Waiting on The President to speak, watching the live stream on the website now:

President Obama Delivers a Statement | The White House (http://www.whitehouse.gov/live/president-obama-delivers-statement)

His escape in 2001 was a huge blow to the credibility of the United States in managing a manhunt, let alone a war. I'm just shocked. I agree, it is hard to believe - we'll have to wait to see what the circumstances were, I'm captivated.

About time. It only took 3510+ days (3519 days if we got him today). Feels wrong to celebrate the death of a human being... "yeah!!!" was my first thought though.

That's right, f-ck with the USA and you've got at most 10 years left... Gaddafi, must be terrified, he ain't going to see 2022!

I wonder what Al-Qaeda's response will be. :(

Not to politicize the thread, but I'd guess Obama is now unbeatable in 2012. Even if it was all coincidence on Obama's part, many will credit him with getting the job done just for approving the mission. The GOP didn't have any strong contenders to begin with, now that he can claim to be strong on national defense too, he'll be nearly impossible to stop next year.

They got Bin Laden, kicked his ass to the curb on his own territory, and everyone made it back fine. Good job US armed forces!

...and if the republicans or the democrats try to say it was all their party, well...

it's a huge accomplishment; and it will mean little until they take out zawahiri as well. imho, he's nearly as potent of a figure as bin laden, as they co-founded al qaeda. i think you'll see a tapering off of violence. there might be a short-term spike...but i highly doubt it will last. there's a lot of opportunistic terrorism/IED attacks which are perpetuated by mercenaries.

p.s.

you will NEVER hear who did it. you will never hear who took out zarquai either.

What was the rationale for burying Bin Laden at sea, by the way?

Mikes2nd

he was buried according to islamic law, which requires a speedy burial, thusly at sea.

I think its great he is finally done, but do we really need to party like its 1999 over another humans death? I think a quick hole in the sand would have been preferable to fucking up the water, y'know?

I do not advocate celebrating the death of anyone, but my belief is moderated by a compulsion similar to Corey's - Bin Laden, for me, personnified genuine evil in human form.

Over and over again, we decry the current and historical oversteps of religion - I wonder if this will be seen as oppression of Islam?

Seems to be the way things work, these days.

That's exactly my point though... if everyone THINKS he's dead... there will be no trial. And they can get the info they need out of him, like where Al-Zawahiri is hiding. Disposing of his body for a quick burial is one thing... if they actually buried him, obviously he could be dug up for proof. Dropped into the sea? No one will ever be able to prove it.

The Obama administration are political geniuses. The are purposely setting the stage for conspiracy theorists. In a month or so they will come forward with the indisputable evidence (As indisputable as you can have) and use it as a political weapon. Its very smart politics really. The Tea Party and general Obama haters are getting ready to run with this theory, and its going to come back and bite them. Im sure they took him back to the Navy ship to get pictures, dna, etc etc... But we will never see those pictures until 20 years later.

They they dumped him. We all know how the conspiracy theorists have made our govt paranoid so they have tons of proof im sure.

No reason to take the other bodies, it would just cause more issues...

Well, when you think about how the US went about the capture of Saddam, they posted pics of his capture, where he was hiding, and quickly put him on trial. I don't see too much difference here with how we could have dealt with Bin Laden. The world wanted proof that we had captured/killed Saddam, and we provided it. This time around... there's a lot of questions.

Small-M-secularist Muslim (Saddam) vs. Large-M Muslim (Osama) makes a big difference to the 'street'.

Saddam was never a candidate for martyrdom, I don't think.

I see a pretty big difference in how they would handle it. Saddam was being put on trial by his own people. We would be putting Laden on trial.

It would be a good way of dealing with him though. If people thought he was dead they could do whatever they wanted to him to get information. Wouldn’t have to worry about a circus trial and all the other BS. If it was ever found out though......

While I dont doubt we got the fucker I do have questions. He was shot in HIS house, a major compound built right near Paki military bases. He had 7-8' tall walls with barbed wire on top. i don't think it's celebrating over a humans death (not that i consider him human)
i could be wrong, but i think the celebrating is more over a major accomplishment, part of an attempt to make the world a better, safer place. the world is absolutely better off without him
no matter how he died or if he is still alive and even being tortured for years on end, i won't be losing any sleep over it

even if people are celebrating over the death of one "monster" is a lot different than celebrating over the death of thousands of innocent people (including women and children)

Actually, probably not.

He was especially at risk as the primary target (most wanted in all the world, right?) of American forces, and so was probably out-of-the-loop, operationally.

Not to say he was worthless, intelligence-wise, but probably not overly-valuable, either.

I'm saying the information could not be had. You can't torture it out of someone like bin Laden, he'll endure it until he dies...or kill himself while in captivity. So, the risk of detaining him for information gathering (which isn't going to happen IMO) is not even remotely worth the risk of his blind disciples attacking *whatever* in an attempt to get him back(if he were still alive, they still have hope). These idiots understand one thing, force/violence. We marched in, shot him in the head, and dumped his carcass in the sea...message received I would think.

I'm not sure why people are so surprised that Osama was shot dead and not captured. If you are firing a gun against the military and you keep firing, eventually you are going to get dead. I'm sure he knew what his fate was going to be if he just surrendered.

And it makes perfect sense why they only carried his body out. They wanted to get DNA and pictures to prove who they shot. I don't think the military normally drags dead terrorists back on a regular basis, but obviously they need to go the extra mile for all the conspiracy nut jobs out there.

i agree that he's better off dead. we don't need the hassle of having him alive. and as jeremy alluded to, this is a region of the world that only responds to aggressive force. killing him transmits that message very clearly.

Did anyone hear of this? Taliban offered us bin Laden in October of 2001 if we'd stop bombarding the hell out of them??? Bush turned them down!!! We could have saved ourselves that entire war.

Bush rejects Taliban offer to surrender bin Laden - Asia, World - The Independent (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/bush-rejects-taliban-offer-to-surrender-bin-laden-631436.html)

Absurd. Did you even read the article before you posted?

Haji Abdul Kabir, the Taliban's deputy prime minister, to surrender Mr bin Laden if America would halt its bombing and provide evidence against the Saudi-born dissident

Mr Kabir said: "If America were to step back from the current policy, then we could negotiate." Mr bin Laden could be handed over to a third country for trial, he said. "We could discuss which third country."

"When I said no negotiations I meant no negotiations," Mr Bush said. "We know he's guilty. Turn him over. There's no need to discuss innocence or guilt."

Hats off to the people who got the job done. Hats off to Obama for keeping the running orders, first given by Bush, going to get the job done once he got into power. Hats also off to the person who persuaded our idiot president to keep Gitmo open so that some of the intelligence we used to get us to this moment was actually collected. Hopefully we waterboarded that info out of the guy who helped us put 2 in Osama Bin Asshole.

My only complaint about this event is the dumping of Osama in the ocean to "respect" his faith. After that crap smear danced on the graves of our people, we did him an honor as our last act towards him. If I knew exactly where that guy was dumped, I'd take a boat there and crap overboard then toss a shoe.

That's another thing I find a bit suspicious... This operation was carried out at night/early morning. By the time a few hours had passed and we heard about it, his body was already transported to a carrier, DNA samples and photographs taken, washed and cleaned, then dumped overboard... When/who did they ask to see if they would take the body? At the least, I figured Saudi Arabia would say yes, as well as Pakistan, if they were asked. It's already been said that no one outside of our government knew about the operation, so I don't think there would have been much time at all to ask who would take his body.

KSA said no, that was the only nation I'd heard of being asked.

It would have turned into a shrine for Muslim extremism, not good. I think we went about it the right way. Dump in international waters, he's fish food now, game over.

Well done to the troops, the CIA, and Presidents 43 and 44. Regardless of who gets to claim the kill it's a great day for America.

Was I put off by Obama's use of "I" when so much of this was an American effort, not "his" effort? Sure. But whatever, if he needs a pat on the back to feel good, so be it, good job President Obama. There, I said it. Doesn't make me an Obama supporter, give credit where it's due and move on.

Yeah, I don't think they took the time to ask any countries that probably would have said yes. And I agree with you, I wouldn't have asked them either, because of the reason you mentioned. The "official" line though, makes it sound like no country in the world wanted his body, and I think that is false.

Keeping with Mulsim tradition the body has to be buried speedily(within 24 hours on average). This leaves no time to be playing phone tag around the world to see if anyone would accept his carcass. His home country (Saudi) was asked and they said no. I think that's more than enough. I think we all realize headlines tend to oversensationalize just a weeee bit.

this is really what it all boils down to. we have no hope of winning a battle of depravity with terrorists; so we must consistently take the moral high-road in order to maintain international support and sanction for our actions in combating it. i understand why it was done, and i agree with it being done; i would still have preferred other alternatives. however, it's not about me--or even the US body public. it really has to do with maintaining international favor towards our actions. future offensives against terror will be exponentially harder without that support. it's a bitter, necessary pill.

so yes, although my personal sadistic side would gleefully enjoy making a shrine for him & sniping people who come to pay homage...what was done was the correct course of action. and gtojoe, making said "shrine" would be no worse than the booby-trapping of our soldiers bodies with IED's--or strapping IED's to kids. yes, it's a deplorably insensitive idea. and so is putting osama's head on a pike; using his body to recreate the fallujah debacle, or creating a national "piss on osama's grave" day on the national mall. they're all bad ideas. still...it's cathartic to dream what we'd wish we could do to someone as inhuman as osama.

My thoughts exactly. I'm not arguing that how we disposed of him was wrong, Jeremy. It was the right thing to do. But I'm with Chris, I think that "being respectful" after we killed him isn't really going to matter too much to the people that we are trying to placate here.

HilbillyHomeboy

So, you think the way we handled the remains has nothing to do with the absolute lack of any appreciable negative sentiment? I've read one negative story so far; a Sunni educator said that burying at sea is a sin. Hell(pun), the guy didn't even seem mad, just pointing out that even when someone drowns that the body is to be searched for so they could be buried in the ground if possible. In turn, I've also read of specific treatment dealing with burying at sea for their religion. I am not well versed in their religion to say either way. All I know is we could have done much worse, or a lot less, depending on how you want to look at it, and that we definitely came out on top the way we handled the body.

There's absolutely no way you are going to convince me that the way we dealt with his body and the lack of backlash isn't related. Yes, we killed him. Afterward, we again reaffirmed our stance that this action was never religous discrimination by affording our worst enemy a proper burial according to his religious belief. What can the extremists of his religion say to this? What part of this can they use to bolster up new recruits? Right, pretty much nothing. I think the design, and ultimate intent, of our action(s) is very obvious.

It's not that I think the most extreme of the bunch said "oh well they did give him a nice burial, call off the jihad boys, for real we're all good, pip pip cheerio". I damn sure think it quelled what would have been holy hell had we done what a significant portion of the world anticipated we would have done. I guarantee there's a whole bunch of dolts out there scratching their heads..."but, but it's the Americans...wait...what...I don't even this".

So, you think the way we handled the remains has nothing to do with the absolute lack of any appreciable negative sentiment?
Jeremy

Hard to say. I would argue that the lack of negative sentiment primarily stems from Al-Qaida's suicide bombings over the past decade on fellow Muslims. In fact, there have been surveys done several times over the past few years regarding the perception the Muslim world has for the US and for Bin Laden. While the US has always scored fairly low with the populace over there, Bin Laden's numbers have been slipping since 2003, when AQ in Iraq claimed credit for a lot of mass killings.

In short, they were ok with Bin Laden and AQ when they were bombing us on our own soil. After they started blowing things up around the world (Iraq, Spain, etc...) and killing their own people, public sentiment among Muslims largely turned against OBL. Not to mention, what country is going to speak out against this? If they do, they will immediately be branded a country that is a terrorist sympathizer, and no country wants that label, regardless of whether they agree with the US being attacked or not.

Not to mention, in every single picture, video, and even the book written about him buy his family - he ALWAYS has his AK47 by his side. So the White House is telling me Osama has a seal team raid his house and he doesn't reach for his trusty AK? Bullshit.

After all the press conferences the last two days to divulge more "details" I'm now starting to get skeptical. We don't need to wax poetic about how things went down. Show a picture of his corpse, end of story. After all the media showing of Saddam and his sons, I'd think some proof is the least we can do. Not that it isn't disgusting in itself, but with all the details about a woman/wife, he was armed/unarmed, yada yada . . . just stop, post the proof, game over.

I don't doubt Bin Laden is dead, and the basic circumstances (as recounted) are reasonable.

Likewise, however, I have no doubt there is substantial 'management' of determinative information taking place, and for reasons apart from what 'Islam' thinks.

That's right it would be no worse. In fact it's the same thing and your OK with it??? That sort of thing is the reason we have been fighting Osama. To stop behaviour like that. I know your not being 100% serious but I still think we need to stop and think about things before we say them. We are talking about human life here afterall.

Anyway I for one won't believe anything till we have independant proof. I don't doubt he's dead. I personally think he was probably killed long ago [and kept it quite] and they have just been using it to stay in the middle east "looking for him".

i can assure you that we're not "staying in the middle east" because of personal interests. we're in the middle east until we can get afghanistan stabilized to the point at which we have a reasonable certainty that it won't immediately start harboring terrorist groups as it had in the 90's. there's a lot of naive misunderstanding which mistakenly perceives US actions in the current conflict as imperialistic and warmongering. this isn't surprising...given that you never hear the facts from the media. the truth is, a large percentage of the time our troops utilize is spent on rebuilding efforts. roads, schools, etc. of course, humanitarian efforts by our military isn't as sensational as us kicking in doors and shooting people in the head...so guess which one makes the news?

frankly, the current conflict is a quagmire of spending; yet if we are to have learned our lesson from 20 years ago...it's not enough to simply rid the country of undesirable elements--we need to stabilize it to prevent rogue juntas from seizing power at all. indirectly, our lack of efforts after the withdrawal of the soviets is what lead to 9-11.

p.s.

other than the catharsis derived from the desecration of osama's corpse; the other key factor is that the middle-east cultures understand very little as clearly as they do absolute violence and brutality. that means that our choice of actions has to weigh the impact of making a statement of deterrence against the pacification and appeasement of our current, potential, and future allies in the war on terror. i believe our choice was the correct one. it may not cause terrorists the world over to shit themselves overnight; but it will make it a LOT easier to start picking them off one by one. that will probably be exponentially more effective in the long run.

what i dont understand is this:

National security officials agreed "the best option is the one that gives proof," the official said.

hence they send in a SEAL team to take bin laden out.

but then they opt not to show proof? I admit I am torn with their decision. maybe the shot to his head pretty much blew a huge chunk of it off. well what did they expect? use a paintball gun to take him down instead?

I still think, despite what perceived negative effects may come out, that they should release a photo of bin laden. maybe even the one from the ship after his body was cleaned and before it was dumped in the sea.

this quote said it best:

Sen. Lindsey Graham, Republican member of the Armed Services Committee
“I respectfully disagree with President Obama’s decision not to release the photos. It’s a mistake. The whole purpose of sending our soldiers into the compound, rather than an aerial bombardment, was to obtain indisputable proof of Bin Laden’s death. I know Bin Laden is dead. But the best way to protect and defend our interests overseas is to prove that fact to the rest of the world. I’m afraid the decision made today by President Obama will unnecessarily prolong this debate.”

Graham is probably right. I think the photos will be released, just not right now. On its face, I would say that they are probably waiting to see what terrorist reprisals will follow OBL's death, before "rocking the boat" even further with photos of him dead.

Again though... I am not 100% sure he is dead. We definitely have him though, whether dead or alive, I don't know. Considering that Pakistan is now taking heat for harboring a terrorist all this time, there's no way the US would be faking the whole episode. We went in and got him, and Pakistan knows it's the truth. We may be faking his death, but I think it's obvious we got him during the raid, not at some previous date as some others have said.

My guess is that photos will be released around summer of next year... right before the election. Mark this post and come back to it next summer when the photos are released.

We always say Pics or it didn't happen, so I'm sticking with that when talking about Osama being killed.

Secretly I believe it. I also believe this is the next thing Obama is going to try to hold onto as long as he can. First he wouldn't release his birth certificate till now. Next will be this photograph. He will release it via a "leak" when somewhere next year he is needing a boost in the polls so he can get reelected.

+1 on leak

The only conspiracy theory I’m buying into is that he is still alive and in our custody. I don’t really think so though.

Unless you are over there and in some position of power then you can assure nothing. The ppl on the ground only know what they have been told. And yes the area does need to be stablised and there is much work to be done. I have not implied that there is not or that the work that is being done is not justified. I'm just saying that the government does not tell everyone everything and for all we know that could be the fact. There are many Australian [and other nations] troops still there. All of them doing good work. But that's not the point.... The point is how much do you trust your government?

Are you implying that the lack of US troops some how allowed the terrorist groups to form? Do you really think that having thousands of US troops in the country would somehow stop terrorist groups from targeting the USA? I think this would have made it worse.

Unless you are of middle eastern descent then you can not possible know how they think!! I believe action needed to be taken against these groups and I believe the forces that are still there are taking orders they believe to be correct.... but that does not mean that what they have recieved is the truth. No-one knows what the government is telling them is correct.

I don't trust my government and you should not trust yours. The ppl on the ground are only doing what they think is right. There is nothing wrong with that. So don't get defensive over this.

Anyway i hope all that makes sense. I'm severly lacking sleep [4 hours in the last 24hrs] and have had a few glasses of wine.

A photo would add some closure to the ordeal, however, I don't think it would quell any conspiracy theories. Photos are so easily altered nowadays that they have lost their credibility for "proof".

no, the government doesn't tell us everything. however, all you need is a cursory look at history to understand why we have to "finish" the job. it sucks, i agree. it still sucks less than what happens in 10-20 years if we prematurely ejaculate.

Are you implying that the lack of US troops some how allowed the terrorist groups to form? Do you really think that having thousands of US troops in the country would somehow stop terrorist groups from targeting the USA? I think this would have made it worse.

not a lack of US troops; a lack of proper closure to previous conflicts. germany after WWI. afghanistan after soviets pulled out. history is RIFE with examples of what happens when you don't finish the job correctly. troops aren't needed--ONCE THE JOB IS COMPLETE. i don't think we need an enduring presence...and i'm certain that i never insinuated that.

Anyway i hope all that makes sense. I'm severly lacking sleep [4 hours in the last 24hrs] and have had a few glasses of wine.

it has nothing to do with being defensive. there's a glut of misinformation out there, and a lot of it is perpetrated by the cursory service the media gives to it. the same media which calls a honda civic with a CAI & an SAFC a "high-performance lethal street-racing machine" (i'm serious, it was a bit done in california where they also crushed a civic hatchback) is the same media which is telling you that the US is nothing but warmongering. to everyone but those "in the know" the media reports seem legit. all i'm saying is that if you don't have perspective on the issue--what you hear pumped out by news-anchors will seem like the word of god. take a step back and do some research on your own. you'll quickly realize why we're over there till the work is done.

p.s.

no, i'm not middle-eastern. still, i've been exposed enough to cultural studies to understand many of the nuances of the region. shows of force and power are still seen as legitimate means to rule. perhaps in the western world these shows are seen as barbaric, brutal, and inhumane. to many in the middle-east, this is the way of life. the "alpha-dog" mentality is still alive and well. i believe that if a theocratic caliphate ever does reassemble itself on the earth; the leader will be the one with the most blood on his hands.
