What: New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge 2010
When: Saturday, October 16th through Sunday, October 17th
Starting Point: Airport Plaza
1390 Highway 36
Hazlet, NJ 07730
Time: 9:00 AM

The NJ Lighthouse Challenge is a two day event where the 11 land based lighthouses of NJ are opened to the public for visitation and climbing. In addition to the 11 lighthouses there are two museums, one life saving station (newly added this year) and a bonus location are a part of this event. A tri-fold souvenir pamphlet will be available for purchase for $1.00. As you visit each lighthouse your souvenir will be stamped as proof of each visit. This will be your souvenir to commemorate your participation in the event. This year marks the 11th Anniversary that the NJ Lighthouse Challenge has been held since its inception.

For more information about this event, please visit the NJ Lighthouse Society’s challenge website, New Jersey Lighthouse Society - Other Lighthouse Events (http://www.njlhs.org/other/otherevents.html#Light) or http://www.lighthousechallengenj.org/ .

The point of this event for 3SNJ is a reason for a nice long cruise where we can visit and learn about location of this state that we are not aware of or never thought about visiting, until now. Lighthouses are also great back drops for pictures of our cars. :) Did I also mention that this is a relatively long cruise, about 390 miles, along most of New Jersey’s southern shoreline. This is a great opportunity for us to do what we love doing, driving and showing off our cars. This is a rain or shine event so there is no excuse to drop out because of the weather. :p This is basically a free event, except for fuel, food and lodging, the souvenir pamphlet is optional.

We completed the challenge last year and we will do it again this year.

Now the bad news

Ludlam Beach lighthouse has been demolished :(

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local-beat/Historic-Lighthouse-Demolished--103436419.html

We still haven't decided if we will be making the trek over there to pay tribute to its history.
What does everyone think? Go or not go? This will have an effect on the route we take.

I will post up the route info by early next week.

Hmmm, this sounds like fun. Is it a highway cruise for most of it? or is more side street type roads?

Maybe, this sounds like it would be worth it, i drove the stealth to Jersey 2 times last year, as well as ohio twice. I havent gotten to take a trip in it yet this year, so this might be worth doing.

How are the roads in the area, good for lowered cars, or should i raise it up a little?

91STT
09-25-2010, 01:34 AM
How low are we talking about?
I don't think a lowered car would be a problem.
There is really only 1 lighthouse that is a little out of the way, East Point.
There aren't any roads that are not paved.

I just meant pothole and bumps, there's. A few dips in the city here that I have scraped my front tow hooks on if I'm running the street tires. The slicks pick it up about a half in, and I haven't hit anything since, as long as there isn't anything to bad along the way I should be fine.

91STT
09-25-2010, 01:47 AM
I don't remember if we encountered any serious potholes but they do exist here. Some places are worst than others. Not sure if I would suggest you driving on slicks since there is the possibility of rain.

idk idk New Jersey has been pretty bad lately with the roads... I wouldnt risk anything if I were you.

Here are the route details.
They zip file contain the route details in Excel format.
I have included street addresses whenever possible.
Latitude and longitude coordinates have also been included for those that prefer them.

The plan is to leave Airport Plaza in Hazlet by 10:00 AM and head to Sandy Hook Lighthouse.
We will try to keep to the planned scheduled and make up delays by shortening subsequent layovers. Lunch has not been accounted for in the schedule but it will most likely be after Barnegat Lighthouse. Since Barnegat was climbed last year; the plan this year is to climb Cape May Lighthouse, if time permits.

We will meet at the former future Ludlam Beach location at 10:00 AM on day #2.
If we get a consensus on that day, we can swing by the demo site to check out what's left.

I've never seen one... How do you identify one?

According to this there is only one, right in the middle of the state, out of your way... :(

91STT
09-30-2010, 04:27 PM
I have not seen any and the searches I have made show only 2 stations in the entire state that offers it.
Both are somewhat out of the way.
The one in the south is not too bad but you would have to risk travelling a long distance without coming across it.

Do they sell an e85 concentrate in a jerry can like they do other race fuels? Just curious...

Austin@STM

I can make most of the trip on one tank, and bring 2 gas cans with me, i just need to be able to refill down there somewhere.

These are the only two stations that I was able to find on the net:

Power Gas
205 Sanford Street
East Orange, NJ 07018
973-678-2002

Mighty Joe's Gas Grill & Deli
1231 Route 206
Shamong, NJ 08088
609-268-0303

I have not verified that they do have offer E85, though.

On your way down it would not be too out of the way to make a stop in East Orange before heading to Hazlet.
On your way back to Rochester, it is going to be 50-60 miles out of the way to stop at either.

Well im only able to make it about 250-300 miles on average, with a bit of stop and go on a full tank, which makes it difficult to do a trip thats gonna be about 1100 miles round trip ( if i figured it right). I'll have to figure it out, have a lot of driving this weekend, so i will see how this goes first.

As an option to those that are coming from the south, if you guys would like, you can go straight to Sandy Hook Lighthouse. We can meet you there. All those going straight to Sandy Hook should be there at around 10:30. The plan is to leave there at 11:00. Attendees from the north should meet at Airport Plaza and then we will caravan to Sandy Hook.

Who plans on going directly to Sandy Hook?
