View Full Version : Running a staggered setup on a VR4

Hello - Any running a staggered set of rims? I'm looking at putting 5Zigen FN01RC -HV 18x8.5 front / 18x9.5 rear? A number of people have commented that it will wreck my differential. I was planning on using Bridgestone Potenza RE760 245/40/18 front and 275/35/18 rear. The diameters are 25.7" / 25.6" and revs per mile 811 / 814 respectively. Am I stupid for doing this? Should I sell one of the sets and match them up all the way around? Thoughts?
Thanks

My personal opinion is to match the sets. The car is AWD, not RWD.

That little difference in circumference is negligible. The differentials/VCU should handle a 1-2% difference in circumference without trouble.

this.^
while not preferable, you can do it, as the revs are close enough. my personal choice was for all four to match; both because it keeps the diameters closer, but also because it allows for easier tire rotations.
Not to mention that a staggered width setup defeats the purpose of the torque split in the centre diff.
Keep them all the same size. Wider tires in the rear are for RWD cars.

Agreed. Being able to do it, and it being a good idea, are sometimes worlds apart.

Hm.. I just got a set of used tires, 2 245/45/17 and 2 245/40/17. How much damage will this cause? I needed to replace my tires, but couldn't afford a brand new set at the time.

If its a VR4 it will destroy your VCU. 245/45/17 is 25.7" 245/40/17 is only 24.7"

this. i would have posted it, but stealthee got there first. :)

Damn.. I guess I need new tires. The used tire place said it shouldn't affect anything. I didn't realize at the time it would have ill effects.
How much damage would 30 miles have caused on my VCU?

Keep two. Buy 2 matching tires. Sell the 2 non-matched tires to recover most of the money. Heck, try to sell them to the used tire place for some cash + free mount/balance for the tires or something.

Negligible hopefully, but I wouldn't keep pressing my luck.

Use this site to compare the 2 sizes and get the closest possible match. I think what you are thinking is prob the closest anyway. The difference between 245/40/18 and 275/35/18 is 1.1cm which is nothing. So I serioulys doubt you would have VCU issues with this combination. However I think it's a little pointless. I would stick to same size all round.

The used tire place is obviously too stupid to know how to figure tire sizes. They are too stupid to know that AWD needs the same size tires on all 4 corners. They should now be too stupid to get your business ever again.
Keep the 245/45's they are stock size. The 245/40's are more like for a DSM or something.

Okay, I guess I will just take the wheels off the car and take it to them to fix. I don't want to risk breaking the VR4 at all. Damn car is so delicate, you can look at them wrong and things will fall apart.
negative, ghostrider. years of being owned by incompetant people, or being serviced by incompetant people FOR clueless people--THAT'S what makes them unreliable.
people in the US think of AWD as though it's witchcraft, so it's no wonder why things like this happen.
p.s.
285/35r18 will also work. both 285 & 275 are ~1.1cm in circumference difference--one slightly larger, one slightly smaller.

I love AWD, I just can't seem to stop breaking my VR4. I honestly don't even drive it, and things start breaking :(.
