View Full Version : time for a new mouse

ok here's the deal. i've been using a $20 laser mouse for 2 years, and i've been happy with it. problem is, i apparently live with a bat/dolphin hybrid that can hear me blink my eyes....from 3 states away.

so i needs me a new mouse, one that still has laser function, with a good tactile feedback, but without the "click" noise.

any suggestions?

Save your wrist, get a logitech lazer trackball

So do I. They making gaming trackballs. Mine is a logitech laser style, 4 buttons, and the ball is in the center so you left click with your thumb and right click with your ring finger. Pointer and middle fling the ball. Its a very simple high performance set up. I'm not asking you to switch a mac or anything

besides the obvious difference in control, i use a 5 button mouse, so switching to a trackball actually would offer less functionality.

no...it's a gamer thing. non-gamers don't give a shit, and are usually happy with a touchpad.

5-function laser mouse is what i need. i've tried optical mice & they all suck. i've tried using trackballs, and i have a harder time trying to get fine motor control from a trackball. besides, a 5 function mouse has 7 mappable keys--in addition to the look aspect. that's way more versatility than pretty much anything else.

Like I said, a guy thing :p.

Wouldn't it be cheaper if you just bought your room mate some ear plugs?

i wish earplugs would work...but not, that's not going to solve this problem.

p.s.
april, i'm surprised at you. sweeping generalizations about gaming being a "guy thing" are so cliche.

Come on now, we all know probably 90% or more of serious gamers are guys.

....not that serious gamers play farmville or wow...but there are a LOT of women that play those.

Nope, don't do farmville/WOW/Mafia Wars... or anything that requires a decent internet connection. I'm on satellite internet, which can be described as dial-up on steroids basically.

Actually I haven't played an actual video game of any kind in years. Our PS3 came with a game, that I probably played 20 min and got bored. Yes we have a PS3 because it was the cheapest blu ray DVD player back in the day.

The only game I ever got into was the first SOCOM.

I find better things to do with my time than play video games. I live in the boondocks, so there are plenty of things to do. Or I will go downstairs and polish a plenum :D

lol. i like how they call it "plum crazy". anyone who knows anything about prowlers knows that color is "prowler purple". plum crazy is quite a bit brighter and more vibrant than prowler purple.

p.s.
think i can fit an ecoboost v6 in it? :suspect:

IPD

thanks marshall, but i don't see silent specs on either of those. besides, the first one is optical; the 2nd is wireless (i prefer wired).

Well you don't need to look at the mouse when you are using it... why not build some kind of box. I don't think they make a silent mouse to your specifications.

Ecoboost engine, isn't that a ford engine... that would just be epic fail

Yeah I am more of a purest... Chevy engines belong in a chevy and ford engines belong in a ford... blah blah blah...

But if you must, might as well go all out with a VTec

thanks. yes, i already put tape inside the switches to muffle the noise--and it does work. what irritates me is the lack of tactile feel. i wish that someone would make a mouse with buttons like a game controller. fairly silent, great tactile response.

i've no idea how the shitty xbox controllers work, but all of my nintendo controllers since the NES have used the same rubber-button format. they do make noise, but not like a traditional mouse. a little extra finesse & they could be made silent.

Anyone know of a laser track ball where you move the ball with your thumb instead of pointer? I have a non laser track ball in this design and it is amazing for FPS. I've tried to switch to the more common pointer controlled balls, but my accuracy is much lower.

This is the 5-button laser mouse I use, but it is definitely not a silent mouse.

I've used a trackball before when gaming over at a friend's house. It takes a lot of getting used to. It felt a lot better by the time I got some experience with it but it still didn't feel comfortable. A regular mouse is much less physically taxing IMO.

Speaking from experience, there is no escaping the wrath of a wife. I swear mine can hear me clicking from miles away on the off chance I decide to play some games!

Her: "Are you playing that STUPID game again?!?!"

Me: "Oh God, please don't hurt me!!!"

trackballs with the thumb as the ball = fail

this is mine
Newegg.com - Logitech Trackman Marble Gray USB Wired Optical Mouse (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104249&cm_re=trackball-_-26-104-249-_-Product)

very simple easy to use, i never get wrist fatigue. the only thing i dont like about it is the no scroll wheel...

however,

its not very silent so it doesn't fit the OPs requests.

a simple newegg search returned this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826611001&cm_re=silent_mouse-_-26-611-001-_-Product

and hey, its even labeled as a silent mouse lol

and if you need that mouse in a 5 button variant:

macs are for babies.

I use these two.

FPS
Newegg.com - RAZER Mamba Black 7 Buttons USB Laser Gaming Mouse - Dual Mode Wired/Wireless Functionality (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826153048)

MMORPG
Newegg.com - RAZER Naga Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming Mouse (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826153054)

I prefer wired mice though, I mentally think wireless mice don't respond fast enough for my liking.

IPD

same. wired> wireless. i liked wireless when they first came out...but i'm not a fan. definitely not for gaming.
