times", lose jobs, can't make ends meet, etc. maybe i'm the antichrist, but imho, if you can't be 100% certain that you can adequately provide for kids PERIOD--then you shouldn't have them. i'm far too unhappy with my own ability to achieve my dreams; adding children to the mix just relegates them to being the focal blame point for my shattered ambitions.

the only reason people should procreate, imho, is to prevent the terrorists from out-breeding us. seriously.

So only multimillionaires should have kids ? Sorry dude but the way you said that is pretty fucking disgusting. You laugh at people that have kids and then have hard times. Man I hope that makes you all warm and fuzzy inside.

i already voiced my sentiments above. i'm also against welfare; for social-darwinism; and believe that having kids doesn't entitle you to special treatment.

i am sick and tired of people and their "Woe is me" stories because of the situation they find themselves in. life sucks. if you can't live with the risk of having kids and being in a bind--don't have them. you don't deserve ANY of my money to support your misfortunes.

We can only hope you're in that same boat of non-procreators.

i suppose you win...in that case. but tell me, why would you only want the people procreating to be people who are in favor of welfare and living beyond one's own means?

In your previous post you didn't mention that they were welfare cases. I would agree with you in that mind set. But I also realize that perfectly good and responsible parents can fall on hard times, its nothing to sit back and laugh at. I am not for welfare but am strongly for neighbor helping neighbor. Judging your previous post it doesn't sound like you would help your neighbor. Maybe I am wrong.
And I dont think you should be forced by the government to help anyone. Just think you are awful self centered if you think others hard times are funny and wouldn't be willing to help them. My philosophy has always been that I will help those who help themselves. Most of us go through tough times and I am more than willing to help out others but only if they are trying to better their situation on their own as well.

i grew up in indiana. i heard endless stories about GM employees who were being laid off from their $65/hr. jobs and crying about how they were going to pay the bills. i have ZERO sympathy for people being paid disproportionately (more) than their utilized skills--especially when these people fall on hard times.

i don't ask for handouts. i didn't ask for handouts/charity when i was jobless. my education was paid for by ME. when my house flooded in 2008, I handled it. i keep money in my savings account for emergencies. i don't live with debt on my credit cards. i don't give or expect assistance. i am owed nothing; i owe nothing.

i think its funny when people are living beyond their means and fall on hard times. even IF you have a good paying job, taking that income for granted and not stocking away funds for hard-times is just stupid. in my experience, the only people that end up in a bind (kids or no kids) are the people who aren't:

1. properly managing their money and saving for emergencies

or

2. shouldn't be having kids in the first place

p.s.

i am self centered. selfish, self interested, and self centered. it is the only way to live without existing in dichotomy. it is how i must live. if this is how i am perceived on here, then i will accept it as a compliment.

Looks like you haven't changed at all. Here's the thing genius, you remember that thing your country is still currently going thru called the GEC? (global economic crisis) Have you heard any of the thousands apon thousands of stories where people who had been working for years, like 10 plus and had to be let go because the company couldn't afford to keep them on? Or what about those people who have a partner that gets sick so the other half has to quit work to be home with them to support the family? Life is never certain. I think we can put your post in with the hundreds of others that lack any clue or experience. Just stick to reviewing auto's mate. ;)

life shits on everyone. failure to plan accordingly makes you culpable...not me.

i'm sure you'll all rejoice in hearing me say this, but i'm going to say it for posterity anyway:

if i become victim of a costly illness, i will eliminate myself before i allow myself to become a drain on others. euthanasia should not only be legalized, the definition of it should be expanded to a much broader spectrum. i'm not condoning involuntary purges of certain parts of the population--but i do feel that anyone and everyone who wants to be free of the mortal coil should not be impeded from doing so of their own volition. in fact, we should offer assistance in that vein.
