long and short:

i contacted gixxerdrew personally about replicating his DSM hood for a 2g 3/s. sample pic:

http://www.dsmtuners.com/gallery/files/8/4/6/1/3/vp3_7338.jpg

this design is specific to him. it not only features increased ventilation over some "similar" styles, it also improves downforce over the front wheels. this design has evolved over several seasons of racing to the point where it is currently. it bears only mild cosmetic similarity to other offerings; and is VASTLY superior to any of these "knockoffs".

i can probably get him to "slightly" modify the design in some ways; but the overall vent shape will remain close to the same. it would also feature an extra inch or so of room over the intake plenum, so that 6g74 owners can hopefully use this as well. I also plan to get eyelids built into this hood.

projected cost is ~$600 per hood. i will need approximately 15 buyers. this is NOT a knockoff. there will be a lead time of between several weeks to a few months. this will be a limited-production run, and it will not be extended--as this particular gentleman is not interested sales. (this was identical to how his group-buy was run for his $4,000 DSM widebody kit.)

although i suspect the amount of interest will probably be minimal, i offer this here as an opportunity to obtain a very well-built, race-tested design which will only be made in limited quantities; NOT mass-produced. quality will be superb. you may check on gixxerdrew's reputation yourself (especially regarding his widebody kit), if you doubt me.

thank you in advance for your interest, and please keep negative comments out of this thread.

p.s.

if sufficient interest is generated to initiate this purchase, i will cover the group-buy fee myself.

I'm somewhat interested in this. I'm inclined to think that there would actually be a lot of interest in this, seems to me that a lot of us have been waiting to see a hood option with proven functionality. There was a ton of interest when Cianci was looking at a similar design, but...yeah. Where is gixxerdrew located? The option for me to pick the hood up rather than have it shipped has the potential to sway my decision. Basically if it's anywhere on the east coast I may be able to have it picked up; my sister goes to school in GA and drives home for breaks.

More info on evileye and fitment, as well.

Andrew (gixxerdrew) used a stock DSM as a "dummy" for fitment purposes; as his own car has been modified and re-modified so much that he did not trust that it would provide an accurate fit. Out of everyone who purchased his kit (from the limited production run it had) 100% were completely satisfied with fitment. I would venture to say that is not surprising, as whatever molds are used will not "wear down" much with such limited numbers. Although his widebody kit was designed to be used as a unit, there was one member who test-fitted his hood on an otherwise "stock" car when he received it--and noted that it fit perfectly. I expect that Andrew will find a stock 2g 3/s as a testbed, and use a similar level of detail in perfecting this hood.

Here's a link to his thread on the widebody thread:

P.S.

In order to keep things simple, I will request a "garden variety" eyelid (straight-line) for this hood. From his profile, I'm lead to believe that Andrew lives in Japan, although I will be certain to ask when I contact him.

Here's a post of Andrew's from that thread:

I will let you guys know if anything changes.

ez@2gnt; there is a huge huge list of differences between this hood and the scoote 2 hood they are not even close to be honest. Its a totally different hood even if it looks similar in photos. The only thing about it thats similar is the general shape of the ducts when looking at them only from the top side in a photo. that shape is fairly standard for SuperGT stuff.

All the ducting is different in depth, angle and structure, every dimension is different significantly. Fitment, materials, construction, reinforcements, shape of the hood top surfaces around the duct exits, the shapes around the headlights, it just looks kind of similar in a photo. You could not modify another hood to be like this... you would have to make your own molds like we did.

and here's his build thread:

So he is taking this mold and redesigning it for the 3s? I'm a little concerned about louver depth and the plenum.

I didn't get all the way through that link, but will the underside allow for drip rail alteration for weather. (Not that I wish to drive in bad weather), but shit happens daily where I am...

as I alluded to, i intend to see if he can increase the clearance between the vents and the plenum (increase deck clearance).

i'm sure you'll be able to modify this for drip-rails however you'd like; although i doubt any accommodations will be made for it, as that would likely reduce the efficiency of the vents to a degree. it's never really been a problem for most owners who run vented hoods; 3/s or otherwise. i keep a cover over my battery, and my car gets driven daily (when i'm home). i park it in a garage at night though.

cool, mine is garaged and driven once or twice a month. Should not be a problem then...

I'm going to have to spend some serious time looking over his construction and data before putting my hand up...

we have the issue of the rear turbo cooling which I am most interested in maintaining.

This cannot be viewed by most of us...can you repost it or something (convert to PDF or JPG and repost?) so we don't have to get a DSM account?

plain and simple guys, i posted this thread in FEBRUARY when i had time to work a deal out. i'm moving overseas and i don't have time now. the community dropped the ball on this (3si banned me, 3sgto couldn't generate enough interest). if someone else wants to contact andrew and continue to work out a deal, great. hell, i'll even be down for buying a hood; but the long and short of it is, i can't carry the ball on this one.

and now i expect that nothing good will ever come of anything, and the community will be forced to continue suffering through available products rather than be blessed with new and better ones.

it's cool, eventually if there are enough interested people we'll get there :) for me I would not be able to liberate funds till the end of next year, quite cool seeing what's possible though! especially seeing what he's done to the rest of his car on the build thread :D

interested

i'm headed overseas. why not ask jeff/brandon to set up a deal with andrew? IPS can certainly handle the funds to get this project off the ground, and i'm sure the entire run can be sold easily once a handful are sold and installed.

MR2

yeah, hit up IPS...and get them to start a discussion on it...if we can get X number of people interested...

I know I'd take one assuming all is done properly.

i'd take at least 1...possibly 2. and i'm fairly certain that i can get at least 2 more sold locally (sheri and milt would probably both run one).
