I just bought a twin turbo engine that the PO said came out of a wrecked 95 VR4. It has the transmission attached. The engine has a crank sensor, so it is definitely a 93+ engine. The transmission, I can shift it using the shift arms into 7 different gates. I am guessing 1-6, and R. It has the AWD transfer case attached to it still.

The part number on the transmission is w5mg1-0-fnbr and under that is bca-0-0666 .

Since this engine is going into a mid-engine project, I will have not studied up on the transmissions... I am wanting to make sure and get as much info/clues about this transmission as I can in order to sell it. I am quite sure it is a six speed, it is the numbers that have me confused.

is this a 5 speed case with 6 speed guts? Could I be reading the P/N wrong? What other clues do I need to look for?

Post up a picture and we can instantly tell you. One dead giveaway - does it have 3 or 4 shift rails? Look at the endcase and see if there are 3 or 4 little plugs in a row. There should be 4 on a W6MG1.

w5mg1-0-fnbr is a 91 year model 5 speed.

w6mg1-0-fnbr is a 94-up US market 6 speed.

There are four distinct gates on one side, and 3 on the other when manually shifting with the pivot arms where the cables from the shifter go. Is this possible with the 5 speed?
The transmission is a couple miles away, I will look at all of the clues and suggestions tomorrow. :) (thank you, BTW, for the help)

okay, it's a 5 speed. PO lied to me. At least I knew what to look for on the engine to get the newer one. (the CPS wires on the front of it)

Where can I get parts (synchros, etc) to rebuild this? (I have retired Chrysler master auto tech that will rebuild it, I just need to get the parts)
