View Full Version : FWD ATX Swap - What seals/parts should I replace?

Back story: Car has been down for a few months. ATX took a major dump in my driveway, fluid everywhere. I got another ATX and Torque Conveter with 10k on it, but it sat for a few years. None the less, the replacement ATX seems to be in pretty good condition.

Since the ATX will be out, I plan on replacing the rear main crank seal (bought it a while ago, never changed it).

Either this weekend or next I'm going to start swapping everything. I''m wondering what seals/parts are recommended to replace while the Trans is out?

clutch packs, end clutch & adding a shift kit to the valve body.

i found a shift kit on the IPT website. Most likely will purchase it this paycheck. If i follow the videos on the IPT site, I should be able to do this myself. Doesn't look to difficult

Here's another question. When you mensioned the clutch packs and end clutch, did you mean I should upgrade these or replace them with OEM?
If its a OEM replacement, do I really need it? The ATX and TorqC was factory rebuilt and only has 10k since the rebuild. Are you recommending the replacement of these parts because the ATX sat for a few years?

the OEM end clutch is a big weak-point in the transmission. replacing those pieces is always a good idea--if you're already "in there". the clutch packs from IPT (and most other trans part mfgs) are actually superior to OEM, and offer better clamping for reduced wear.

I wouldn't replace the end clutch until it goes bad. Why replace good parts with other good parts?

I would check the input shaft seal and axle seals. Replace those if necessary. Do a filter/pan gasket change while doing the shift kit.

I cant find input shaft seals or axle seals on the IPT site. Do they sell these individually or do you have to by the master rebuild kit to get them?

Does anyone have parts numbers for these?

While you're at it, you should throw on an external filter housing and transmission cooler.

Any auto parts store will have them.

I'm having problems finding input shaft seals and axle seals.
I've Searched RockAuto/Napa/Autozone/AdvanceAuto, and turned up no results for input shaft seal or axle seals
But did find torque converter seal and output seals.

Does
Torque Converter Seal = Input Shaft Seal ?????
Output Shaft Seal = Axle Seals ?????

nevermind. I got my answer. I need 1 torque converter seal and 2 output shaft seals.

So here is my list so far

Replacement parts
- 1 Rear Main Bearing
- 1 torque converter seal
- 2 output shaft seals
- 2 filters (extra filter for flushing)
- 1 pan gasket

Upgrades (Later Date)
- shift kit
- trans cooler

Can the upgrades I have listed be done after the install of the ATX or does the ATX have to be out? The reason I'm not doing them at the same time is cost. Got to many bills to pay this paycheck. But i can get them on my next paycheck.

The upgrades can be done with the trans in. You'll have to drain the fluid to get the valve body out of the trans to install the shift kit, but that's pretty easy.
