So far I haven't gotten any word of the impending doom from leaders. So what happens to us? The only thing one of my friends found from calling finance, is they are to issue a one week, paper, check. And NO PAY till this is over. And then its optional to pay us back.

Anyone know any more, REAL FACTS?

Uh... Because of the funding issues, we the soldiers can possibly not get paid, but one week, on a check that resembles one from your check book. All this until they figure the new funding bills.........My pay has been about the same through out the years, and now this? Why is this so hard to just keep us paid as is, and then adjust it when the bills are passed?

Military still gets paid from what I understand. It's all the other government jobs out there that will stop reporting to work.

I just read on military.com that if the previous bill expires on the 8th, we will get a pay check for the first week of April and no more till this bill gets passed. And it is not mandatory we get paid back.

Obama: Government Shutdown Will Delay Pay To Troops (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/06/obama-government-shutdown_1_n_845726.html?icid=maing-grid7|main5|dl1|sec1_lnk2|54649)

According to this you'll get one week paid, and your pay will continue to accrue, but you won't receive a check until Congress passes a new budget.

My suggestion, call your representative, if they're democrat tell them to pull their head out of their ass and try to save more money, if they're republican tell them its dirty to jerk off to a photo of Reagan in their office, and do something productive for once, because if history repeats itself they'll end up being the idiots who made the deficit worse.

Welcome to voluntary servitude. This probably explains why my command has been working me 70+ hours per week.

I am a DoD employee for the US Navy,I wont be getting paid, but will still report to work to DO MY JOB and fix submarines and send them to sea so they can DO THEIR JOB. The rumor is we will get our retroactive pay.

I just want to know, next friday (what would normally be my payday) if I am going to get paid for the full two weeks I had worked? or one weeks pay. No one has been able to answer this for me.

And eljefefx, our sailors have been leaving at like 11am every day for weeks :/

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't the 13th amendment state that you can only work for free as a punishment? I have done nothing wrong. And my contract did not state "will work for free.".

If you read the fine print, you'll notice that you forfeit some of your rights to join the service, and you serve at the behest/pleasure/whim of the government, your commanding officer, commander in chief, and anyone else that gives you a lawful order to continue working.

You're not working for free either, you still get a roof over your head, food, medical care, and other essential items, and you most likely will be getting paid retroactively anyway.

If anything, even if you don't get paid, it will be more like an pay cut to your annual salary rather than straight working for free.

Did I hear right that Obama has declared all military personnel re-designated as "non-essential for the time being"?

i'll still show up for work. i'll still work there for the immediate future. when i hit the point where i start having problems paying for my bills, i'll go out and get another job; and then the government can try and take it up with me when i don't show up for work because i'm out trying to actually earn a paycheck.

p.s.

i keep tabs. i never forget who i owe and who owes me. this won't be something that "quietly goes away" if someone tries to shortchange me. compensation was a key impetus behind my agreeing to swear an oath. as much as i dearly love my own personal freedoms--denying me my just compensation a breech of contract.

Exempt employees cannot have their salary reduced for absences occasioned by the
employer or by the operating requirements of the business. In general, if the employee is ready, willing,
and able to work, no deduction may be made from the predetermined salary when work is not available.

Info above is from the Federal Labor Standords Act

If you are a exempt salary employee, they have to pay you while you are out of work, or fire you then rehire you.

My company is considering the second option :(

I heard that - the state of Michigan still owes me about 3K in travel expenses from my tenure back in the '90s.

They also owe me a pension, so I'll broach the subject when I start drawing.

i'm of the mindset that the first people NOT to get paid should be the legislators that got us into this mess.

A lot of people down here in Huntsville will be receiving stop work orders at 12:00 AM Saturday morning. Fortunately my program is funded for the next 6 months so I am presently in the clear.

Unlike soldiers, programs that continue work during this time might not get compensated for their time. There is a big gray area in the defense contracts right now over what to do when one program might deem a work continuation totally necessary, and yet they know they run the risk of losing a ton of money if the government comes back and refuses to compensate them for their work during the work stoppage.

I feel bad for those affected by this. My company provides furlough benefits to those with 2+ years with the company, but the compensation plan is one year with the company = one week's worth of pay to a minimum of four weeks. After that benefit ends, it appears they are treating those affected as taking a leave of absence and will be draining their vacation time accordingly. Really crappy situation.

This is the exact reason I cant put up with the army any more. This is also the reason no one votes. Because even those who did, and voted for the people who lost, aids in making you feel less valued as a citizen. I am just tired of 8 years with having someone else have a say about my life. Yes I gave it up to do something. But now after how I have seen the light, I demand my pay to continue. And now this. Awesome.

It's only gonna be like a week... no one has a weeks pay saved? Thats not the govt's fault. This happened in the 90's, it happened in the 80's its always going to happen, us govt employees have it good, but its not a 100% sure thing.

3700 people from PSNS got a letter today, I didnt, I feel lucky, I'm going to work next week, going to get paid next friday for the last 2 weeks I have worked (full paycheck) and after that I may recieve a partial check, and then a bigger check a month from now. I have been deemed essential, will show up to work, pay will accrue but I wont get it. Others get an entire week off, unpaid, and then they will come back and get retroactive pay....

Navy Federal Credit Union is forwarding all active duty sailors the 7 days pay the govt isnt giving them this check. Their pay will be retroactive, every single active duty sailor (i cannot speak for the other branches) will have pretty much zero negative consequences from this event.

I'm gonna look on Craigslist tonight and see what kind of deals I can find :) Someones gotta be sellin a TV cheap! rofl.

Your right navy fed is advancing us pay, but what if they bicker about this again for another 2 weeks and the 1st rolls around? There is no guarentee that this will only last a week...

That is what we are worried about.. or have you ever had your pay messed up? I have... and they like to wait MONTHS to fix it.. but will take in DAYS.

This can royaly fuck people.. as yea I have savings.. but when I have $2000 a month in living expenses(rent, food, power, water)

Savings goes away really fast.

There really is no future for any federal employee as long as we have this deficiet hanging over our heads. And that will be like 30 years or so. So if you do not like your pay and benefits being challenged every year by the entire American public that pay you then get out of public service. In the end we all have the power to choose and vote.
You vote in some of these matters simply with your feet by not playing their game. Get out. If you stay on it validates the position they are putting you in.
What do I mean by that? Simple the contention is that federal pay and benefits exceed what you can get in the private sector. If you stay in public service even under the duress of the current system then you validate that statement. If the majority begin to leave well then it implies that statement is not true or not true enough to retain public workers under the stresses of the current system. Either the stress has to be addressed or the pay and benefits improved to the retention level when viewed from the employer aspect.

I understand the troubles of having pay disrupted. It is no different for any federal employee. This is not just a military problem. The system (government) can change and will change when it needs to not when we want it to. So again if you stay on in federal service and politics being what they are and the debit being what it is and as long as taxes remain low the government will never have enough cash on hand to operate in the black. And this kind of treatment will become common place throughout your career.
