View Full Version : Merging Non-Contiguous Partitions

I have a partition that I want to extend into some unallocated space on another drive but they aren't contiguous. Is there a way to do it without losing the data?

Here is what is looks like now.

In the image you can see my system partition on the top left. I did it this way as that is a slightly faster drive so I used my older drive for everything else but obviously I'm running out of space.

In WIndows 7 have you tried right clicking on the current partition and seeing if the resize option is available? Alternatively somehting like partition magic should do the trick.

Doesn't work in Windows because they are different physical drives.

Ah shit I miss read. I thought he was just trying to expand the system partition to the unused space on the same drive. So yeah can't help you with that. Not even sure if it's possible short of RAID.

I don't think you can "extend" a drives partition onto a different physical drive, without RAID as GTOJOE said. With all the extra space, why not just create a separate (temporary) storage partition?

Yeah, why not just extend the system partition to take up the whole HD, and use he second drive for storage?

The second drive is only 80Gb, while the unpartitioned space left in the first drive is over 600Gb, and I believe that was the drive he said was faster too. So really, best idea might be to partition the space as a secondary partition, move all storage data there and just remove the 80Gb. More space, faster operation, less heat and power consumption. That's what I'd do anyway.

I think that's what I'm going to do. I was just trying to avoid another drive letter but if I remove the 80gb there's no problems.

You could always partition it and rather than mounting it to a drive letter mount it to a folder on the other drive.
