My 92 3kgt sl has been making some noise lately. The motor gives off a ticking sound when accelerated. While in stand still I rev the motor to about 2.5k and it starts sort of ticking. But its a progressive tick. The ticking corresponds with the revving. It ticks while in cold start and when driving down the hihgway, but it doesnt make a noise standing still. I could really use some help from some of you more experienced with the platform. This is my first 3kgt. And I plan on keeping it for a long time. Any and all help is appreciated.

P.S. I recently fixed the motor because it had a spun rod bearing so I at least know its not that, again.

it's lifter tick. there's two ways to fix it.

the cheap way is to use heavier oil; not exactly the greatest for engine durability though.

the better way is to install 99 lifters. the increased bore allows for greater oil flow, reducing/eliminating lifter tick.

p.s.
keep in mind that many cars with 99 lifters get a significant reduction in noise, but it does not disappear altogether. cold starts are usually where most will hear it...and this is mainly due to the oil draining out of the assembly after it sits for some time.

Ok thanks, guess I'll have to buy some lifters. Do you know where I can get parts for this car. I live in Austell, close to Atlanta.

I'm not sure your problem is lifter tick. you say its quiet at idle when lifter tick is MOST apparent, and gets louder with RPM. Typically lifter tick noise gets easily covered up when the engine is off idle.

Work smart and check ALL possibilities for your ticking noise.

Ive been busy and really been ignoring my car lately. But I still not sure what the noise from my engine is. I have a video recording I took of it. Its pretty crappy but its all I have at the moment.
*EDIT* Video is not posting but you can see it on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdvwQunoRyo

That's not a lifter tick. Don't rule out bearings just because you just fixed it, many have tried to rebuild and failed the first time around.

That being said, sounds like the something rubbing, like a belt or pulley hitting something.
