View Full Version : **MHI Turbo Pricing Increase**

I just got off the phone with two of our turbo suppliers, and to my delight, we were informed that they received a letter last Thursday, noting a pricing increase of roughly $800 or so on MHI 13G's and I believe two of the Evo turbos (??). I kind of zoned out after he said 13G's.
So, expect to see pricing on a lot of td04 turbos rise across the board. We will be changing the pricing on out td04 turbos according on our parts site. Home (http://www.3swarehouse.com)
They are not sure if it is a permanent pricing increase, or just temporarily. Hopefully it is just temporary.
Just thought you guys may want to know :(

This seems to be consistent across -most- industries. Manufacturers froze or even dropped prices during the "depression" and are finally getting to the point where they can't survive much longer at those low margins.
I work at a HVAC distributor. 90% of our manufacturers raised prices 5-8% January 1st and the rest did it March 1st.
The depression isn't over. I'm very curious to see what price increases will do to the economy.
13Ts are probably the only td04 upgrade that I will ever have. td05/6 should be next. :)

I figured it would have something to do with the Japan situation, where those turbos come from.

According to our supplier, it's nearly doubled their cost. It's a bit different than a 5-8% increase :p

I don't know if the 16g's will be seeing the pricing increase or not. I really stopped listening after he mentioned the 13g's. but something about the evo 9 and some other evo turbo. I dunno, I'm really pissed. We've taken down the pricing and purchasing option on all of our td04 turbos until further notice. :(

Was gunna mention the horrible spelling...... beat me to it :p
Whoa. Not good. I REALLY hope that it's a temporary due to the Japan situation. $2000 for a set of 13Gs? At that price, EVERYONE will be running DR650-DR750 billets ... which, hmm, might not be a bad thing....

The problem is those DR turbos are made from mhi 13g turbos, so the cost for them to make those presumably will go up.

Exactly. Expect all upgraded turbos to go up in price if they are built from new 13g's. All of ours are built that way.
chinabay 16g's are looking MIGHTY GOOD right about now....
if only we could get billet wheels for them, and not just the mhi ones.

This is correct, All my Billet TD04 turbos are built off the MHI 13G cores so this is going to effect them also. I have I think 6 sets of MHI 13G bought at the old price that are not already spoken for that I can bild into billet 650's, 700's After those are gone the price is going to go up. so if you want a set you better order them now.
the 750's aren't built on 13g's?
damn, if the 700's go up in price, they'll run right into the 750's current price.

Yep, gonna write them to let them know that this $800 price increase (hopefully temporary) will just urge more people to choose non-mhi chinese made turbochargers. The cost for MHI to make these may have gone up, but not that much.

agreed. i'm hoping someone starts looking into billet turbine solutions for non-mhi turbos. $4200+ for a set of dr750's is....insane.

I agree, nobody is more pissed at this then I am.
We are looking into having our own housings made here in the usa, but thats going to take a wile.

natural evolution at it's finest. when a problem presents itself, there is always a fix :bigthumb: I hope you can make something of this
honestly, USA cores would be better anyway :p
wraith
04-08-2011, 12:21 AM
wow! USA made would be great and you could probably have alot of new tech right into them from the getgo. In fact, you could even make the housings a little more efficient for those wheels and still a bolt on. We could have a whole new level of bolt on performance. Imagine larger DR750 style wheels in a slightly larger A/R housing---might even be cheaper since you could design the additional machining needed on a 13g into the casting from the getgo---your own billet wastegate
billet housings. mmmmmmm.....
p.s.
i'm guessing this will probably effect the td04 side more than the td05 side (if it does effect td05's significantly). there's so many dsm owners with td05 housings/cores running around that it just doesn't seem like it would be a huge problem....for the moment.

Sent them an inquiry about the $800 price increase and this was their response:
Thank you for your comments.
We are not sure about pricing issue what you mentioned.
Because we cannot control the pricing.
Our distributers determines the prices.
Thank you.

What's the big deal? Just buy a Hyundai TD-04 turbo or a Volvo TD-04... LOL, They sell 19T TD-04's at the dealership for like $1100ea. Twin scroll TD-04 19T option is $1500ea.
My ex girlfriends Elantra had a Mitsu stamp on the firewall as did my dads old Isuzu Rodeo. :suspect: So why are the prices going up again? Doesn't volvo make like every option of TD-4 on the planet?
Series 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 19, in some form of B,C, T, and G? All with L or HL options? I'm 100% sure they do.
What's the difference between the Volvo and MHI cartridges?
Hans@GZP
04-09-2011, 09:15 AM
Volvo uses mhi turbos. They don't make their own.
Hans@GZP
04-09-2011, 09:16 AM
And you can buy center cartridges cheap on eBay with 19t wheels in them. But, it's from eBay lol
that means that volvo hasn't hit an increase yet because they've got enough reserves.

Just wanted to quick update here, the TD05 MHI 16G's increased in price $150/turbo. The td04 MHI 13G's increased $400/turbo. There is no indication of the pricing coming back down ANYTIME in the forseeable future.
how about if you purchase through Subaru? or to Skubi just grab them from MHI? guess it's time to dig up more 9b cores...they are a dime a dozen
Emilie@GZP
04-28-2011, 08:08 PM
if they are MHI turbos, the pricing went up. It doesn't matter where you buy them from... they all come from the same place.
If anyone wants 9b cores... I got dozens.... and dozens... lol
well, start fixing them cores :) why waste good bits? clean them up + new bearings and your good to go...no-one wants them...can make 19T's out of them and you can still buy new covers so nothing to loose really.
what's the diff on 9b cores vs 13G cores?
GTOJOE

Core is the same IIRC only the compressor housing and wheel is different.
so wtf is everyone so worked up about...refurb the old...swap the wheels..the wheels can't be worth $400 anyway :p
GTOJOE

13G compressor housing is larger so it is the one used for upgrading to 19T/DR7XX etc. The main centre core is the same though. Maybe the compress housing can be bought on it's own from Mitsubishi??
