Bought this from a pawn shop

I'm not too familiar with brand names but I like that it's a straight shaft and it was only $100 out the door. I've already used it and it works friggen great, good deal? It's an efco 35.4cc double ring.

They had a Stihl 30cc curved shaft there but I wanted a straight. My main concern is could I have gotten something better at that price?

Eh, I shopped around for yard tools last year. $100 isn't bad, but there are better deals to be had from craigslist on gas powered weed wackers. You can get brand new gas trimmers for under $100, up to about $200. Not sure about the Efco brand, never heard of it.

that's an echo knockoff. i sold echo's all the time at THD. straight shafts usually go for around $200 new. i have no idea how old yours is; being what (imho) is a knockoff. echo is a teriffic brand; i would recommend their string trimmers over any others. period. efco...no idea.

The only thing you can get for $100 or less is a neutered emission friendly POS. The only thing you can get for $200 is a neutered emission friendly POS. This new 4 stroke stuff is BS as well, IMO. Personally, I don't like straight shaft. Curved shaft is worlds easier to operate for me.

I just went through 3 new weedeaters only to be very let down buy all of them and end up fixing my old Ryobi 31.5cc, smoke belching, oil spewing beast. One of the new ones I bought, spun the wrong way. Was made by a left handed person apparently, haha. When you edged with it, it threw all the shit back at you, lol. I bought the top of the line Craftsman, with an electric starter no less....100% weak, junk. High end Husqvarna...garbage. They're all 28cc or less(and subject to the new 2009 emissions code), just not enough to get the job done, even at full tilt. Bought a $100 Weedeater brand one....it literally seized 3 minutes after being started.

I've never heard of the brand you bought, but the engine size is niiiiccceee and that's all I give a shit about. If they don't have enough balls to cut, it really doesn't matter what brand it is.

I have a Ryobi electric trimmer/edger. All of my yard tools are electric and use the same lithium battery. I knew going in that the trimmer wouldn't have the power of a gas equivalent, and it would take longer to cut through really heavy stuff, but it works surprisingly well for a trimmer. Using it as an edger is where it really falls short, it only has enough power when the string is at the maximum length (which doesn't last long) and the auto feeder doesn't feed it back out that far. That's ok though, the only part I have to edge is around the front sidewalk. The extra time it takes is worth it to me by not having to buy gas, and there's zero maintenance. Best part was that I got it in a bundle with other things I needed, a blower and hedge trimmer, all together for $100.

this. pawn shops work extensively with the police to track stolen goods. we recovered more than 1 stolen rental tool this way while i was working at home depot.

This is good to know, in Montreal they were not at this level! I had a triplex there sometime ago and one of the locator got stolen, he found his guitar in a pawn shop, neither the shop or the police helped him on this. They simply didn't care. Glad to hear it's different for you guys.

I can, but not larger than 28cc, which just isn't enough to get it done. I suspect the mufflers on them are really restrictive as well, because they are very weak in the power department. Perhpas a more specialized brand like Stihl I could, but out of the local big box store, no way. I just went through this and was very disappointed.

When did you buy that? The best Craftsman they had at my local Sears was a 29cc 4 stroke, and it was well over $200.
