the video game industry doesn't want you selling used games. i've been watching this saga unfold bit by bit & it's starting to get downright obscene.

DailyTech - Capcom's "One-Save Game" Hits "The Mercenaries 3D", Kills Potential Used Game Sales (http://www.dailytech.com/Capcoms+OneSave+Game+Hits+The+Mercenaries+3D+Kills +Potential+Used+Game+Sales/article22025.htm)

this is just one of the many stories & instances i've seen creeping more and more into the news. i don't get it. why would i want to buy a $60 game if i can't resell it for $30-40?

GM isn't bricking my sonoma, preventing me from reselling it. Paramount isn't bricking my star-trek collection, preventing me from reselling it. BMG isn't bricking my kylie minogue albums, preventing me from reslling them. so WTF are we taking this lying down when they're trying to destroy the entire idea of used game sales?

i SUBSIST on used games. or at least i have. i've also sold my share of used games too. i'm not about to pay full price for games if they're going to cost an arm & a leg. killing my ability to resell them is just icing on the cake.

i was worried that it was going to just kill pc gaming; but it's clear that the developers want to kill off everything.

i need to vent. i'm so mad i could go "postal" on the entire staff of a company like rockstar.

Its called hiding behind copyright laws...why have to make new games when there's no used game market to compete with>?

This!

Looks like my kids won't be playing video games anymore. Oh how many times have I seen someones greed be their demise. I'll never spend money on a game I can only play once.

i eagerly await the day when we finally get some legislation stipulating that whatever you buy NEW--regardless of where it originates (brick & mortar or online download), you have the right to sell it used.

i can think of no other market where "used" is being killed off (or has been killed off) and no one seems to care.

First I've heard of this. That's really sad, I was always a fan of Capcom games. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but if they keep this up, I would refuse to buy their games out of principal. I have some PS3 games that I've played many times. If I bought a game, beat it, and want to play it again 6 months later, it had damn well better let me. I can't imagine that there won't be lawsuits stemming from this practice.

I'm with Todd, the lawsuits are going to be crazy.

EA Sports is in a class action law suit for over charging for their games (that I'm actually a trivial part of, haha). It's because they don't change shit from year to year -- player names/attributes and maybe a tiny aspect of game play.

I think thats a load of shit. Its our property and we paid it. We have a right to do with it what we want. Just like with the PS3s. Fuckers. Greed will be the end of us.

technically though, all you payed for was a license to use their product in certain ways...

I really hope others don't implement this in their games. But you're right, I've been seeing game makers trying to cash-in on the used game market more and more too. One example that comes to mind is Mortal Kombat 9 and their $10-$15 one-time-use 'Online Kombat Pass.'

The only New game encouraging practice I am ok with is, Free DLC content with new games. I view that as a BOGO offer. You buy the game new, they give you free content along with it. Besides that, all other practices against the sales of used games are wrong. Forcing online subscription fees to play, single saved games, and "online passes" are going overboard. Any company that impliments these practices will only hurt their sales.

I also don't agree with paying $10-$20 buck just for one additional character and/or map for a game. Thats close to 20%-40% of the cost of the game itself for way less than 10% of the content included in the original game. I'd sooner buy another game than spend that on a DLC. In many cases to acquire all the DLC content for a game costs more than the original game.

That doesn't hold water. A license refers to permission AND the document that grants that permission. You're not paying for a license to play a video game as a singular person/entity; nor are you leasing the game indicating a guaranteed return to the seller at some later date. The only licensing that is remotely attached in this instance is the lack of right to disseminate. Still, that is not a license per se, that is a restriction that is acknowledged when you take ownership. This nonsense won't last, it's absolutely absurd.

Both actually..... I don't know a single person that listens to her..... kind of like Fosters beer.... no-one in Australia actually drinks that crap.

must be because it's overplayed/overhyped. kylie gets no airplay over here; so it has a bit more appeal. conversely, i can't stand rihanna. i love "the who" songs that rarely get played on the radio. i can't stand "who are you", "baba o'riley" etc.

what can i say, i was 9 when i first heard kylie's music; i've been hooked ever since. seeing her in "bio-dome" and "street fighter" certainly didn't curb my enthusiasm either. she's one of VERY few artists i'll actually buy full albums of. (indigenous, rockapella, betty blowtorch, are some other).

/hijack. focus back on consumer rights being flushed.

It will fail because the hacking community will figure out how to defeat the One Play feature. Hard core gamers will seek hacked versions. Casual gamers won't care as they never complete games anyway :lo5l:

yes. two threads. the other one is the "well, FML" thread.

this one--constrained solely to this one topic--is more of a "i'm so mad i would stab babies in the face" thread.

Now for something a little more serious...

I'm surprised nobody here is complaining about game developers trying to kill the mod community. Seriously guys, COD4 had some awesome mods...and what does Activision do? Bring in Steam and get rid of dedicated servers...I now refuse to buy another cod game :P

Good news though. Unreal is still giving out the Unreal Development Kit for free! There may still be freedom from all these restrictions from the basement game designers.

...and yes I'm slowly trying to put something together with it.

Unreal was an unreal game. Only recently got around to playing and completing Unreal 2. Playing Farcry at the moment. Got Farcry 2 ready for when I complete the 1st one. I'm always so far behind in gaming. But it does mean I get them cheap

aida is hot. :p

in all seriousness though, ut2k4 had me addicted for YEARS. mostly due to bonus content from private developers (non-official add-ons). i can see this becoming a less and less fruitful genre as companies cling to more and more draconian policies.
