you all think your being hard done by with the slight rise in fuel prices?and your paying what $3.00 per gallon ish?
converted and put into a perspective for you guys...its not actually a bad price, in fact every single Brit would love those prices. we buy it by the litre not the gallon and its now at $2.15 per Litre. multiply that by 4.5 to get a gallon and we pay $9.67 Per Gallon. and you guys are moaning?

Doesn't cost me a cent. I have a contract with a certain fuel provider, and part of the deal is I don't pay for gas.

$1.20/litre in Ontario, Canada... other places are more. That is just for Premium gas (89 octane).. Its a LOT more expensive for 91 and 93 octane.

As much as I hate how expensive gas is becoming here in the US (compared to the 'good ol days'), I'm glad I'm not paying what you guys are paying there in the UK.
From what I understand, it's all about the taxes though. You guys are paying a lot more tax for your gas than we are, and that makes up for a significant amount of the price difference.
Also, on a consumption level, the US consumes about 3x the amount of oil that you guys do. Whether this allows us to buy in larger bulk or whatever to keep the prices down might factor in a bit, but probably not as much as the tax situation.

Yeah, I was gonna say his math is off. A liter is slightly more than a quart, and a quart is well 1/4 gallon.

US government source, to put it in perspective:
EIA - Short-Term Energy Outlook - Real Energy Prices (http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/steo/realprices/index.cfm)
Adjusted for inflation, gas is pretty high historically...

I spoke to a photographer from the UK last summer and he put things into perspective for me as to how much you guys pay. I tip my hat to you folks...that is madness. Lowest around here is 4.09 for 91 and I'm ready to ride my bike everywhere locally and am already carpooling distant drives.

It will be $5 soon I have no doubt. Our current administration has no interest in haveing low fuel cost as it only adds to "greenhouse gas" that will cause "global warming" and kill us all. When GWB was pres everyone looked to him as a oil man that is looking to profit either himself or his friends, this in turn kept the media after him. The current pres however doesnt seem to take any heat for the significant rise in cost. Sorry to get political but you cant really deny its true.

I hate to break it to you but you can't just blame the current administration. If you look at the link I posted previously, had the trend in Bush's day continued (I'd say the economic downturn put an end to that), gas would be much higher. As well, in terms of its proven reserves the US is already overproducing compared to other nations, and seeing as the price of oil is determined by world, rather than US supply, it would be foolish to try to pin this on Obama and Co.

The shit you use every day is the same thing you so boldly take to your computer to "enlighten" us about. It's people like you that make the difference. Ya know, the ones that play the role of do as I say, not as I do. Tough shit, you're part of it. Keep us posted on your new insights. :lmao:

1 gallon = 4.55 litres 8 pints to a gallon unless the US gallon is lower volume than the imperial gallon?

ahh there are indeed different gallons.....just like dozens, the british wine gallon the american colonials took with them as mearusrment is lower volum to the gallon we are used to,
the american gallon is indeed 3.7 litres, but our old gallon is 4.55 litres.
so you actually get short changed by 1.** litres
there are 40 fluid ounces in the British quart but only 32 fluid ounces in the US quart.

AO you just proved my point my friend. You are suggesting that Bush had a hand in rising oil prices but when it rises under Obama its some how ridiculous to think the president has any control over oil prices. I actually agree with your later statement, the president has little to do with oil prices. Somehow though people want to believe that Bush did. Just saying the media tied Bush directly to rising oil prices, Obama on the other hand seems to be free of this criticism.

Uhm no,
Your point was that the media scrutiny on Bush kept oil prices in check.
His point was that gas was trending high under W and aside from a momentary drop due to the financial crisis, it has continued on its trend. And even going beyond that his statement that the world controls the price would indicate neither Obama or Bush can be blamed for the prices.

What? You must have read a different post. Media scrutiny did NOT keep prices in check. I remember paying over $4 a gallon when Bush was in the White House.
The media scrutinized because "It was all Bush's fault, he controlled gas prices", and now under Obama, "The president has no control over gas prices"

And unless I'm reading it incorrectly, Corey is advocating that Bush's ties to oil kept a media watch on him and that kept prices in check. He couldn't make the prices skyrocket since it would just be a blatant misuse of his authority to benefit himself and his friends.
Then I'm pointing out that given this statement and then AO's post about oil prices merely being a continuance of the recent price trend and that the world influences the price instead of the president; that Corey's statement that AO was affirming his point was wrong.
I was stating the two ideas don't support each other.

Read that statement.
Read the rest. The media wanted to blame Bush because "He controls oil", but the current rise in prices has no media outcry to the president.

To clarify my posts. I stated the media was always after Bush when gas prices went up. But with Obama there is nothing in the media pointing to him as he himself having any control. Whether Bush was able to inflate prices and the reel them back in I have no idea but the media seemed to think he was behind the rising costs. Now that Obama is in office and prices are sky rocketing, not a word.
You see the way I view it is if Bush had a vested increase in prices to get his friends rich how does Obama not have a interest to appease his enviromental buddies. If we had a fair media wouldnt the each be viewed as equally having a interest in higher prices? Apparently not.

Well I can't dissagree that Bush took more heat over oil prices than Obama has or is.
As for equal media coverage though we aren't exactly talking apples to apples either. The premise Bush got beat up over was quite linear where as you don't have the same type of blantant financial motivation for Obama to do the same thing. Not to mention that since Obama is in office under an economic nightmare time, doing something to the disparagement of the nation for the furtherment of a group's ecological ideals seems a bit presumptuous in comparison.
I'm not saying he shouldn't be criticized, I'm just saying you need more substance in his case since the motive isn't as obvious.

First off there are a lot better things Obama could do if he wanted to go all hippie with his envirobuddies, and if I was to point any fingers at Bush it would be that he had a vested interest in allowing american companies to increase their production and do more exploration, which wouldn't jack the prices. I think you can't really say its Obama or Bush because there's a trend there that covers both of them, and aside from the big drop brought on by the recession and subsequent drop in momentary drop in demand, gas is right where it should be based on the prior trend. As much as its an easy scapegoat to point fingers at the POTUS, or the previous POTUS, then come up with a motive after, I don't think this can be tied to any single government, or even OPEC, let alone the government of a country that could easily outproduce its proven reserves at current production rates, if it can't find enough new reserves.
