Well I知 bored so I might as well start this thread. I have decided to do the AWD conversion and also build the engine while I知 at it. Bad blow by is causing problems with turbos so I知 just going to go ahead and go 8:1. I have been talking about doing the AWD conversion for > two years now and collecting parts here and there when I found a good deal. I wanted to start this quite a while back but buying/selling a house and some other stuff has kept me from doing it. I plan on taking my time with this build/conversion but having it done and tuned before NG. This will be pic heavy and I plan on documenting pretty much everything. Hopefully it will move pretty quickly but I will probably only be able to work on weekends if I don稚 have any other things going on. Wish me luck!

Thanks to shooter83 (Evan) for threads like the one day AWD Conversion (http://www.3si.org/forum/f1/one-day-awd-conversion-finished-lots-pics-449870/) and all the others (http://www.3si.org/forum/f117/fwd-awd-converted-cars-how-many-there-now-447874/) that have shared their information.

Not much to report, I spent most of the day finding the right combo of tools to remove this fwd stuff (PITA). I'm sure the other side will come off much easier now that I know a good way to do it. The cold weather doesn't help much for my motivation. :lol3:

I hope to have the old engine out today. I need the bolts for the flywheel and clutch so I can have them balanced with the engine.

How to keep a motor mount from walking

When I got this mount the center metal sleeve was a little loose and the poly insert could be pushed around some when it was cold. This is how I fixed that.

Find some thick pipe that closely fits the OD of the motor mount metal sleeve. Mark and cut so it will be flush with the sleeve. I cut them a little thick then ground them down to fit.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o310/hptech4564/AWD%20conversion/DSCF8063.jpg

^ 3SX Pen plug! send me free stuff guys! ^

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o310/hptech4564/AWD%20conversion/DSCF8064.jpg

Wrap the sleeve in some electrical tape to take up any room between the OD of the sleeve and the ID of the pipe so they fit snug and don’t rattle.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o310/hptech4564/AWD%20conversion/DSCF8071.jpg

Then just drill some holes and put in some good screws.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o310/hptech4564/AWD%20conversion/DSCF8073.jpg

That should work

Sorry I haven’t updated this thread lately but pretty much all my spare time has been working on the car.

From lack of proper tools I was dreading pulling the races in and out to shim the trans. The only thing I needed to check was the diff because I'm installing a modified OBX LSD. I like to make things as easy as posible. I decided to use new bearings on it so I took the old race and ground down the sides so I could pull it in and out very easy without tearing up the seal or heat the casing ect. I know there could be a slight difference in the old race and new but apparently not enough to worry about because it came out almost perfect. Congrats to OBX for building it to the right size.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o310/hptech4564/DSCF8330.jpg

Like I said anything to make it easier. :D

Yes, casing in the oven and races in the freezer.

When you get a chance to really test it, How is performance, any loss? I am sure it is hard to tell with the TT/rebuild.
I am thinking since i have the N/A and non awd, that i might be better off just going out and finding a stock awd......

Thanks guys! The AWD does slow it down a little as in hwy pulls but with the LSD and AWD on waste gate pressure I couldn't get it to spin in the rain. It really hooks up for sure. When it was FWD 10:1 TT it really was fast as hell on the hwy but now that I'm 8:1 I'll make up with for it with higher boost.

Since I've had it on the road I've had it on the dragon (did great) and the dyno. When I had it on the dyno it put down 292 on just 9-10psi. I was happy with that and started turning up the boost a little but that's where the fun ended with the LMI turbos. On the 2nd pull they (it) blew. Fun's over! Not that I was surprised but it still was a bummer.

Green, I am considering doing a TT conversion. I just read that you were running on a 10:1, which turbos? How much boost? I have read multiple posts about this but just wanted another person that has done it's response. :D
Maybe I should start a AWD parts list and do it myself as you have.

Well I’m not 10:1 anymore but it was before this build. With 10:1 you cant really run more than about 8psi without meth, race gas or e85 so stock turbos are fine. You do get more bang for your boost with 10:1 though. I didn’t have a LSD so trying to launch was a joke. I really didn’t have all that much traction in 3rd gear lol. If you do a TT conversion just make sure you research a lot and do it right. People cut corners and end up having troubles or screwing up their engine quite often. If you don’t have a back up car I wouldn’t do this because you’re making the car less reliable and you don’t want to drive it if there are bugs to be worked out. Also if you aren’t pretty mechanically inclined you might want to just save for a VR4 but if you are a TT FWD can be a lot of fun.

Awesome write-up! I didn't know you finished this. SO happy to see it all together!

Thanks bro, yeah I finished about a week before BRG. Those damn LMI turbos blew pretty quickly though so I’ve been down over a month. I’m going to pick up some 19t’s or DR750’s here pretty soon. The LMI turbo blew so bad I lost about 3 quarts of oil from the dyno to about 2 blocks away. I hope they didn’t cause any other issues with my new engine.

What are your mods on the 291 awhp dyno numbers? LMI 16t's, FMIC, BC @ 9-10 psi, intake/exhuast?

I have 16t's @ 9 psi on an otherwise bone stock VR4 and It pulls about as hard as a full BPU 9B car running 13-14 psi. Basically, Im trying to get an estimate of what I really am making. I think Im right about 265-270 but I need dyno time to know for sure obviously

green-lantern

Here are some of my mods. I don't really keep up with them unfortunately. I just got a quick list together for COTM. I have done other stuff like gut pecats.

Four bolt block
Wiseco pistons
Spool H beam rods
FMIC and hard pipe kit
Koyo radiator
Fidanza cam gears
Fidanza flywheel
Spec stage 4+ clutch
IPO fuel pressure kit
hot wired walbro
AEM wideband
Scanmaster 3
Greddy EBC
Greddy Emanage blue
16t’s soon to be 19t turbos
Adjustable control arms
AWS delete
3SX polly mounts
SS exhaust
Rebuilt 6 speed trans
OBX LSD (reworked by me)

Here is my garage

http://www.3sgto.org/garage_vehicle.php?do=view_vehicle&id=2

I'd say you might be a little high on your numbers but not too far off. I was on a pretty stingy Dyno. I think my buddy's very close to stock stealth TT with 200,000 on the clock did around 220.

I guess I should update this thread.

I have the 19t's mounted but due to a member here I now don't trust my custom oil return lines so I'm going to pull them off and go with stock. I have started the car and fooled a little with the tune (just idle). I hope to have them changed in time for the snow we are supposed to have

Which lines did you have?

I bought them from a local TN member but they don't appear to be any smaller than most popular aftermarket brands. They are however much smaller than stock. I've done some digging and asked people on another website I'm on and I'm not going to use them anymore. I plan on designing my own but now stock is the way to go for me. If you are running aftermarket and having smoking issues then I'd suggest changing them. I'll elaborate more later.

yeah I might be a little high. Maybe 250 is more likely. I plan on adding a walbro and running 13 psi this winter. Maybe a Sure-Win Exhaust since they are out there so cheap now. That should get closer to 300whp.

What do you think about a cutout? I drive 15k/yr DDing the VR4 and I like the quiet/non droning sound on the highway, but I want to help out the power. I thought about a DP and E cutout?

your build list is basically what I want, minus the built engine/trans, Emanage, and 19T's (substitute Fresh long block/stock trans/braced Xfer, 16T's, Blow Thru MAFT/SAFC2)

END thread jack. Maybe Ill PM you and not clutter up your thread.

Sorry I haven't elaborated sooner. The custom lines are just way smaller than stock. There is usually a good bit of air in the stock lines while in the custom ones there isn't. I think the oil is more forced out of the smaller lines so when pressure builds up in the crankcase it can put too much pressure on the turbo seals. The stock ones have a bunch of room in them so if you get some gases back through them the air can compress and if it pushes through the seals it isn't a line full of oil it's just some air. This isn't a technical explanation but just some of the issues I've been checking into. Ether way they are WAY smaller so it can't be a good thing.

Mike VR3.9 has one and he seems to like it a lot. I think he had some good HP numbers to back it up also.

Just thought I’d give a little update on my car. The machine shop didn’t seat the VSS well enough so some started coming off the guide and causing the car to smoke. So I had to replace them and while I was at it I did some other stuff like new O2 sensors and installed the new EBC/scan tool. Got the car running great but I guess I got in too big of a hurry and didn’t tighten the timing tensioner pulley down well enough. I started hearing a noise coming from the engine, pulled over and popped the hood. Since I can’t run timing covers I could see the belt flopping around so shut it down immediately. :( It was pretty disheartening to say the least.

Saturday I got the tension back on the belt and rotated it around to TDC. The rear bank wasn’t off by much if any at all but the front was pretty far off (intake cam). Sunday I set the timing back correctly and compression test was all 150-160 except cylinder #3 was down to 125. Did a leak down test and could hear air coming from the intake. So pulled the head and tested the valves via diesel fuel. Looks like I got pretty lucky and only bent one valve. I thought I’d at least have 2 bent but nope, just one. I was able to take a valve from a spare head and it sealed better than the valves in the cyl that had 160 in the compression check. I was pretty happy about that!

I guess all and all I was pretty lucky considering I got careless and in a hurry with the timing belt. I’m not going to make that mistake again. I could have got away with just setting the timing and running it but 125 was just too far off for my comfort and I do plan to race the car. I might be able to have it back together today or tomorrow.

yes! Almost every time I've heard of this happening it usually means heads being rebuilt at the least. I know for the most part running timing belt covers is a good idea but in this case I knew exactly what it was at 1st glance and shut it off. I'm lucky as hell to have only one valve bent.

I can't wait to see this build in person again. I'm glad the timing issue didn't cause any major engine damage. I'd love to run without covers myself just for the look of it, but I fear small rocks and stuff like that. I guess in your case since you can't, it was indeed a life (motor) saver!

Wow, you came a long way from asking me conversion questions, while we were in the little cramped garage drinking beer and talking about hotwings. :) I'm sad I never got to take a ride with the N/A turboed engine, I always imagined it being a bit torquey. The digital display on the RPM indicator is pretty trick, I love that front I/C pipe too, my factory peice doesn't fit correctly with my 2 core. I have to figure out my car now so I can come see the car paul.

It’s been a long road my friend. The 10:1 TT was a beast for sure. It was a lot of fun to drive but no traction does get old.

What do you need to do to your car? Get it going and I’ll have a mini meet. I’m due for a chill and grill anyway.

Awesome build man! Cant say I'm surprised about the LMI turbos blowing lol. We've had a bunch of people send their "almost new" blown LMI turbos in for complete rebuilds.

Good catch on the timing belt! Wow that could have been really devestating!

Yeah I lucked out on the TB. I have to say if I was using cam covers I wouldn't have known what it was and it could have been possibly worse. Just one instance where no covers helped avoid a bad deal.

Can you PM me some prices on getting those turbos fixed up for me? I want to sell them but I might have them fixed before I do. I have two sets that need work actually. The others are a set of old 3SX turbos. I might need to just give you a call.

Some of the latest

Well I busted my ass to get the car ready for Saturday and it looks like it paid off. It seems to be doing better than ever.

The repaired clutch looks great.

PST aluminum drive shaft, Like it, I haven't raised hell in the car yet but there is no drivetrain slop and it seems to be a bit quicker when you tromp on it.

I'm still adjusting the coilovers, drove it to work on hard and drove it back on soft. It seems more bouncy on hard and I've heard it was the other way around. I can definitely drive faster on the twisties but need more time to really give an opinion.

Sooooooo.... The balance tube was good to you huh? When mine comes apart in June I will have to invest in doing it. Have you enough time with it to be sure the surge is gone?

They will beat the shit out of you on a parking lot.

Pretty sure, Not 100% but it sure as hell made a big difference. Changing my BOV made a difference though and there are plenty on this board that believes that has nothing to do with it.

What did you go with on the bov? I had a HKS, swapped to a Greddy RS, no difference in surge. Though I prefer the Greddy.

I had a OA TIAL with a 10-11psi spring witch was too tight. I went to a recirculating TIAL with an 8psi spring and it helped a bunch.

Are you recirculating or open atmosphere? If your recirculating then loosen it, if OA then change it to recirculate, then loosen it. lol

If your running stock mass anyway
