I've been making playlists of favorite songs from my accumulated crap, and I've always culled my personal favorites from those songs that others might regard as of less-than-stellar commercial value - minor hits, album gems, personal faves - stuff that never ever (EVER) plays on top-40 type radio.

I always wonder how others find these types of songs.

Anyway, I'm off to find a link that probably doesn't exist, a link to my first submission:

Fool (not The Fool and Me), by Robin Trower - with a fantastic blues vocal by James Dewar (an all-time great, to me).

You won't find too many people that remember that one when it got it's 2 weeks of radio play back in the early 80's, but it's a great song with some really good musicians.

i like what i like. there's no rhyme or reason to it. rhythm has a LOT to do with whether or not i like something.

pick a genre & i can share some of my favorites. my tastes are far too ecclectic to "fit" in any one area.

Now there's a good choice, Thadd.

My point would be (now that you've helped me out by using the word "eclectic" to refer to your musical tastes) that no one listens to 'only' Top 40 - that would almost be impossible.

Edit:

Athena (love the song), from the same album as Eminence Front, doesn't make the cut, because it got some big radio play.

even IF a song got some good radio-play back in the day, most of the ones i listen to have fallen off the radar.

examples:

"damn i wish i was your lover" - sophie b hawkins
"never been to spain" - three dog night
"i wanna be rich" - calloway
"high enough" - damn yankees
"are you jimmy ray" - jimmy ray
"amnesia" - chumbawumba
"making love like a man" - def leppard
"godzilla" - BOC
"freedom 90" - george michael
"in the closet" - michael jackson
"life is a highway" - tom cochrane
"hey jealousy" - gin blossoms
"2 princes" - spin doctors
"bicycle race" - queen
"hey pretty" - poe
"c'mon suzie" - indigenous

i mean the list goes on & on. i'll also listen to anything firehouse ever sang. or kylie. or betty blowtorch. or rockapella. or kc& the sunshine band. my music collection is replete with songs you forgot existed; but you'd instantly recognize.

"don't walk away" - jade

i've got a LOT of stuff from "the golden age of rap/hip-hop": 1988-1993

I have their first album - Eddie Van Halen threw it to me from the hay-wagon they were playing on at the Roswell Village, north of Atlanta....free concert for the March of Dimes, back in the day - they were brand new, and the line-up that day included Foreigner, The Cars, Nantucket, The Outlaws, and a few others.

I got free tickets to see them with Joe Cocker back around 2000 and The Guess Who were really good with singer/keyboardist Burton Cummings sounding great. Cummings and Bachman do not have the rights to the name Guess Who so you want to look for the Cummings-Bachman band instead.

That's funny, because Bachman Turner Overdrive had similar problems years ago. There was a band touring as Bachman Turner Overdrive and another touring as BTO. I don't remember who was in which band, but it was actually Randy Bachman's brothers that formed the competing bands.

I saw Danny Gatton way back when, in Baltimore - he played in the house band at Gallagher's in DC, as I recall, where my buddy bartended while he was going to UV.

Here he is on ACL:

I love the Doors.
If you watch the movie you can understand more about them.
Another example of "Do they die young because the live hard or do they live hard because they die young"
I dated someone like that...Loved him with all my heart but knew he was like a falling star. Burn bright and quickly pass.

I love the Doors. Even though I like more Zeppelin songs (because they put out a lot more), the Doors are my favorite classic rock band.

Welcome, Jeremy.

I heard him first back in '78 when I was visiting a friend at Macalester College in Minnesota.

Couldn't believe what I was hearing - gave me a headache trying to listen coherently, if that makes any sense. :)

A while later he developed a hand ailment that took him a long time to recover from, and he had to totally rebuild his playing style.

The guy is beyond amazing.

He gets up my way fairly often, playing at NMU in Marquette and the Calumet Theater.
