this is for a local guy, not for me, although i'd like to know for myself also

he has 94 dohc with what sounds like rod knock
what's the best route for him to take?
i have an extra engine with about 130k on it
i dont mind helping with that, but i think it'd be dumb not to go ahead and do a 120k job on it along with a new clutch kit
120k is a good $300 in parts and clutch kit is a good $200
even doing this cheaper than i'm willing to, it'd be well over $1k
which leads me to look for other options as he doesn't have too much to spend
looking for parts needed, tips, prices, feasibility and any upgrades that can be done while doing just a bottom end rebuild

thanks

Rebuilds aren't cheap.
If you're gonna rebuild anything with bearing damage it's going to be over $1000 bottom line, otherwise you're not doing it the correct way and will end up doing it again.
You have to get everypart cleaned that has had oil flow through it at a machine shop. You have to get your rods, crank and block inspected at a machine shop. And then hope and pray nothing is out of tolerance or you are gonna pay out of your ass.
Best bet is to do 120k service on your engine you have sitting around. Do the oil pump as well. But first I'd make sure its rod knock.
