Changing valve stems..

So, once i get the valve covers off, what exactly do I do to get to and change the valve stems? (i have a kid due in 2 weeks and i have to do this myself)

If you are changing valve stem seals I think you need to pull the whole head as the valves need to be removed.

I've heard of pressurizing the head with a compressor somehow to keep the valves lifted when you compress the springs to get the retainers out. Get yourself a valve spring compressor tool and it shouldn't be too horrible. No need to completely remove the head from what I understand. Set the motor to TDC and the valves will mostly stay in place even without springs. A quick and dirty trick to getting TDC is take out a spark plug and put a long socket extension or something in there and rotate the crank pulley with a 22mm socket till you see the extension rise and right when it stops and starts to go down back up a hair and you should be at TDC or close enough to get the job done. It really makes the engine a lot easier to turn over if you remove all the spark plugs thus releiving compression pressure fighting you. Once you get that far remove the cams and make sure to keep the cam caps in order that they came off. Label them somehow or line them up out of the way. With a valve spring compressor tool take out the retainers with a magnet and slowly let the spring back up. The VSS should then be able to be pried up and over the valve itself with a pair of needlenose pliers. Use the front head for your practice, as the rear head will test your contortionist abilities :thumbup: good luck! I've done a few DSM motors, but haven't had the pleasure of doing any 3s VSS yet
