Who do you rate as the best in the NBA?

I rate Jordan as the greatest simply because he took a flailing Chicago all the way to the championship title. He didn't need to be supported by other superstars. He made a hell of alot of clutch shots. He could and did everything.

Wilt Chamberlain was the only player I've ever seen who was 'unstoppable'.

Absolutely. I love the fact that he had Pippen, Grant, Paxton, BJ, Cartwright - and then later Kukoc, Longley, Fisher and Rodman to name most. I loved Horace Grant. That man was as hard a worker as anyone on the court.

Probably one of the greatest pure athletes ever - Jim Brown was another.

"Greatest player" (I think) is best considered in the 'team' context, and then you have to include players like Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, as well.

All around, I think I'd have to go with Johnson.

Maybe for a basketball player. If you're talking about sports in general though (which it appears so since you are talking about "pure" athletes), Bo Jackson would like to have a word with you. :p

Jordan was the best, but Wilt would be a very close second IMO. I do think it's a little disengenuous to say Jordan did it all by himself though. Pipen, Kerr, and Rodman were all great players in their own right.

Yeah, was thinking why I didn't include Magic and Bird this morning. Can I just clarify, I never said Jordan did it himself. What I was trying to say was he went to Chicago, worked hard and they as a team won 6 championships. LeBron wont ever be able to say he did that.

That's the trouble when trying to formulate a proper "who's best" question; too many conditions, circumstances and scenarios to account for everyone who arguably belongs in the conversation.

jordan, chamberlain and jabbar were all great. it's nearly impossible to put anyone at the absolute top of the NBA list though.

i would also consider mentioning:

pete maravich
larry bird
robert parish
john stockton
patrick ewing
magic johnson
isaiah thomas
karl malone


maravich is, imho, still one of the greatest to ever grace the sport--even if his professional career was unduly short.

I dont include Stockton or Malone (even tho they were one of the best ever one-two partnerships of all time) as they couldn't win a championship. (did Malone win one with the Lakers??)

Ewing was a monster of a man but wasn't a game winner.
