Hello!
I look forward to joining the forums. I've owned a '92 VR-4 for about 10 years now (it threw an engine rod at 134K about 6 years ago), and it's time for me to start a massive, complete rebuild of the car.
Thank you!

I have a 98 vr4, and was following Greg E's thread over from the 3si site to here. This is my first time over on this forum, have followed the 'other' 3s forum for 7 years. I'm interested in tuning the ECU with ecuflash and evoscan on my 98. Thanks.

Hey, my names Jared and i just traded a non running 240sx for the first front wheel drive car i have ever owned. And sadly, it is probly the largest but fastest car i have owned. I'll be honest, i hate front wheel drives. But i love my new car. It is a 1992 3000gt SL with 20k miles on a new engine (169k on body) it is the original Glacier Pearl White and has ZERO bondo. in a few years this car will be "vr4 swapped" with block off plates to the front wheels. (making it RWD) and it will be in D1 drift events. Thanks.

While I'd normally call you grumpy for a discouraging initial post. Time time you are right. As Brett proved Using a 3S AWD converted to RWD the car is slower than stock. I highly doubt the T case could hold enough power to make the car fast in a RWD configuration.

Not only that but I doubt the t-case would withstand the abuse of drifting.

Umm ok...
That was different.
Nice to be in a place
that is about the Cars
and owners.
I have had a mixed
experience with the
3S community some
cool people and some
people I just could
not seem to understand.
Either way with me It's
about the cars and learning
how to work on them,
something I have yet to do.

Hello,
I come from 3si.org, and my user name is the same registered on this site. I have been a member of 3si.org since 2004, and decided to be a member of this site to stay in touch with all 3S enthusiasts. For me, it feels that the community has been split in half between this site and 3si.org. But in order to keep in touch with all members and 3S owners, I believe being a member of both forums builds a bridge for me to contribute to this growing platform.

Amusing videos.
Hi, I'm saving 10K for a 91-93 first gen VR-4 and plan to put another 7K into performance mods and a paint job. The performance mods will include an apexi controller which I will use to add hp and turn the boost up to 15 psi, an intake, a turbo downpipe, a high flow cat, a borla turbo exhaust, msd wires, ngk iridium plugs, weight reduction will include: lightweight 18" racing rims with potenza's a carbon fiber drive shaft, a lightweight flywheel, a lightweight clutch that can handle more power, a carbon fiber hood, a lightweight battery and I will be taking out the spare tire, jack and tools. I have a few questions. About how much bhp and whp can I expect with this setup? About how much weight will I take off? Can the engine and turbos handle 15 psi? Will it make too much power for a 2 bolt main car? And finally what's this I'm hearing about a new 3000GT coming out soon that would be awesome?
you'll get a lot more bang for the buck if you upgrade the turbos & add supporting mods--rather than trying to lighten the car; at least at first. 1g's are going for ~$5,000 for good ones--way less for beat ones. you can find 2g's for under 10k regularly. 7k isn't a lot for performance mods AND a paint job--since a quality paint job will run you ~4 grand alone. 15 psi on stock 9b's is probably not possible for most cars unless they're running alky/meth; and again, you're better off upgrading the turbos if you want more power.
you add together the cost of a new downpipe, cf driveshaft, flywheel, cf hood, intake...and you can easily buy a better set of bolt-on turbos. not to say that those parts won't help a bit--but you're talking about a big difference in power. stock 1g vr4 can probably run 12 flat 1/4 with mostly full interior and some lightweight parts to boot (pump gas). that same 1g vr4 with no lightweight parts & some 13t's & supporting mods can probably hit low-mid 11's (also pump gas). long story short--put money in faster parts before you spend money on making your existing setup faster.
2-bolts will hold the power. there are no recorded instances of td-04's "overpowering" a stock 2-bolt--and even if you did push it, you can buy a stud-kit to solve that problem. 4-bolts are only a "requirement" for people trying to build strokers.
there is no new 3000gt, as brian said.

By the way, I actually found this forum using the iPhone app Tapatalk and I was looking for 3SI (just registered yesterday). I'm glad I did find this site because I could tell already that this community is pretty helpful and engaging.
4k for a paint job jeez my dumbass dad told me about 1000
if you do all the work yourself, you can probably do it for around a grand. if you are having a PROFESSIONAL shop do it, 4k is a fair price. if you need some body work done, the price might be even higher. you really do tend to get what you pay for. you have to shell out more if you don't want orange peel, etc.

4k for a paint job jeez my dumbass dad told me about 1000
Materials alone are going to run around $1000. For a quality job it is easily $3000. For a color change, add another $1000-$2000.

Hi everybody. New to this forum but not forums in general. I just bought a 1997 VR-4 back in August and in my absence from this community since 2008 found that 3si is now worthless... Anyway I'm a tech for Subaru here in Aurora, CO and have loved these cars since my 95 Stealth RT/TT in 2007. I decided it was time for me to purchase one again now that I am out of college and can actually afford the maintenance.

I'm just about to put my '91 RT/TT back on the road. It sat while I was overseas and my Dad stopped driving it when he got a 2010 SRT Challenger. Last time we tried it had the bucking under medium load and I didn't know what to do to cure it, so it looks like MAP, ECU, fuel pump troubleshooting are in order. The gas has been in it for around 2 years which scares me, but my Dad and his mechanic say it shouldn't be a problem. We did load it up with Stabil, but I'll try to sniff if it smells bad before I try it again.
HilbillyHomeboy
11-02-2012, 06:36 PM
Make sure you check the ECU. The 1st generation cars are notorious for them going bad. Typically will have a fishy smell, if you can't see obvious capacitor damage.
Sitting that long, you'll need to inspect everything.

Hey all... Not sure If anyone here remembers me but back in the mid 2000s I was an avid post whore on 3si and proud owner of a beautiful 94 stealth tt and 92 sandstone vr4 project that i unfortunately had to part out. Then I lost my job at altered atmosphere for standing up to the owner for being... well i think we all know how that story ends... and had to sell my car. I hung around 3si for a while after getting into the LS1 crowd, and even restored a wrecked vr4 amongst my other projects, which I also had to sell. Then marriage happened... and I had to sell all the rest of my toys... fast forward 7 years and I've been happilly divorced for several years, been gainfully employed in LE, and have been dating an awesome woman who to my surprise actually encouraged me to buy my dream car when it popped up for sale on 3si recently. This is the car i will likely be purchasing in a few weeks...

Originally owned by TomWatson and currently being sold to me by Blitzkid on 3si. Normally I wouldn't talk about things before they happen but the deposit is sent and everything is in motion. I am just so excited to be getting back into my childhood dream car that was seemingly stolen out from under me. To find this 38k mile gem seemed like a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Anyways, I got back on the forum looking for familiar faces, noticed Alan, the old staple of our community was banned, and instantly tried to figure out what happened. He was always so good to us, even the young immature rookies of the day (myself included). Well after some digging I more or less figured out what happened while dissapointed, was ecstatic to find this site. Thanks Alan for staying true to the community... it wouldn't be the same without you.
Anyways, I look forward to getting back into the platform and this site. After nearly 10 years of searching, I've finally found my dream car, and dream girl to support my addiction. Heres to a new generation of 3/S infatuation!

Hello.
My name is Josh. I have a 92 VR4. Bought it not running. I have assembled a new motor with forged crank, forged Brian Crower rods and forged pistons. Rebuilt both turbos and just this weekend tore into the 5 speed to replace the output shaft with a hardened one. Should have the motor back in this coming weekend. I can't wait to actually dirve the car I have owned for almost 5 months.

Hello,
My name is Richard AKA AlbeUrDemise. I recently bought a 1992 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL 5spd. All Stock. I've had it about two weeks now and I love it. I recently had an eclipse and although I like the style of the car, I hated it's lack of power even with a turbo upgrade. So I realized it just wasn't for me. My friend GoodWrench3000 has had a 3000GT for years and it's always been his dream car. So he talked me into getting into one. So far I am very satisfied and can't wait to get it modified. Anyway that's enough rant for now. Time to get to work.

1. modified < reliable. get it up to spec before you start messing around with it--or you now have a 3200lbs gift for a junkyard.
2. if you didn't like the power levels of a turbocharged eclipse, you're going to hate n/a 3/s. my advice is to sell it now and buy a vr4.

I have a 95 3000 SL that I just finished painting back to original R71 color. I did this in my homemade bisqayne paint booth held together by poles and 3m adhesive spray. I am still wet sanding the clear when I get time.
I am 59 yoa and I love to drive this car. I am thinking of adding a aftermarket turbo.
The reason I joined the forum is to seek assistance with the power door locks. They quit, but the fuses are good...
Thanks,

Already plan for weight reduction and a TT setup and already have steal on a TT system out of a VR4 with ECU Etc... For $350 Locally.
PS. The power of the Turbo Eclipse was fine for that car but It just wasn't worth it considering how much $$$ it took to get it on that lvl. Hence why I hated the Money Pitt! At least 3K hold some value still because of rarity.

now you've lost me. DSM's are dirt cheap to mod. tons of people are upgrading all the time, and the parts from their previous setups are always going for discounts. a 16g dsm shouldn't be breaking the bank at all--and if it is, you really don't want to own a 3/s.
p.s.
3/s's don't have any "rarity" factor helping resale value. you should shop around more.

If you think DSM's are expensive to mod, they you are in for a rude awakening in the 3s game. A DSM can run 11's for under a grand.

Hello .. New to the site and car .. Growing up my moms friend purchased a 92 red stealth and I always wanted one .. I been in mustangs the last 17 years right down to my 2012 gt which I loved and have built many from the ground up ... Then traded for a 2012 f150 cause I needed something for my first born .... Well now I'm wanting a Awd sports car and a GTR is out my budget lol ... So now to my childhood car .. I am looking for a good black 1993 stealth TT.... I just don't want the first year or two bugs so I'm starting there. I like the flip up lights too ...
Couple questions . I do plan to mod it and get around 500whp ..
I see people say swap out lifters and such for reliability .. I'm just looking for a direction and learn the car and the parts .. Thanks in advance for the help too ..
I also not sure if there is a 5sp or 6sp manual ?? I thought all were 6sp manuals..
What can the factory drive train and motor handle safely ?

Welcome to the community man. You might find some better responses by starting a fresh thread (or searching), but to give you a few quick answers:
The problem you've probably heard about the lifters on our car is that they're known to tick (known, suitably, as 'lifter tick'). It's not that they're unreliable, just that they can be loud. Many people opt for replacement 1999 (3rd gen) lifters.
I also not sure if there is a 5sp or 6sp manual ?? I thought all were 6sp manuals..
Our cars have come in both 5sp and 6sp. The 6 speed manual was introduced for the RT/TT and VR4 in 1994 and was maintained through the rest of the run (1996 for the Stealth and 1999 for the 3000GT).
.. I'm just looking for a direction and learn the car and the parts .. Thanks in advance for the help too ..
You've come to the right place!!
You might also want to check out stealth316.com (http://www.stealth316.com) and 3swiki.org (http://www.3swiki.org). Good luck!

First post, so here goes nothing... I'm Kyle, I'm currently building a 1g GTO, and at the moment taking care of all the glitches that come with this beast of a mini super car. I've done the 120k service, oil pump, fresh tune up, new isc, and put a couple of oil changes of redline 10w40 synthetic through(as well as a shock proof fluid swap for the TC. (Taking care of the carrier bearings, window regulators, and fuel pump right away) Performance mods are minimal, and all came on from the PO of my car. Turbo back exhaust, come style air filter, Tein coil overs, and advan wheels. The manual in cabin boost controller was me though, as well as the vacuum reduction mod, and the triple guage setup above the single din stereo was me as well. I want to build something around the 400 horse mark, reliable, and I need more information than just "the other site" can provide. I need to tune this beast, and I think this is the place to go for what I need. I'm thinking 99 (clone) ecu and I hear this is the place to go for the information. So thank you in advance!
Kyle

Hello all!
Purchased a 97 GTO TT (Red with black leather interior and sunroof) 6 months ago and had my first track day in it in Dec in Taupo. Fantastic.
Wanting to see if I can get one of the lcdbc's off Blackstealth. Fantastic bit of kit.
Cheers

Hi, my name is Fabian from south California. Own a 94 black 3s SL.
Hi,
Just bought a black 1991 mk 1 TT. It was quite difficult to find one that hadn't been modifed at all so very pleased. I do intend to make some changes: new alloys and custom leather seats. But not intending to change engine/transmission/suspension. But who knows, may change my mind in the future.

What's up everyone! Just bought a 92 vr4 for a project. Wanted one since 1991, finally bought one. :) Not sure if I want to go just put it back to stock (it's lightly modded right now) or go for higher horsepower, we'll see. :)

Hello! I'm new to this forum. I now own a 1999 3000GT VR-4 (white). I bought it last spring from a gentleman who kept it pretty much stock. My first one was a 1998 3000GT (Base). It was my daily driver from 2004 to 2012. It had about 210,000 miles on it when I finally sold it last spring. I really like the AWD in my new 3000GT on these snowy Montana roads. I belong to three other 3000GT/Stealth forums and enjoy reading about other owners' experiences.

Hello all, just getting back into the 3/S game. After selling my 95 Vr-4 a few years ago i've had to live with that regret ever since... Well that is no longer the case. I recently purchased a 1993 VR-4 Rolling chassis and am going to be doing a full restoration/rebuild. This is a project that i intend to take my time with so the car probably wont see the road for at least another year maybe 2 but thats 90% of the fun right?

Hi all,
I have a 1992 Dodge Stealth R/T TT that I am restoring. It’s in good to excellent shape so most of the work I am doing right now is cosmetic but I do see some engine mods in the future!

Loving the site. I currently own an MR2 Turbo, lifted 93 Toyota pickup, 91 TSi AWD, and an Evo VIII. I remember my mom's boss's Stealth R/T TT making a big impression on me when I was really young and I've wanted one ever since. I'm looking forward to learning more about these cars and picking one up once I find the right one.

Hello all. Old time 3si.org member since 2002 but I've been off the forums for awhile as my 94TT has been under wraps in my garage for the last several years. I finally pulled the covers off and am undertaking a full rebuild so figured it's time to jump back on the forums.

I have to agree with IPD. No point in buying a FWD NA just to AWD TT swap it. Its one thing if you bought the car 10 years ago and have an emotional attachment to it. Its another to do all sorts of extra work that will cost you more than you could have bought the AWD TT for in the first place.
