I was watching NHRA and I told Hubby it was my destiny to be a pit crew member working on a high performance race car.
I can't explain how I feel when the vibration from a high hp engine pulses thru my body.
He said those guys had been doing it all their lives and good luck.
I was talking about what should have happened but didn't.
When I was 13 I asked my Dad to let me take shop which at that time covered engines.
He said "No" because it wasn't lady like and sent me to home something other instead.
No matter how stupid it may be..let your children be who they are.

Would you say the same for boys who want to participate in feminine activities?

To a point Granny. As long as it's in the realm of reason and doesn't provoke danger.
My son's best friend paints his fingernails black and blue and wears the craziest outfits to school. It was a little strange to me at first but that's just hime and he's a great kid! I won't necessarily force my son, Roman, into anything. He may get a stiff nudge towards sports or some sort of social activity though.

Prov. 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. The way he should go in the Hebrew has to do with the way he naturally bends. My son's first words were shelby cobra. But, he just didn't naturally bend towards working on cars. He likes them but doesn't have that bend to work on them. I'll have to agree with you Granny. Funny how what were good at we enjoy doing and vice versa.

I have always wanted to be a tech for Lamborghini, but my parents think it's a stupid thing to pursue as a career. They always push me into the industrial field of work, having nothing good to say about me wanting to go back to school... Who knows though, perhaps one day we can in some ways fulfill our dreams and do the things we want. It may take some effort and a few thrown elbows, but I believe regardless of gender, parents, or any form of negativity we can be able to do what we want. :)

Are you saying you wanted to be able to get your hands on a "wrench" when you reached the age of majority?
Did getting married help at all?
Actually, I used to work with a youngster who pined to be a NASCAR mechanic, and grew up to be Joe Nemechek's crew chief.
He got tagged for cheating a while back, so I have no idea what he's doing now right now.

I'm not saying kids don't need guidence.
A few classes exploring something they may really enjoy probably isn't going to change the big picture but just like me they will never forget the lost opportunity.

How did you find out I got married at 13? :suspect:
You know as stupid as it sounds that probably would have been acceptable.
Go figure...

 i never wanted to be a cop, but my dad made sure i knew being a cop when i grew up was NOT an option.
I did really want to be a stunt man though and was told never to pursue it because there was no money in it. I was told the same thing about being a mechanic and doing FMX. In all honesty though I think I could have done pretty well at fmx.

To be honest my dad and uncles (hell my whole family) are simply redneck ol’ timers. So every time the family got together lots of stories about encounters with the police would come up in conversation along with a lot of hate. It was pretty obvious even from a young age that people hated cops and you were not to become a cop. period. Not one person in my family has anything to do with law enforcement. Considering my dad has 9 siblings and my mom has 11, plus most married and had 2-4 kids, I’ve got a huge family and not one of my cuz's or uncles is a cop.

Letting your children "be who they are" isn't always an option. Case in point, a guy I was friends with as a child is definitely not the type of person you can just let go off to find what they like on their own. As a kid, he played video games constantly. Stayed up real late playing them, then he was always tired and falling asleep in school. His mother eventually resorted to giving him drugs to "calm him down"... This was before the days of ADHD had entered the world and which I think is a bunch of crap. He grew up and went to college, didn't change much, except now instead of Nintendo it was Playstation. His parents paid his way through school, but he never did any work... his mother would actually come down to Austin for a weekend and type up papers for him, do his homework, etc. She basically earned his degree for him. Fast forward another 15 years, he was living at home, his parents kicked him out because they couldn't stand his behavior, so now he lives downtown in an apartment that they pay for, doesn't have a job, and he continues to play video games all night and sleep all day. He's definitely a case where some strong guidance was needed, and if that didn't work, force him to do something with his life, because he never made that decision on his own.

You have no idea. Although its amazing how fast there opinions of imports change when you give them a 'driveway pull'. The look on someone’s face/there reactions when you do 0-47ish-0 in your driveway and they see the garage door coming up is always pure fear. I love it.

Same thing you were denied of, just the opposite sex wanting to do "girly" activities like play with dolls or play kitchen or whatever kids are doing these days.

This is just letting your children run the household.
Big difference in helping them find and pursue their interest.

Just as long as we are not talking about cross dressing. :lol7:
The guys I grew up with liked playing house but I dare say they didn't tell their friends at school either.
They all grew up to be loving productive adults.
I ran into one a few months back and he still feels like family after all these years.
Let's be honest..most men are not going to encourage their sons to do "girly" activities but hanging out with the girls will probably teach them how to communicate better with women.
