View Full Version : 60k gone horribly wrong

So I had a friend ask me to look into doing his 60k. Said the motor got hot and died. So I pulled the covers and and found a melted belt, frozen water pump and melted timing belt idlers. Here is what I had when I got it pulled apart.

Down side is I can free wheel the crank.

So here is my question: can I swap '91 TT heads to a '93 non-TT?

I know the cam sensor is different and can it be changed? Are the head bolts reuseable? We have a second set of heads and want this to be done as inexpensively as possible.

Any help would be great. Thanks to all.

afaik, you can swap all heads back and forth; you just have to work around the CAS. i don't know the specifics of doing that however.

The best way out of this, is to buy a head gasket set with valve seals, and rob the needed valves out of the turbo heads. That way it's done cheap with parts you already have, without being a hack job...

Yes you can re-use the stock head bolts.

TUFFRT, at least your pulleys are still in one piece.

MR2, the water pump bearings froze and the belt melted itself to everything.

So it comes down to pulling heads this week and we'll go from there. I'll post some pics when I get the heads off and see what the damage looks like.

Your pistons will be smashed up as well. Covered in marks from the valves so I would just replace the whole motor not just the heads. Was it a genuine water pump?

More info .. I know you say 60k but what was the mileage/age on said parts

Marks from valves on pistons is no reason what so ever to to think the pistons are bad. That's just silly.

They will still be intact and work but the marks would create a hot spot. There was some discussion on this in another thread.

If the piston's just have the marks from bending valves, and this is going to be just a normal type of DD. Should be fine.
I must say though the title here is mega miss-leading. This is not the case of a 60K service going wrong.
Title - Should have been more like "Why should I do a 60K?", as Looks more like the work of a 60K never being done.
However. If this car is going to be beat upon when fininshed. More thought should be put into this repair and a full rebuild concidered.
How many miles on the car? How many months was the car being driven hot? What condition is the rest of the car. What the heck does the lower end look like.
You should always concider the application of the finished product, or the customers intended use of the car when finished. As that will dictate the course of action to be taken.
I am a real fan of fresh bores and new pistons. All depend on the customers love for the car, and the size of their wallet.
Good luck.

I knew nothing of this car when it ran. When I meet the guy he told me the car had sat for 6 months and when it went he said he was driving, it got hot and died. I'll get pictures of the water pump when I get back out to the car. What was supposeto take a day to change the pump and belt has turned into a pain in the neck to do. The car has almost 130k on it. It was just a DD

Heads and a full 60K and it should be fine for a DD. Done 4 like this. The issues you will have is not knowing if the motor had rod knock, spun bearing or other issues that the owner was un awhere of. You may end up doing all this work for not.
Just let the owner know that he is rolling the dice by not doing a full rebuild, so as to keep you neck off the chopping block. LOL.

Well I'll be popping the heads off in the next few days and see how bad it really is.

Not so bad, at least the bearings are mostly still in the pulleys unlike mine... lol

Only able to get the front head off but the intake valves on the rear look just as bad.

Damn that sucks man.

Nationalmilkman

So far the owner has put $325 of parts into this. I think we can get this all done less than $500

Maybe, dont forget you need new guides at this point.

Going with another set of heads.

Looks typical. Those pistons look fine. Although they took a hit. No big deal. But do tell the owner to stop using that Walmart gasoline. LOL.
Had he been running Shell, he would have been able to eat off the pistons.

Nationalmilkman

I doubt he was running 93 octane like the owners manual says as well.

The best thing about this thread is your choice of tools in the 1st pic
