What's with all the PG-13 movies nowadays? Where are all the good, old-fashioned R-rated movies with the violence, obscene language and nudity??? I know films are trying to draw more money, but still...........Are we all doomed to 'Twilight' wannabes???? UUGGHHHHHH
And I'm not gonna get started on the 3D crap, either.

Much larger market for a PG-13 movie than an R movie. Same reason there are just about 0 M movies in comparison to R.

I liked 3D in Tron, but I've never seen a 3D movie before that... It's a gimmick really. Once the action started, it wasn't that noticeable, really.

3D is horrible, I hate wearing glasses. And whnever they get uncomfortable I can't take them off and watch the movie.

this. omg yes, this. i tried to tell everyone after it first came out, and no one believed me.
i've seen two movies in the past couple of years that were 3d. avatar & tron: legacy. imho, no others were worth seeing in 3d (let alone seeing period). if you went to see saw or jackass 3d--i seriously pity you.
how these two movies differ:
tron used 3d as a background effect. very subtle overall. what it did do was to help add a bit of depth to each frame, by placing the characters cleanly in front of the background. it was a fantastic movie in imax 3d, and the overall 3d effect was subtle enough that even non-3d-fans could probably enjoy it.
avatar 3d is on a totally different level. cameron designed a new freaking camera just to be able to utilize the 3d like he envisioned it. the result is spectacular. you are literally immersed in the movie. in any given frame, there are probably at least 4 different "depths" being shown (vs. ~2 for tron). although i was not able to watch it in imax 3d, i can only imagine how much more mesmerizing the experience would have been if i'd been able to see it there, instead of regular 3d. avatar is proof positive of what 3d can be in the hands of a master craftsman. it in itself is justification for 3d. period.
p.s.
i complain about the same pg-13 crap when it comes to video games. definitely not enough nudity in FPS's. imho, movies would be a lot better of they used a 50/50 blend of porno/regular. maybe only devote 1/4 to sex scenes. throw in a lot of swearing. add a lot of random nudity (ala spartacus: blood and sand). oh, and i wanna see penetration. none of this "fuzzed out", "fade to black", "pan over to focus on the wall", or any other shit. no closeups; just good ole' fuckin.

The 3D in Tron sucked... Personally I love going to see 3D movies because they are fun to watch. Despicable Me probably had the best 3D i've seen... And yes, I have gone and seen many of the kid movies. Avatar was good, and was the first one I saw in 3D.

3D movies are getting better. At first it was completely a gimmick, until Cameron actually utilized it like it should be. Half of what made Avatar as good as it was is the great 3D effect. I didn't like Tron's 3D as much because it seemed like half the movie was shot regular. I also just went to see Drive Angry, which I thought utilized 3D quite well. Really though, 3D originally was just a way for the movie theater to justify charging you an extra 20 to 40 percent to see the movie.

i agree with this assessment. part of the reason 3d gets a bad rap is because of the shovelware movies that use it. (pretty much like how the wii gets a bad rap). i thought tron was a pretty good movie overall; but you're right, the 3d wasn't utilized as much as it could or probably should have been. there was more 3d effects in captain EO than in tron 3d. :(

it doesn't matter if you thought the storyline was garbage. i thought it was crap too. the depth of the visuals still blew me away. gimmicky 3D movies give it a bad rap, the best part about avatar was how subtle it was. Nothing ever jumped out at you, but you could feel the depth of how far away things were.
to be fair though; even if you thought avatar's storyline was hogwash--how is that any worse than any of the re-recycled garbage that hollywood has been spewing out for the past several years (if not longer).

Yeah, I didn't like that I paid extra to see a 3D movie that I couldn't even tell utilized the technology. Many times during the movie I took off the glasses, and I could still watch the movie because there was no 3D. A movie like Tron should have, and could have been much more exciting in 3D.

I own a 3d tv and love it. I agree its you dont want to watch 3d all the time, I probably use 3d a 10th of the time but its mind blowing when you do. Black ops in 3d is rediculously good.

Avatar is the only movie I have ever watched in 3D and I was not overly impressed, not by the visuals nor the storyline. I do remember when 3D was a huge thing back in the 70's and then it died out. I am hoping for a similar death to re-occur.
And, IMHO, a horror or suspense flick just ISN'T the same without the cussing and boob shots. But, hey, what do I know.............
I'm just sick of the teenybopper-ghey-ass flicks that we are being fed these days. :(

My system uses the battery powered active shutter glasses. Way different than old school stuff. Best part is I use it when I want and dont when I dont.

I never think about what rating a movie has anymore.
I watched The Blind Side a few nights ago...PG13.
I really enjoyed it.
Most of the time I would rather watch a kids feel good movie over nudity and a few choice words....but that's just me. :peelout:

Watch spartacus season 1 and 2 just wrapped up last Friday.
Watch them, all the ultra violence and nudity you're looking for, along with a great story line.
3D is not going away. Theaters need whatever excuse they can to charge you more to watch a movie. It will be the same when home 3D gets really big. It will cost quite a bit more than your other options but people will buy it because it's "cool".

if you're looking for "rated R" content, you should check out the original series that are on/coming out on HBO/starz/cinemax, etc. true blood, spartacus, boardwalk empire, etc. are all awesome shows with minimum halfway decent story lines and (if you care about it) are actually putting out good nude scenes, too.
you're getting less rated R and more PG-13 movies because hollywood execs want more money. but still, look at movies like the hangover, highest grossing R-rated comedy of all time.
and to you avatar peoples - was it an entertaining movie? yes. was it a good movie? not particularly. it was just space Pocahontas with 10 foot blue aliens.

watched "Hall Pass" last night, the scenes were few, but if definitely warranted it's "R" rating.

we agree that most of what hollywood had been putting out over the past decade has been shit, (remakes (some have proved to be good, wholesome mindless entertainment IMO), recycled storylines, etc.), but that's always true. but if you're going to list movies that avatar is better than, please don't list movies that are just horrible.
films like inception, TDK, the hurt locker, Up, black swan, district 9, no country for old men, departed, gangs of new york, LOTR, a beautiful mind, gladiator, the hangover, the green mile should also be listed, they were all phenomenal movies in their own way.
avatar did fucking look awesome, however. there's no denying that the technology that went into that was totally worth it. it was definitely an experience that needed to be done in the movie theater, but it is not a movie that i will be watching again for many, years.
