View Full Version : Spyder Hydraulic Hose HELP!!! Same one keeps busting.

My car is at the shop being repainted in some areas. I stopped by today to be
informed that there was a hydraulic leak somewhere. By the amount of hydraulic
fluid he described, I believe one of the hoses has busted again.
We have replaced the same hose at least 4 times now. Two were craptastic ones
to just get us by. But the last two were OEM. Is there something I am missing
to be busting the same line? It is the pink hydraulic line going to the RH
tonneau cylinder. We bled the system each time we replaced any hoses and
refilled with aeroshell. I only seem to be having problems with the passenger
side hoses for the right side of the tonneau cover.
Thanks for any help,
April

have you auto configured the system after you replaced the hose ?

Need to get Marc over on these boards. He answered this question on 3000Spyders

No, because I just got the cable the other day. Am I supposed to auto configure after replacing just the hoses?

I posted the question on the Spyder group also. I don't think it is from anykind of rubbing because of the location on the bust. It looks like a hose blow-out, there is no rub marks on the hose.

I don't think auto configuration has anything to do with hoses. It just adjusts the limits for moving the top / tonneau after mechanical changes are made.

Thanks Jim for the cable also... do you want the other one back?
Could there be something wrong with the cylinder which would cause back pressure or something? When I bleed the system everything seems to go through o.k. We have probably raised the tonneau cover at least 20 times since replacing the hose in question.

I don't need the cable back. I really don't have any suggestions on the hose problem, seems like abrasion would be more likely than high pressure rupture.

Auto configuration will control how far the mechanics and cylinders move. Maybe you had a leak only at one of the extremes and after recalibration the system doesn't go that far

Well I am waiting for a call back from the body shop to see if I can go down there to pinpoint the problem. They had the interior plastic wrapped, so I was unable to get into the trunk. I'm *almost* positive it is the same hose. I am going to try what Mark suggested with a protective sleeve and an auto config to see if that will help.

Alright found the problem... the hydraulic fluid is coming out of the top of the tonneau cylinder on the right side.

I sprung a leak in mine once because the cover was poorly adjusted and it put stress on the hydraulic system.

Is that cylinder repairable, can you replace seals?
Where was the blow out on the hoses?

I "ass"umed it was a blow/busted hose. But the hydraulic fluid is coming out of the top of the cylinder. I think it is repairable, but I am going to call CherryHill in the morning and see if they can track me down a new cylinder. In the meantime, I am going to pull the cylinder out and take it to a repair shop Matt recommended in town.

Next trick is to figure out what caused the stress to blow out the seal.
Alignement issues?

I have a few assumption, but no evidence to back it up. Didn't have an alignment issue before bringing it there... but maybe it is just me being untrustworthy. The thing that really pissed me off is they didn't call when the problem occurred, we wouldn't have even know if I didn't stop by today. And the damn hard copy of the Spyder Supplement Repair manual was IN the back seat of the car (which they knew about).
But the paint looked good.
