So what happened to the theory of stars exploding and becoming black holes when they die? That article says our sun will become one after it burns out. Damn all these "facts" I learned in science class.

Depends on the strength of the sun really. If it burns out quickly it dwindles to a white dwarf and burns out into a compact mass, if it burns slowly it has alot of mass still which collapses into a black hole. Ours burns slowly.
Or something along those lines. But in regards to the diamond, it would cause massive inflation in the diamond market and would lose a ton of value, haha.

Sounds like you need a good dose of cosmos. Got Netflix? Carl explains this better than I can.
Long story short. They take the light that we see from it, split it into a spectrum. There are certain colors or shades that are not seen and they leave a black line in the spectrum. Every element has its own unique light ID. Therefore, we are able to determine the elemental makeup. We see a lot of carbon, and its a fully collapsed white dwarf, it is inevitable that it is a diamond.
You can actually do this light test at home if you have a way to put a prism in the focal point just in front of the eye piece.

I hooked a tractor beam to it and tried to pull it to earth, but I miscalculated the trajectory and it got stuck in Uranus. :-D
